If anyone has a Scout.com membership, there's an interview with Uggla here...

Megrew could be a decent selection. Big soft-tossing lefty, maybe in the Mark Redman mold. Still only 20 years old too.

Here's some analysis by a lady from Baseball Weekly who was on mlb radio:

- Surprised that Kevin Howard didn't get selected.

- When asked about impact players & if anyone stood out,

She was very intrigued by the Dan Uggla selection by the Marlins.

Says that several scouts mentioned him as a sleeper. Thinks he could get significant playing time with the Marlins, & could even conceivably get a chance to start.

He tops out at 92-93 so isn't really that soft of a tosser. His best pitch is a chang-up though.

so best case he is a junk ball pitcher like arroyo?

Don't forget that neither Vargas or Olsen pitch above 93, it doesn't mean you are a junkballer. Also Olsen has only 2 pitches, as his change-up has never been seen at the ML level.

Uggla looks good, looks like he's got some speed and pop and I like his OBP at Tenn. last year.

Good AFL numbers too.

I'm excited to see all these prospects play. All of us talk about scouting reports and statistics...but that don't mean a damn thing until we watch them on the field.

Olsen tops out much higher than 93.

Does he, I never saw a pitch above 92 when he played this year. Was he playing within himself then?

Olsen pitches at 94, tops out at about 96...I think you're thinking of Willis and Vargas...Olsen is definitely the left-handed AJ Burnett...straight gas.

As for Uggla -v- Howard...I guess there are serious concerns about Howard's ability to make the jump, but it's odd considering Howard has better AFL stats while Uggla trumps him with AAA numbers. I wonder what's wrong with Uggla because it's odd to see a second baseman with a 20 homerun season and 20 steal potential left unprotected.

I like the numbers. Should be interesting to watch in the spring...

Here's all I can find on Uggla from B.A.:

Bill Mitchell Fan from Plant City, FL asks:

How about Dan Uggla? He looked pretty good in Arizona, and it's fun to say his name.

Kevin Goldstein:...Uggla has definitely turned himself into a prospect. He's a gritty guy with some pop who could be a real nice bench player.

I think someone mentioned it looked like he had some injury issues in A ball?

Maybe the Fish think Perry Hill can fix what ails Uggla defensively, who led his team with 25 eras last season.

A couple of positives. He played almost every inning of every game last season, 135, and another 29 games in the AFL, so he played the equivalent of a major leagure season. Considering how well he played in the fall league, at least offensively (he did commit a team high seven errors for Peoria), clearly the guy had something left after a full season at Tennessee.

He does seem to have quite a bat. He led both his AA team and his AFL team in hits, HRs and doubles (tied for 1st on AFL team) last season.

A couple of things I found:

?At Memphis I played second base, that?s really where I?ve always played. When I got drafted, I played my first year at second base only, last year I played second and third mostly, but yeah, I played first, I played short. I?m in the minors, I?ll play where ever they ask me to if it help me move up.? You hear that all the time in the minors. ?I?ll play anywhere.? Less often does someone actually do it, and Dan Uggla has done it. ?This Spring I?ve been playing mostly at second and short.?

Sounds like Easley's potential replacement to me. He is 26, has been with a couple of organizations, and maybe he could turn out to be another Joe Dillon, but heck for $50,000, he's certainly worth a looksee.

I'm certainly happy with his selection. If he doesn't start for us, he could be a cheap backup for whoever starts up the middle (and even Miggy).

Rotoworld's take on him:

Infielder Dan Uggla was selected by the Marlins from the Diamondbacks in the Rule 5 draft.

Interesting that Kevin Howard stays and Uggla goes. Uggla, 25, helped himself by hitting .304/.390/.538 in the AFL after finishing at .297/.378/.502 for Double-A Tennessee. Even though we suspect he'd not good enough defensively to be a regular and his power probably won't translate well to Dolphins Stadium, the Marlins might make him their second baseman. Did anyone else laugh at the matter-of-factness of that last sentence?

Michael Megrew - S - Marlins

Marlins selected LHP Mike Megrew from the Dodgers in the second round of the Rule 5 draft.

The Marlins were the only team to pick two players. Megrew was the last player picked, but he's also the best prospect to go in the draft. The problem is that he's just coming back from Tommy John surgery. The Marlins could try to stash him away on the 60-day disabled list at the start of the year.

I agree with them 100%

well atleast we took a 2b.... I think Uggla needs a nickname, asap

He'll just be the new Ugie.

I like the stats from ugga uggla .....I think he will be starting 2b for '06 season.

He has some pop
