This September: Original Unaltered Trilogy on DVD

May 03, 2006

[ doc_title ] Fans can look forward to a September filled with classic Star Wars nostalgia, led by the premiere of LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game and the long-awaited DVD release of the original theatrical incarnations of the classic Star Wars trilogy.

In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie, as well as the original theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.

See the title crawl to Star Wars before it was known as Episode IV; see the pioneering, if dated, motion control model work on the attack on the Death Star; groove to Lapti Nek or the Ewok Celebration song like you did when you were a kid; and yes, see Han Solo shoot first.

[ doc_title ] This release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st. International release will follow on or about the same day. Each original theatrical version will feature Dolby 2.0 Surround sound, close-captioning, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish for their U.S. release. International sound and subtitling vary by territory.

"Over the years, a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. "We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we're very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars. Topping it off with a new interactive adventure makes September 12 a red-letter day for Star Wars fans."

OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They should digitally remaster a lot of the second trilogy so it doesn't suck so much.

Like re-write and re-shoot?

No, just digitally animatize the actors and give it to Dreamworks and the guys behind Shrek. They could do something with it.

I swear I thought Natalie Portman was going to rip off a mask and reveal she was a droid at some point.

Not all her fault, not much you can do with that script.

I'm impressed by the fact that they're managed to release a DVD that has as its primary selling point the fact that it hasn't been changed at all.

It's really quite brilliant. How many people bought the remade one because they were too impatient to wait for this one? There's going to be a lot of remastered Star Wars DVDs on sale on EBay.

Now I can watch a version other than my bootlegs.

God bless America.

I disagree, they're only selling it because they released the original to all those who had to have Star Wars on DVD (still got my VHS ORIGINALZ, boi), and then figured out a way to get more money. Well, not really figured out, I'm sure that was the plan all along.

Plus, it's not like all the crap from the original three discs aren't going to be on there.

Anyone heard any pricing? Sounds like it will be a barebones DVD with no special features (which is fine with me, I've gotten all the special features I could want with the previous DVD releases) so I wonder what they're going to charge. Typically, barebone DVD's go for about $10 but this is Lucas we're talking about.

$24.99 a piece.

Admit it, you want the special editions just for the comic value of those awful song remakes they made at Jabba the Hutt's palace. Those might be the worst things in all of creation. wtf was Lucas thinking with those. The old ones were cool in a puppet-y kind of way. I'd rather the characters look like puppet than cartoons.

Totally agree on all points. I grew up singing the song performed by Cy Snoodles (too nerdy?), and when they changed it I was really peeved.

As far as the computer animation goes, I'd much rather see a puppet filmed in real 3-dimensional space, than watch a C.G. cartoon. The C.G. kind of interrupts the whole fantasy, because it's so obviously unreal. Whereas, a good puppet doesn't.

Speaking of puppets...

Anyone familiar with The Dark Crystal? It was a Jim Henson production from the 80's, a fantasy story acted by puppets. It's fantastic. Anyhow, Henson studios is in production for a sequel, the visuals composition will be a hybrid of puppets and CG. It should be very interesting.

Yeah, Dark Crystal and Labyrinth were both done by Henson if I'm not mistaken. Dark Crystal I've seen a bunch, Labyrinth not so much. I remember Dark Crystal had those Skekseez, or however you spell it, they scared the hell out of me. Actually, all the puppests were kind of scary. I mean even the good guys were kind of creepy looking.

Labyrinth rules and you owe it to yourself to see it.

Dark Crystal is the "cool" Labyrinth. Way too much singing going on in Labyrinth for my taste.

Labryinth is so much better, you psychos. And it had David Bowie, which means its automatically cooler than Dark Crystal. Not that either one of these movies is going into the Pantheon of Cool any time soon.
