Death Penalty for Rape of Child?

Featured Replies

My problem with the death penalty is that it doesn't really have any benefits. It doesn't deter crime, and in many cases, I'm sure the criminals don't care much for their lives to begin with.

Rotting for live in prison has to be far worse than just getting killed. I could never live like that.

I am against the death penalty. It serves no purpose in this case just like all the other cases than to get our humanistic revenge for death or now in this case for scarring a young child(ren)

Does it suck? Yes.

Should these people be put to death? No.

Why? Becuase in the end it solves zero. The only thing done is to say, hooray! we took another bad man off the streets and put him in the chair so we never have to worry about him ever again. Big damn deal.

Is also much more costly to kill someone than to just throw them in the hole for the rest of their lives.

You need to make the most harsh crimes mean something, to most killers and all, death isnt that meaningful to them, thus giving them the chair doesnt seem to be doing the job. Put them in a 10x10 cell for the rest of their lives and make them truly suffer. Cheaper and probably more effective.

It does solve something: Prison overcrowding. Granted, that could be solved in many other ways such as reducing jail sentences for smaller crimes and leaglizing some of the more harmless drugs.

Also, it'd be cheaper for executions if it didn't take 15 years of holding them in prison to carry out the execution and if judges would quit deciding that people on death row deserve steak and wine every night for dinner. It does currently cost about twice as much per day to keep someone on death row as it does to keep them in the general population though.

That being said. No one should be put to death on their first conviction. Everyone should be given the chance to reform. Lock him away for 20-30 years with daily counseling sessions, etc.

You are eliminating maybe 10 people a year. That solves nothing when it comes to prison overcrowding.

But the cost of killing someone isnt the most important key. What does killing someone truly solve other than our humanisitc, barbaric quest for revenge?

It ensures that this person will never commit such a heinous crime against other human beings. In my eyes these people are not people. If you wanna make them lab rats fine make them lab rats. If you wanna keep them in jail forever do that, but you know that never happens, people never serve their full term. In my opinion the only way they never commit such barbaric things is to, like Accord says "OFF" them.

And yet the main thing is for the 'revenge' factor, why else are the families of those involved there?

The problem with this is that it only applies to Children, yet it equally affects adult victims. This is stupid.

And yes this guy is scum, but he didn't kill anyone. I don't even support dealth penalty accept in serial killer cases or crimes so gruesome (i.e. cannabalism after killing) should be up for it.

It would be a much greater number without the lengthy appeals process, etc. More people are put on death row than are executed each year, at least last I checked (admittedly long ago).

My whole thing with the death penalty is that it should only be used on those that are proven to not be able to assimilate into society and will never be part of it. Aka who have been convicted on seperate occassions of serious violent felonies.

I for one think it is far crueler to sentence someone to 30 years in prison and then kick them into the street than to execute them. I am absolutely, unequivocably against "Life without parole" sentences. If someone is deemed dangerous to society and unredeemable, they should be put to death. At least unless you want to reform our prisons into something other than "punish".

I'm sure there are more than 10 child rapists in prisons nationwide.

Kill them all, let god sort em out.

Repeat yourself much?

Holy sh*t, Admin posted in the bullpen. :lol

And Accord, what do you think this is, Vietnam?

Kill them all, let god sort em out.

if we let god sort em out wouldnt that entail letting him kill them himself? it's more like : force the issue, kill 'em.

Fine, someone brought God into it, let's go in that direction.

Why don't we put God on trial?

He's to blame for this guy, essentially, right? God created him. God gave him the ability to molest children. I'm not so sure we should punish this guy at all, now. Why not punish God? Basic problem of evil.

If God is the first cause, why not figure out how God screwed up in the first place, if we're going to bring religion into the argument (or lack thereof).

god also created help for the sick and mentally deranged. not his choice ones of his creations gave into sin and perverse wants instead of seeking help. but i think it's stupid to say kill 'em let god sort 'em out cause then you should believe god will kill them or do what he wants to them otherwise and you don't need to force the issue. i doubt god likes being told what to do.

but my killing people arent we committing a sin also?

remind me when God allowed us as United States citizens to decide who should be allowed to live and who should not be?

hell who are we as the human race to decide that?

I thought it was God's job to decide who will get into jail. By supporting the death penalty and allowing for the barbaric eye for an eye you are just as guilty, well unless you are Jewish, which half hte board is ;)

Jesus taught us the Golden Rule.

Sorry the theme of let God sort them out is stupid.

No, those people you simply throw into jail for the remainder of their life, give them subsistence on a daily basis and let them rot away the remaining of their life. That would do a hell of a lot more for people than simply knocking them off.

I'm sorry but if you're going to bring God into this, you would be anti-capital punishment, and that's just the way it is. As a Christian I have struggled with it but I know it's the truth and how God would want our law to be.

Depends, though, Das.

The Old Testament God could have smote him, because God is above morality. I mean, humans are really the only moral creatures. God's above all that.

New Testament "Christ" God, you're right, he'd probably choose to try and save him.

However, causally, it doesn't make sense for God to "sort them out" in the first place if God is, in fact, the first mover and cause of everything. He put that guy on this earth to teach us something. A lesson, maybe. I don't know what it is, but if God put him here, he also gave that guy the ability to rape kids and act on it. So, there's no reason for God to sort anything out.

Which is why most Christians are hypocritical, especially those in favor of the death penalty and against abortion.

Let's not get into for/against-death penalty/abortion, because both of those seem so f***ing hypocritical to me...

they are. and so are all the Christian Churches who support one and not the other.

hell lets take a look at mr bush himself the master of the little needle back when he was in the governor's mansion here in Texas.

Bush is not a true Christian, he is member of the skull and bones. He says he is a Christian, that is a front. The catholic church is anti Death penalty, anti war(if not for self defence), and anti mason (skull and bones) So he is not the kind of Christian he says he is. We are all weak, but these are some major issues that he just ignors.

Are you the Pope?

Did you actually pay attention to what I said? I said I support the death penalty BECAUSE I disagree with the morality of the treatment you just state. I think what you offer as a solution is far crueler than the death penalty because it attacks the mind and soul.

Obviously we have a vast philosophical difference of the morality of prisons, which is pretty typical of the debate in general, and why there will never be consensus within the US.

so morally its alright to execute someone?

so morally its alright to execute someone?

To me it is if someone has proven themselves an un-reformable danger to society. If given the choice between putting them to death or locking them in a large closet for the rest of their lives, it is far less reprehensible to put them to death in my opinion.
