Ramirez avoids serious injury

By Juan C. Rodriguez, Posted May 18 2006

ATLANTA ? Joe Girardi thought the worst when he saw Hanley Ramirez swing and miss at a pitch and clutch his shoulder in the ninth inning Tuesday night.

Girardi initially through Ramirez broke a hamate bone in his hand, an injury that requires at least a month to heal. The prognosis is much better for Ramirez, who underwent an MRI Wednesday.

Ramirez said his shoulder popped in and out when he reached for and swung through a Chris Reitsma changeup. The same thing happened last season in the minors and Ramirez wasn't out long, so he's confident of a return to the lineup this weekend at Tampa Bay.

Ramirez pinch ran in the 11th inning Wednesday and scored the go-ahead run, but he likely will not start today.

"It still hurts a little bit, but with the ice it's getting better," Ramirez said.

"When it happened last year, I only missed three days, and it was worse. I don't feel that bad now. In the instant when I felt it I got scared because it popped in and out. I didn't want to move it."

"It was like three-quarters out [and the shoulder went back in]," said Ramirez of how he felt on Tuesday night. "Last year [when it happened], I got dizzy and I threw up."

Thanks for the TMI Hanley :lol .
