The NBA announced today that Andre Iguodala, the 76ers' second-year guard/forward, has been named as one of the contestants for the NBA's annual slam dunk contest to be held Feb. 18 at the Toyota Center in Houston.

The competition will hold a definitely Philadelphia flavor. Another contestant named by the league was Memphis Grizzlies rookie forward Hakim Warrick, a graduate of Friends Central High.

Defending champion Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks rookie Nate Robinson, a 5-foot-9 guard, round out the field.

The 6-6 Iguodala is third on the Sixers in scoring and rebounding, averaging 12.0 points and 5.9 rebounds while playing in all 44 games to date. His field-goal percentage of 51.4 percent is good for 13th place in the league standings.

 

I'm wicked stoked about Hakim and Iggy.

If the NBA wanted to say who really is the best current dunker and give the fans something to watch they should have like a million plus dollar pot for the winner and get Kobe, Lebron, Carter, Ricky Davis, McGrady, J-Rich, Desmond Mason, and Amare Stoudamire. That's pretty much the ultimate field in the game today.

Ill end up watching it. I love the NBA and NBA All Star weekend is awesome. The SlamDunk contest is a fun event, not too serious, mostly guys just having fun. Would I rather have an MJ vs Nique slam dunk contest instead of Iggy vs Josh Smith, ofcourse, but that aint happening. Id love to see Wade in the dunk contest he is sick with them dunks.

Iggy is a great dunker, Hakim has incredible athleticism like Smith, and Nate Rob is today's Spud Webb, this is gonna be a good slam dunk competition.

Lemme preface this by saying outside of the Sixers and the sprinkled Cuse and Temple guys, i'm not an NBA fan....That said, i'm ecstatic about this slam dunk contest. Warrick made so many tremendous dunks in college that you all oohed and aaahed and Iguodala is a great dunker. Josh Smith is the defending champion and i'm very eager to watch a 5'9 guy dunk the ball...I think this is going to be a great contest and probably the best thing that goes on NBA Saturday night....I think the NBA finally has the right group that's going to entertain us.

I actaully this sounds like it will be pretty good.

 

Watching Robinson, the other AI, and Josh Smith go at it will be fun.

It was flat out AWESOME, everyone was talking about how great it was, how the dunk contest is officially "back," etc. etc. and it seems all of you have already forgotten about last year.

 

Every year it's the same old whining about why isn't Kobe or T-Mac in it and how lame it's going to be, well last year we had the same bitching and moaning before the dunk contest but Josh Smith and Amare/Nash changed all that.

 

Frankly I don't even think Lebron would win a NBA dunk contest, he gets big air and throws it down really hard, but that's it. In that old high school drunk contest they sometimes show on ESPN from 2-3 years ago with Lebron in it, he was pretty crappy and just got big air and threw it down as hard as he could... big deal.

I agree. Amare 'was' a marquee name, that's what made it great. He attracted attention (and Smith in his own right I guess).

 

Maybe Iggy can hold it down this year against Smith, we'll see. I'll watch, but I'm still disappointed. a 4-man roster doesn't cut it in my book.
