Das Texan
eliminate options 2 and 4.  this team will either move or get a new stadium.  south florida...what do you want?  this is directly related to what you people truly want. Fish Fillet
I assume that there will be another hard-fought attempt to get a new stadium, but in the end the team is a goner. It'll be the DC Marlins or the Portland Marlins within the next 4-5 years. There is no fan support for this team. Come to think of it, it's not just people going to the games. The Marlins don't even show up on most people's radar. Give a listen to sportsradio, and a spattering of calls about the Marlins are interspersed between callers arguing over who will be the Dolphin's 3rd string long-snapper.  Miami just ain't a sports town. Dolphins' playoff games don't sell out, Marlins' games don't sell at all, the best college football program in the last two decades can't fill anything bigger than the OB. Hanleylicious
Miami isnt' "not" a sports town, the fans are just very spoiled. The dolphins got about 65,000 for a preseason and 73,000 for the opener. thats pretty good. and look at the canes. as for the marlins. everyone is still hurting for after 1997 and still mad that everyone is gone ( alou, livan, sheff. etc)  I doubt the marlins are going anywhere...atleast for a while

Dolphins' playoff games don't sell out, Marlins' games don't sell at all, the best college football program in the last two decades can't fill anything bigger than the OB. I have to disagree that the Marlins aren't on most people's radar. I think there is a lot of latent interest in the Marlins and baseball in general in South Florida. It just needs to be tapped and translated into people going to games. How? By winning games and establishing a relationship with the fans, something this franchise hasn't done until maybe now. A new stadium further south would help, IMHO. You can't judge interest in baseball based solely on what you hear on sports radio, it only represents a sample of the actual and potential sports market. I stopped listening to sports radio 2 years ago because it's always the same people calling about the same stupid things. Â I will agree that Miami isn't a big sports town. There's too much to do and too many people who come from other places and who don't really care much about sports in general (this is not entirely a bad thing, by the way). The Dolphins did end up selling out those playoff games, just not in time for the blackout to be lifted. If I recall, they weren't the only team to have that happen to them. Â I think they'll either get a new stadium or move somewhere else. One is dependent on the other.

CapeFish
Seriously, most Marlins fans wouldn't even listen to WQAM. Their normal ratings (includes Dolphins, Marlins, Canes play-by-play) is less than the average Marlins attendance.

Hopefully, the Marlins will be able to change radio affiliates when the year 2005 comes around. Didn't you oringinally propose a move to News Radio 610 WIOD? WIOD does recieve better ratings, attracts a variety of listeners, and recieves a stronger signal in the day and night, correct?
jonnylons
Fish, Das - go away. You are both just so negative...you have no vision and no paitence. In fact, everyone here has got to learn something - patience. It took several years to watch our fan base degenerate - although it got a huge boost from Wayne H-Bomb Huizenga. It will take some time to get it back. This team could win all it wants - but it has to be kept together to prove to the doubters - not the fans - that this team is here to stay. Those that are there now want to be there, but those that arent at the games dont trust it yet and are too scared to invest again. They have to be proven wrong, and then they will come back. In the meantime, Fish, Das - go hug each other and hold each other's hands and repeat to yourselves that it is going to be allright. Stop crying...you annoy me. Didn't you oringinally propose a move to News Radio 610 WIOD? WIOD does recieve better ratings, attracts a variety of listeners, and recieves a stronger signal in the day and night, correct? Yes, I would model the deal after the Devil Rays deal on "Rays Radio 970 WFLA". You know that WFLA is a blowtorch, and it has a great support for the Rays accross it's brother stations. (WDAE 620 The Sports Animal, The CC FM's) Marlins would have something similar with WIOD, which has a better signal at night than WQAM (1kw for WQAM vs. 5kw for WIOD) and would have the ability to build a good radio network of Clear Channel stations around the state. The ability to promote the team on WRFX 940 Fox Sports Radio, Y-100, Zeta 94.9, The Beat 103.5, Big 106, and the other Clear Channel stations/billboards in south Florida would be huge for the Marlins. WQAM's Beasley Broadcating = 17th largest radio company. WIOD's Clear Channel Worldwide = largest radio company. WIOD has better ratings compared to WQAM. I like the sound of "Marlins Radio 610 WIOD". Miami-Ft. Lauderdale Radio Ratings http://www.radioandrecords.com/Subscribers...ain.asp?mkt=mfh Enjoy, WIOD in 2005!

