John Patterson Scott Olsen

Olsen makes first start of 2006

Washington (2-9) at Florida (3-6), 6:05 p.m. ET

Gaining some positive momentum is crucial for a young team like the Marlins.

Now that they've won back-to-back games for the first time this season, the squad with 11 rookies is looking to keep the momentum going.

Yet, another rookie is taking the mound on Saturday against the Nationals.

Scott Olsen opened the season with Triple-A Albuquerque. But the plan since late in Spring Training was to add the left-hander to the rotation for this start.

With Olsen now starting, the Marlins have three left-handers in the rotation. With the way the schedule fell, all three were used in order. Jason Vargas started on Thursday, and Dontrelle Willis pitched on Friday.

While Olsen is getting Saturday's start, it is unclear when the rookie will pitch again. Because the team is off Thursday before opening a three-game series in Philadelphia, manager Joe Girardi may switch up his starters. Either Olsen or right-hander Sergio Mitre, who is set to start on Sunday against the Nationals, will make that Friday start. The other will throw on Saturday.

The Marlins are also taking a wait-and-see approach regarding when rookie right fielder Jeremy Hermida will return from a sore right hip flexor. Out since the ninth inning on Tuesday, Hermida took batting practice on Friday. Most likely he won't return until Monday, at Cincinnati, at the earliest. But if he is feeling better, he may play on Sunday.

First base coach Perry Hill had an excused personal absence on Friday night. While he was with the team for pregame workouts, he left before the game started. And he is returning to his home in Texas to tend to a personal matter. He likely will be away from the club several days and rejoin them on the road. Hitting coach Jim Presley coached first base for Hill.

Pitching matchup

? FLA: LHP Scott Olsen (1-1, 3.98 ERA in 2005)

Optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque in Spring Training, Olsen was activated on Thursday afternoon. The Marlins went with a four-man rotation the first week-and-a-half because two off-days enabled them to not need a fifth starter. The left-hander appeared in five games last year, with four starts. He's logged 20 1/3 innings, and he hasn't faced Washington.

? WAS: RHP John Patterson (0-0, 6.30 ERA)

The Marlins have had Patterson's number, especially last season when he was 0-3 with a 4.56 ERA in five games against them. He's 1-4 with a 4.22 ERA overall against them, with a 1-2 and 2.77 ERA at Dolphins Stadium. Patterson got his second straight no-decision against the Astros on Monday, but his six-inning stint, in which he allowed three earned runs, lowered his ERA from 9.00 to 6.30.
