What is your perception of Derrek Lee trade now 5/06?

Featured Replies

on a side note in our trade of d.lee....

i saw hee seop choi play for the red sox minor league team against the syracuse skychiefs the other day...

what a stupid trade.

bad trade

but

we ripped you for willis

we ripped you for nolasco and pinto for JP

so I guess it is all is fair?

Like Fishfan79 says......the Cubs got smoked with the Willis deal and the Nolasco/Pinto deal was just a yard short of castration.

And by the way. The D-Lee deal was not a "trade". It was a classic Marlins salary dump. D-Lee is a class act. He made unbelievable defensive plays long before the morons at ESPN discovered him and I wish him nothing but the best.

Also saying DLee would of had the same breakout year if he stayed with Florida is less likely due to the Bill Robinson factor.

One day, when I have children, and my son comes home with a DVD called "Bill Robinsons guide to hitting" he will be swiftly grounded.

Except for Beinfest's keen ability to misread a player's intentions, this was a good trade. We traded a player from a pack we couldn't possibly afford to keep all. We got back a promising hitter who posted hit better than league-average for his position over his tenure before being flipped in another trade that Beinfest thought would improve the club.

That none of the players lived up to their promise and that the Marlins experienced the worst long-term ramifications of the deal (losing Lee, Penny, salary room and a chance at the playoffs in 04 and 05 with the acquired overpaid and declining deadweight) doesn't change the actions of the deal as it occured. Hindsight is 20/20.

w.e we traded Lee because we didn't have money to pay him,i'm happy that Lee's kicking ass in Chicago,he's a good guy,he deserves what he has and it was fun having him as a Marlin..We weren't trading for talent,we were trading just because we didn't have money..

Does it bother you that the Marlins SALARY DUMPED Derrek Lee instead of trying to get REAL TALENT back instead? The Indians were in Salary Dump mode a few years ago, but they made sure they got Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore in return. The Cubs knew they were fleecing the Marlins (as I did). Every time I look at Ronny Cedeno and Felix Pie, I think they shouldve been wearing a Marlin uniform

ALSO, you guys might not be happy to hear this, but the Chicago Media is calling for the Cubs to make offers for DTrain and Cabrera, sending over B Level minor-leaguers in return, becase the "marlins are in salary dump mode". I can imagine how frustrated you guys must be .............. that the Billion Dollar Corporation has resorted to treating the Marlins like their farm team.

Ignoring the real talent of those players at the time and the widely-regarded media opinion(s) about the trade...

Colon was regarded as the best pitcher available that trading season. The Expos beat a number of teams to the punch by adding him to compete in July, August, September and hopefully October. Lee was an off-season acquisition, just weeks before the Marlins had to decide whether they wanted to offer him a huge raise in arbitration or not.

I just love revisionist history. Joseph Stalin would be proud.

What actually happened was Lee was in the final year of arbitration, was going to ask for a fortune (and he was going to get it, because of the way arbitration works), much more than he ultimately signed with the Cubs for, and the Marlins in getting Hee Seop Choi, actually got something for nothing, because in the alternative, they knew they weren't going to arbitration with the guy and would at best get a draft choice (although if I go back and research it, we might not have gotten even that because of how the deadline rules work regarding free agency, arbitration, etc.).

The Marlins were not in a trade for equivalent value position and to imply they were and make your argument as if they were, either means you don't know what you're talking about factually, or in the alternative, you're just being rude and insulting.

As for this bulls*** about being a farm team for the Cubs it too is insulting on it's face and clearly by the tone of it's author, it was meant to be. The "Chicago media" (you really should learn how to capitalize properly) can make all the suggested trades they want if that's what it takes to sell papers but neither Hendry nor Beinfest are fools and regardless of how many beers one consumes on Rush Street, even a newbie baseball fan with a modicum of common sense (it isn't by accident that Chicago will always be known as the "Second City", so palpable is their inferiority complex when it comes to NYC) knows that Willis or Cabrera, alone would fetch some of the most valued prospects and/or young bonafide major leaguers as opposed to some "...B Level minor-leaguers in return". The feeding frenzy that would ensue were Miguel Cabrera (and if Willis has a few more starts like last night, Dontrelle as well) made available would bring huge offers from at least a dozen teams who would fall all over themselves trying to get in line to just have their proposal heard.

So go back to Rush Street, have a few more pops and try and count the days until the cast comes off D Lee's hand. I hear it could be three months+ before he's ready to suit up again.

Derrek Lee is gone. Life goes on. The only real issue is how badly we took advantage of Chicago in the Nolasco, Pinto and Mitre for Pierre trade. If that sets any kind of benchmark or is any indication of what Chicago would pay up for a Willis or Cabrera, nevermind both, the mind boogles at what the offer would be. Yes, there are some teams, and you know the west coast teams I'm talking about, with the pool of talent to at least get a listen to, but Chicago, personally I don't see it.

The Chicago media is "calling" for the Cubs to make offers for DTrain and Cabrera?

:lol

why would that bother anyone?