Das Texan
Clear Channel sucks.  but they are based in San Antonio.  They own like every damn radio station in the country.   If they dont own it...give them time, they will own it soon. Das Texan
wiod needs to improve their signal.  clear channel's flagship station can be heard throughout much of texas.  i can get it on a clear night in dallas....300 miles from san antonio.  on average...the coverage is between 200 and 250 miles
Das Texan
oh and just a note so some of you dont think i am negative.  i am joking on the signal strength of wiod.
CapeFish
Das, Clear Channel is just what we need. Corporate to slam down Marlins games on the radio on their stations. They have the Heat and they have excellent promotion in Miami. CC is a smart move for the Marlins. Rays on WFLA pull in 6.2 rating and CC isn't afraid of having baseball on newsradio. WLW/Reds, WTAM/Indians, KOGO/Padres are just a few more CC/MLB agreements.
CapeFish
Das, WIOD cannot increase power because of 620 in Tampa, WQAM can't increase power because of 540 and 580 in Orlando. there are only two strong night stations in Miami, WAQI 710 (spanish) and WRFX 940. WIOD and a good, loyal Marlins radio network by CC will solve our problems. Melbourne used to have the Marlins on FM and Newsradio AM back in 1993-1997, when WQAM dropped CC for many affiliates, it lost most of the network. CC used to own most of the stations, but WQAM didn't want a thing to do with CC because CC's WIOD (owned by PAX back then in transition to CC) started a bidding war to keep the Dolphins and WQAM had to go overbudget to get the Dolphins in 1996. Das Texan
like i said cape....  i was joking on the signal strength thing.   but as far as clear channel being bad...that is not untrue.  while for news channels i guess its ok.  but for mainstream stations...its bad. it stifles competition and possibly makes it more difficult for a higher variety of artists on stations.  but thats a different subject. CapeFish
Back before 1995, WIOD/WINZ had: Neal Rogers Dolphins Hank Goldberg Heat WQAM had: Rush Limbaugh Music (Country and Oldies) Some sports (Marlins and Panthers) After 1996: Rush and Neal switched, with Rush on 940 WINZ (now WRFX) WQAM dropped Music, picked up 'Phins and Hank. WIOD added supertalk format, WINZ (WRFX) stayed Newsradio. After 1997 or so WINZ and WIOD switched formats and WINZ eventually became all sports WRFX. That is south florida radio history in brief. You did tone down your negativity in this post - as opposed to the 'our attendance suck' thread. (gee, is that negative?) Like I said in another post, try formulating some sort of criticial thinking rather than dropping generalizing statements. Because ANYONE (including Le Retard) can do that. Now, try addressing the issues that you raised as opposed to focusing on non-issues, e.g. whether or not you are negative. I dont care whether you are or not... CapeFish
Das, all the florida stations are historical and therefore have local hosts. Local in florida means anything in florida. Dr. Laura and Rush have always been carried big time in this state. Neal has always been popular in Miami. Nothing has really changed in the last 10 years. CapeFish
Speaking of CC, it is funny to see user "Randy Rhoads" on this thread. The name is similar to CC/WJNO's Randi Rhoads who is a liberal talk show host out of Palm Beach. She wins her pod if I remember right. Gonk
Uh, some of you guys need to get your facts straight before you start posting. Miami is probably one of the best sports towns in the country. The Miami Dolphins SOLD-OUT every game for roughly the past 7 or 8 years. The Marlins were in the top 7 attendence in the NL from 1993 to 1998. There were a few years we were even #2 or #3 in the NL I believe. Have you guys forgotten the Miami Hurricanes? The Orange Bowl is packed every game with off-the-wall fans.  The Heat don't do so shabby either, and it will be a lot better this year because they picked up Lamar Odom (a big-time NBA guy.) The Marlins just need to sign a big-name guy to draw crowds. Besides Dontrelle Willis who has really fallen out of the spotlight, we don't have one big name guy on our team. If you look at the top attendence teams, they have atleast one or two huge guys playing for them.  If we make the playoffs this year, we need to make a big push to resign most of the team and an effort to sign a big name guy. People like to watch guys who are in the media a lot.  I say we pick up Pedro Martinez
