January 23, 200620 yr With the exception of Lenny Harris (who's 90 and can't play the field) and Wes Helms.....the bench is going to be horrible. To leave the bench open for young players is not the way to go....it's a hard job riding the pine. The bullpen is going to be ridiculous. Borowski and Bowyer scare me as closer types. The set-up crew is no better. The Marlins should be calling everyone from Felix Rodriguez to Buddy Groom and inviting them all to camp and hold an open audition for EVERY spot in the bullpen.
January 23, 200620 yr Helms, Treanor, Harris are three solid vets off the bench (Ya, Treanor on this team is a vet). Olivo may also be, depending on what happens with the catcher situation.
January 23, 200620 yr B-Ski might not be that good, but you might want to give Bowyer a chance before you condemn the guy. He has everything needed to be a great guy out of the pen, and the competiton with Resop and Messenger for the closers role in the future will make all 3 that much better.
January 23, 200620 yr Author Bowyer was a throwaway for the Twins.....I'm sure they're not losing any sleep over their decision to trade him. Treanor......solid vet.......have you ever seen him play? A solid vet is not someone with a .212 career average and a .569 career OPS.

A solid vet is not someone with a .212 career average and a .569 career OPS. But he's a backup catcher. They're just supposed to sit there, look happy and take all the abuse in the bullpen and from primadonna pitchers. Even if he does get more starts than nearly every other bench player. :whistle
January 23, 200620 yr I mean, let's be honest, it's not like the Marlins are trying to win games this year. The bench isn't high on the priority list. Then again, it's not like last year's bench was spectacular. Harris and Conine were the only players to top .300 off the bench, and no one hit double figures for homeruns, and Conine's 33 RBI was the top production. Harris is coming back, Helms is pretty much a Conine clone, and Uggla can probably replicate Easley's moderate power/low average production.

January 24, 200620 yr Nate Bump is a good pitcher to have in the bullpen. I think he could be a nice fit in the closer role, or maybe set-up. I think we have a really good solid bullpen: Name Career ERA Nate Bump 4.68 Joe Borowski 3.90, 264 games, 44 saves Tim Bowyer 5.59 but 12 SO in 9.2 IP Josh Johnson or Olsen(Johnson- 3.65) (Olsen - 3.98) Logan Kensing 10.24 Randy Messenger 5.35 Kerry Ligtenberg 3.82, 386 games, 48 saves (invitee) I think Mark Little is a really good backup outfielder, who has been invited to camp. He could back-up All three players in the outfield, Aguila, Reed, and Hermida.

That is light years from "really good, solid." And I hope Aguila is a platoon starter with a vet when all is said and done. Reed and Little are not MLB ballplayers, let alone starters or bench players.

A solid vet is not someone with a .212 career average and a .569 career OPS. Bowyer is hardly a "throwaway". It's just silly to say something like that. Go read his game recaps from last season in AAA or look at his gamelog with the Twins and it's obvious he has the potential to be a quality guy. After his first seven appearances (giving up only one run) with the Twins his era was 1.04. His 5.59 era looks bad only because in his final appearance he got touched up for five runs in one inning, skewing his numbers and inaccurately painting a picture of his fall performance. As for Treanor, he's not going to be confused with the second coming of Thurmond Munson but his bat last season was severely hampered by his injury. Given reasonable health I suspect he's probably a decent .240 hitter, which is acceptable from a backup, especially one whose strong suit is his defense. Had LoDuca not been so badly banged up and Willingham out with a broken arm, you probably would have seen Treanor DL'd part way through the season. It's hard to swing a bat when your left arm is dangling from your shoulder (torn labrum).
January 24, 200620 yr I'm loving all these new mb members who come in here and try to take over the Marlin's forum with their unrelenting 'prospect' banter.
January 24, 200620 yr Then again, it's not like last year's bench was spectacular. Harris and Conine were the only players to top .300 off the bench, and no one hit double figures for homeruns, and Conine's 33 RBI was the top production. Are there benches out there full of .300 20 75 guys or something? What world do you live in that having only 2 guys .300+ on the bench is a bad thing?

January 24, 200620 yr Are you actually suggesting that our bench last year was good? I didn't say so one way or the other. I asked you how in the world you can make a statement such as the team ONLY had two guys hitting .300+ off the bench.
January 24, 200620 yr Let's take a look at the Marlins bench from 2005: Jeff Conine: .304, 3, 33 Lenny Harris: .314, 1, 13 Damion Easley: .240, 9, 30 Matt Treanor: .201, 0, 13 Robert Andino: .159, 0, 1 Joe Dillon: .167, 1, 1 Chris Aguila: .244, 0, 4 What kind of world do you come from when that is hard to replace? Harris is coming back, and Helms put up practically identical numbers to Conine in 2005.
January 24, 200620 yr No, I asked you to show me a team with a bench containing MORE than TWO .300+ hitters on it since you implied that was a LOW amount. get it?
January 24, 200620 yr No, I asked you to show me a team with a bench containing MORE than TWO .300+ hitters on it since you implied that was a LOW amount. get it? Let's take a look at bench production from the other NL East teams: Atlanta: Ryan Langerhans: .267, 8, 42 Wilson Betemit: .305, 4, 20 Julio Franco: .275, 9, 42 Brian Jordan: .247, 3, 24 Brian McCann: .278, 5, 23 Pete Orr: .300, 1, 8 Raul Mondesi: .211, 4, 17 Philly: Jason Michaels: .304, 4, 31 Jim Thome: .201, 7, 30 Todd Pratt: .251, 7, 23 Tomas Perez: .233, 0, 22 Placido Polanco: .316, 3, 20 Ramon Martinez: .286, 1, 9 Marlon Byrd: .308, 0, 0 NY Mets: Victor Diaz: .257, 12, 38 Mike Jacobs: .310, 11, 23 Marlon Anderson: .264, 7, 19 Ramon Castro: .244, 8, 41 Chris Woodward: .283, 3, 18 Notice something, all those benches outhomered and out RBI'd the Marlins bench, and they all had higher total bench averages than the Marlins. After Harris and Conine, the Marlins didn't have a guy over .244. Still care to call that a good bench? And stop putting words in my mouth, I was simply showing that it was foolish for the original poster to suggest that our 2005 bench was the stuff of legendary, or even league average production.

You're fixating on an out of context quote, dumbass. Let's look at the whole damn thing: I mean, let's be honest, it's not like the Marlins are trying to win games this year. And, for good measure, the original post in this thread, which my above response was responding too: With the exception of Lenny Harris (who's 90 and can't play the field) and Wes Helms.....the bench is going to be horrible. Or, pretty much saying that having two capable players on the bench is a bad thing, and implying that the bench last year was something difficult to replace.
