FBI searches congressman's office

Rep. William Jefferson is focus of federal bribery probe

Saturday, May 20, 2006; Posted: 8:52 p.m. EDT (00:52 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- FBI agents were on Capitol Hill on Saturday searching the office of Rep. William Jefferson as part of a bribery investigation into the Louisiana Democrat, government officials said.

Agents searched Jefferson's New Orleans, Louisiana, home in August, but Saturday marked the first time the FBI has ever searched a congressman's Capitol Hill office, one official said.

The search in the Rayburn Office Building began at 7:15 p.m. and was expected to last several hours, FBI spokeswoman Deborah Weierman said. The affidavit and search warrant are sealed, but a portion would be made public once the search is complete, she said.

Weierman said the search was "in conjunction with an ongoing public corruption investigation."

The Justice Department has been investigating Jefferson's involvement in telecommunications deals in Africa and elsewhere. The House Ethics Committee launched an investigation of him last week.

Vernon Jackson of Louisville, Kentucky, pleaded guilty in federal court this month to bribing the congressman with more than $400,000 in payments, company stock and a share of the profits to promote a Kentucky company's high-tech business ventures in Africa. (Full story)

The cloud over Jefferson comes as Democratic leaders have been attacking what they call a "culture of corruption" surrounding the Republican leadership in Congress.

With midterm elections looming, Democrats are trying to highlight GOP ties to the influence-peddling investigation targeting lobbyist Jack Abramoff and last year's guilty plea of California Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, now serving an eight-year stretch for taking bribes from defense contractors.

In a news conference last week, Jefferson said he was innocent and that he would remain in office while he fights any charges. (Full story)

"I wish to say emphatically that in all of my actions that are here under scrutiny, that I have never intended to dishonor my office, or you, the public, and I certainly did not sell my office," Jefferson told reporters.

A government official close to the investigation said the search was conducted when few people are on Capitol Hill because they believed that time would be "appropriate."

A spokeswoman for Jefferson had no comment on the search.

This was a Democrat. At this rate the American public will have absolutely no faith in any elected officials. Why turn out to vote when they're all crooks.

The very definition of politician encompasses crook. :plain

Wait a minute....

Me not knowing anything about this man, I thought he was a Republican?

Thread subheading and article both say Democrat.

Can you point out where it says he's a Dem? Sorry, I must be really tired and looked over it.

First sentence.

Also, I don't think a Republican could ever be elected with the name William Jefferson.

That's it. I probably just skipped over the first sentence looking for the juicy stuff. I saw the word 'rep' so many times I got the wrong idea. (And yes, I know it means Representative)

he's a Dem, unless his website is lying.

Crap, you mean both sides are corrupt? Shocked, yes shocked I am!

OMGovernment!

Also, I don't think a Republican could ever be elected with the name William Jefferson.

:lol

OK, so that's one Democrat to seven or more Republicans involved in corruption scandals. Oh well.

Link please.

Or are you talking out of your ass again?

Moderate my ass.

First off, the very fact that Jack Abramoff is a huge Republican and follows Republican causes should give some pause. The information that comes out of his case is going to hurt Republicans much much much more than democrats.

But here you go:

Sure I realize that. But I took a shot at the Dems part of his statement.

They aren't so innocent.

BUT NICE TRY THOUGH!!!

You say William Jefferson is the "only one?" Oh please.

The governor of Alabama who is a democrat was just recently charged with racketeering, accepting $500,000 worth of bribes, and a whole list of other crooked stuff. Why this wasn't widely reported like all of the republican ones by the national media sure is a mystery.

Democratic Congress Jim McDermott was convicted of turning over illegally taped phone calls to reporters in exchange for cash. Dick Durbin accepted free vacations to destinations such as Hawaii, Italy, and several other exotic locales all paid for by interest groups in Illinois.

Nancy Pelosi, while she's never violated any laws, is an incredible hypocrite in regards to bribery. While the whole Abramoff thing was going on, she made a speech lobbying for reform to include banning House members from accepting gifts from lobbyists - in 1995 she voted AGAINST a ban on gifts from lobbyists. Typical Democrat right there.

And let's not forget the gifts and "personal loans" from S&L interests to a democratic committee chairman that resulted in a half trillion dollar scandal and a $125 billion dollar bill that tax payers would have to pay.

Or who could forget Dan Rostenkowski, the democratic chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee who was convicted on embezzlement charges, among other things.

And this short list isn't even the beginning of all the corruption in the democractic party, yes there have been some crooked republicans, but don't sit here trying to act holier than thou, look in the mirror and realize that there are just as many, if not MORE crooked democrats than there are republicans.

Bill Frist is also under investigation, although that hasn't gone all that far. Also not counted are guys like Scooter Libby, and several other White House officials, who are all Republicans.

It's actually quite simple: Jack Abramoff had no reason to bribe Democrats, since they have had no power in several years. He was a Republican anyway, but he was vying for control over the majority party in Congress and the White House.

Accord:

1. The governor of Alabama is a Republican, Bob Riley.

2. McDermott didnt leak the tapes for cash nor did he violate a criminal act. He was sued by John Boehner in civil court.

3. Can you give a link to the Durbin allegations? Im having trouble finding anything on the web.

4. Your Pelosi argument might be one of the stupidest ones youve ever made and youve made plenty. Her vote in 1995 somehow implicates her in corruption? There are thousands of reasons why congressman and senators vote the way they do, ie bill too lenient or needs more stuff covered. Usually these votes are distorted to trick stupid people into concluding stupid things. I bet I could make Tom Delay out to be a abortion loving liberal and you would fall for it.

5. The S & L scandal, which happend 12 years ago, cost the dems the house and senate. Im guessing youre ok with that punishment when its the dems but not when the reps are having corruption problems?

6.Rostenkowski was over ten years ago. You seriously have to go that far back? I guess because of what some democrat did in 1904, its ok for Republicans to be corrupt? Hey, that dem in 1904 did it!

It's pretty clear you got most of this crap from some central Republican source. Clearly you got most of it wrong. I suggest doing your own research.

2. That is not true, he did violate federal law: "But on March 29, 2006 the court ruled 2-1 that McDermott violated federal law when he turned over the illegally recorded tape to the New York Times and other media outlets." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_McDermott

3. The article was on the Chicago Sun Times website a few months ago (http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-travel15.html), but it's no longer active. However, here is a quote from the article:

"Sen. Dick Durbin ... took four trips paid for by outside interests and has assets of about $900,000, according to annual reports released on Tuesday.

...

Durbin traveled to Hawaii, Italy, India, Bangladesh and South Africa, according to his report. The non-partisan Aspen Institute paid for two trips and the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations another and the fourth by the taxpayer-funded Democratic Policy Group. These free trips -- not to be confused with official congressional travel -- are the subject of more intense partisan political scrutiny this year"

4. I never said it implicates her in anything corruption related, I merely stated that it just shows how much of a hypocrital dirtbag she is.

5.

You know the difference between a federal civil violation and a criminal violation?

And how does it show her as a hypocritical dirtbag she is? Do you even realize how this works? Republicans propose a law making child molesting a federal crime punishable by 1 day in prison. Congressman Accord says this isnt good enough. The law is put forth on the floor for vote and is the only proposed solution to make it to the floor. Congressman Accord votes no because it isnt harsh enough. Congressman Accord now supports child molestors.

Please show me what her motives were in that vote.

Dick Durbin accepted free vacations to destinations such as Hawaii, Italy, and several other exotic locales all paid for by interest groups in Illinois.

Yeah like that one isn't commonplace on both sides of the aisle... please.
