September 18, 200321 yr And I do think Lee is better than Conine...so I would not be in favor of the swap. So do I FG. Or rather, let me put it this way, if I had to pick one of them to be on my team for the next 4 years, I'd take Lee. He's younger, already puts up decent offensive numbers and has an even higher ceiling. I don't think I'd say over their careers that Lee is a better player than Conine though. But things are not equal here. With the payroll problems looming, I think it's a pretty good replacement job if you can replace Lee at 6 or 7 mill with Conine at 3. They've got to save money somewhere...
September 18, 200321 yr The bring Conine in to let Derrek walk deal is great. Frees up cash, doesn't truly diminish the team. I would love to have Derrek back but sadly it seems as if he is destined to be gone already with Coney's signing. Fair enough in my opinion. We lose a little O from DLee but make up for it in consistency (first half esp.) and leadership from Jeff.
September 18, 200321 yr I've never doubted Conine....Even if he was batting .18 I would still be behind him. He's my favorite player of all-time. You could tell Conine was going to explode...He was (And still is) seeing the ball like a hawk and having good patience at the plate. He was the perfect man to get once Lowell went down because he was the only player who could help us now and help us in the future (To replace Lee at first.). He's solid all-around.
September 18, 200321 yr I have doubted conine and i still will until he can do this for us consistantly. He is a very solid player but has started out bad with us. I hope yesterday's game can be what i am hoping for.
September 19, 200321 yr i dunno, i don't remember a lot of people bashing Conine myself. the only ones i can recall ripping the deal was the Braves fan here & Shamrock, but i think that was more due to losing the prospects than getting Jeff. (maybe i'll dig through the old threads) I've always thought Conine would be a nice addition & a decent substitution for Lee when the inevitable happens after the season. I was happy as can be when Beinfest made the deadline deal. Was tough to see him struggle the last couple of weeks but it was really just a matter of time before he got going. He's a pro. Im still as strongly against the deal as when it first happened. Im not going to root against Jeff or anything ridiculous like that...and I also know hes capable of being an average plug for our OF. I just thought (and was proven correct) that Banks/TH platoon could have pulled off basically what Jeff is doing now or better. And to think a Lee for Conine deal would be desirable in the midst of a playoff race is just ridiculous. :plain Im not one to jump on any bandwagons..even if Jeff performed to his season averages I would still be against the deal. Say what you will but thats my opinion and Im sticking with it. Go Marlins though!

Neither one of those guys pulls off what Niner did in the middle game of that series. Simple as that.

September 19, 200321 yr If your platoon of TH/Banks played agaisnt the Phils we get swept. Neither one of those guys pulls off what Niner did in the middle game of that series. Simple as that. So you can really only point to one game where he made a huge impact...a game in which we won 11-4.
September 19, 200321 yr It is just an assumption, but its likely that TH/Banks would have put up better or close to the same numbers.

September 19, 200321 yr WHOAH YOU GOT ME thats just it, i don't got you. What are you trying to say? I can only assume your saying, TH/Banks are better than Conine based simply on what YOU think they would do and not on any factual evidence provided on the baseball diamond. If I'm wrong please feel free to correct me.
September 19, 200321 yr OK. When the trade first happened the numbers showed that Conine would offer 5 hits more than the TH/Banks platoon for the month. So all I'm really trying to say is even if Conine hits at his career averages (which he didnt) the trade still would not make sense to me. I remain in the minority still in this position and I'm not going to change it over one awesome game. Both DR and I said Conine would have to hit something like .900OPS to make much of a difference THIS month. Obviously over a full season Conine's numbers would be better then the TH/Banks platoon, but we are talking about one month. I dont really want to argue over this deal anymore just dont go saying "omg hes on the bandwagon now lol!," because I wont be. But go Marlins!
September 19, 200321 yr Actually I appreciate you sticking to your guns 'Rock. Wasn't trying to single you out or anything. Like I said, you were mostly just opposed to the trade, not to Conine himself, which is totally understandable. To be fair, I'd be interested in seeing what Banks could do with a full season of at-bats.
September 19, 200321 yr Thanks HC...I'm with ya on the Banks thing as well....at least it is a possible cheap option for 1B/LF.
