August 30, 200322 yr Batting lead-off for the 'Topes yesterday. Gerald Williams went 3 for 4. After a dismal Spring with us, he has done very well and still has the tools in addition to experience. (I cited his good stats a few days ago.) I'm anxious to see him up here not just as a Pinch Hitter/Runner but fourth outfielder capable of all three positions. I'm pleased McKeon has played/started Mordecai and Fox. They didn't do much but they are, as a result, better prepared for their next sub assignments. This playoff-stretch is going to be demanding on our starters, physically and mentally. Call-ups will not be here for a cup of coffee or personal/future experience value. I think McKeon will only use those he believes will actually contribute. McKeon wants to win THIS YEAR. This is going to be exciting!

Marlin's management certainly have more knowledge of caliber of play exhibited by 'Topes players than we do and they chose to bring in Lenny Harris over Gerald Williams. Now perhaps Harris is a better "off the bench" pinchhitter than Williams or maybe, just maybe they've determined Williams can no longer effectively play above AAA ball, but for whatever reason, they don't seem particularly interested in your guy. All that said, I give GW credit for not hanging up his spikes when he was demoted and has certainly been productive in Albuquerque. He's had a great year there, but I'm not sure where he fits in to the Marlins plans, this year or next.

Harris is a pinch-hitter and potential (last resort) back-up infielder. Williams is an outfield ball-snagger and potential base-stealer. You're comparing apples and oranges.

Fox base stealing, check their career records including this year! Regrading ball-chasing, I suggested him as a fourth outfielder, maybe taking Banks place or splitting with him (we have no other). All within the expanded roster. If you're going for a triple-dip please say something substantial without your cocky critical attitude so often expresed to me and others.

He's had a nice year at AAA. He showed great professionalism when he was here and did a nice job when he was demoted, where a lot of guys would've sulked. But you keep quoting his AAA stats. Have you seen his major league stats for the last 3 years? Don't you think his major league stats should count as least as much as what he did against AAA pitching in a hitter's park in a hitter's league? I liked him when he was here. He played hard. He did his job in the field. But he just didn't hit at all and he hasn't hit in the last 3 years. I just don't see where Gerald Williams is going to make any difference to this team one way or another. Actually, he could - if he ended up playing a lot down the stretch our season is probably over; he can't replace any of our starting OFs on a regular basis.

We have only Banks, who is also our first-base back-up. I get questions like "Who would he replace?" HE WOULD REPLACE NO ONE with the roster expansion.

I'm with you 100% - bring him up Monday. He deserves that, even if just as a reward for being a pro and doing his job for the organization in the minors. But you've been wanting to bring him up for weeks now, and to do that we would've had to replace somebody. And, you didn't answer the question I asked - why the fascination with him? With the way McKeon plays the starters, do you think it really matters? And why do you keep harping on his minor league stats? What are your feelings on his major league stats? His major league batting average this millennium is .102.

Gerald Williams hasnt had double digits in steals in 2 years.... no GW as a 4th OF?.... id rather have Brian Banks who has been 'hitting' these pitchers all year.... i realize Gerald would come up and no one would go down, but i am not a fan of his and i do NOT want to see him have any meaningful at bats and note to Arnie: why is it that no matter what i write, you think i am being cocky?
August 30, 200322 yr With TH down someone from Albuquerque will get a few ABs in the 4/5th OF role. Harris isnt going to cut it and I hope to never see him take a swing or "field" a ball in a Marlins uni again. Chad Allen/Abe Nunez should get first crack at it with G-dub as an insurance policy.
