Slammin Sammy?

he can mentor just about everyone on the team.

:lol ! He is the one guy I wouldn't want to have on a team full of young players.

I can see it now, all these young kids suddenly showing up with little entourages and boom boxes sprinting out to the field with their "Flinstone Vitamins" in their hands looking towards the cameras doing that kissy-heart-lips thing.

WOW! People talkin crap about Sosa are morons. I really hate when you guys play off each other and try to act like you know what the f*ck you are talking about.

He was a great player, and he's in his twilight now. Jesus christ, do not disregard this man's history.

Just....WOW

I did not even mention mentoring in the form of attitude and behavior. This man's accolades are enough to make the young players respect him.

I'm not saying he wasn't a great ballplayer, or that I don't want him here, but the fact of the matter is, he left the last game of the 2004 season after 20 minutes when he found out he wasn't playing. He wore out his welcome, and he annoyed his teammates with his loud music coming from his stereo during the pregame.

His team-mates hated him so much in 2004 that once he left, they took bats to his stereo and gladly told the media about it.

He's a fine, cheap, option for a team going nowhere like us, but he isn't a leader, or a mentorship option.

Sign him, let him try to win a job and hope he puts some fans in the seats because we'll need all that we can get at this point, but please, don't let him go near Cabrera...the man's already a basket case, Sosa may put him over the edge.

Please tell me you're joking. Nobody is disregarding his stats or what he's done. It's about his attitude and how he could poison a lockerroom of young guys.. all while probably putting up bad numbers, not that it even matters.

It's well known he is about the biggest primadona in the game. This is the guy that refused to take a limo to the balitmore facilities his first day because he demanded a helicopter. His teammates in Chicago absolutely hated him and he openly complains when asked to move down in the order.

The guy is a cancer and I want him no where near our young guys.

He was good, and I dont think anyone is trying to discredit what he has done for Major League Baseball. However, you said it yourself...he is in the twilight of his career and realistically has nothing to offer a team in our situation.

He's Spanish, and he can mentor just about everyone on the team. How many other players do you know that had 3 straight 60 HR seasons, regardless of steroids?

We have a ton of young hispanic players that he could be a positive influence on:

HanRam, Cabs, our Double A pitching staff.

He's not from Spain.

Declining production + Horrible clubhouse presence + High salary = Really, really, really stupid

More stupid than a firesale?

More stupid than a firesale. Sammy has nothing left but a bad attitude that we dont need to rub off on our now very young team.

His position is taken. That's why he's not coming.

The rest doesn't matter.

Let's see...he couldn't homer out of Camden Yards last season and we want to put him in the Pro for 81 games? Bad idea at any cost.

Hey, obviously you're a Sammy fan and that's fine. He was a great player at one time, his history has been tainted and he has, unfortunately, become a bad caricature of his old self -- but that's just my opinion. Your opinion is obviously different and that's OK. You like the guy and I respect that. At times I laugh at my own favorite players and, hell, I laugh at myself too. If you found my comments offensive, I'm sorry because that was not my intent.

Why not? Especially if Conine doesn't want to come back...

IF? You're constant questioning of this issue makes it seem as if it's a certainty that not only Conine is unhappy and will not come back. He's stated he wants playing time. Who else would give him a starting job if it meant offering him a larger contract than he'd make through arbitration, which will likely be offered, and giving up draft picks? His home is here. His business is here. He already has two rings. Would he rather be well paid to be the starting leftfielder on a veteran World Championship caliber team? Probably, but that opportunity is not out there. His best opportunity to play significant time is here.
