2006 MLB Trading Deadline

Featured Replies

Post your rumors, stories, anything regarding the trade deadline here.

We could pin this and could really fuel some discussion about what could happen by the deadline this season.

Here's a quick rumor that has been stirring for the Tigers - Bobby Abreu coming to Detroit in exchange for prospects:

Link

We know a guy they could be targeting: Phillies outfielder Bobby Abreu, who put on a humdinger of a home-run show during last July's All-Star Game revelry at Comerica Park, where he toppled Pudge Rodriguez at the end of a long and dramatic evening of super-hero theater.

The latter point has little bearing on the Tigers' presumed interest, except to enhance notions Abreu would (a) be a heck of a hitter in Motown, and that (b) he might be happy to waive his no-trade clause and join a playoff-contending team should the Tigers get aggressive.

Austing Kearns is on the block.

According to cnnsi.com:

"The Reds are offering outfielder Austin Kearns for pitching in hopes of repeating the Wily Mo Pena trade that put GM Wayne Krivsky on the map. Krivsky would be wise to try to resurrect the Kearns-for-Jake Westbrook deal that was discussed earlier this season, though that may be difficult because Westbrook's value has continued to rise while Kearns' has not. Krivsky might have no choice but to try to dangle Adam Dunn, perhaps as a DH to an AL team, to get what he needs."

How does Scott Olsen for Austin Kearns sound ?

Worst trade ever? Maybe taking it a bit overboard.

But just as bad as Olsen for Gathright sounded.

Don't be an ass. Kearns is on pace to hit 30 homers and drive in 90 runs, and he also plays GG defense.

Gathright couldn't hold Kearns' jock.

I edited my post.

But honestly, it would be a horrible trade.

It wouldn't be a horrible trade, but the Reds would be getting the better end of it.

Kearns is a good, young, inexpensive, power hitting OFer who has the ability to play CFer. It is something you guys need.

We need to trade one of our pitchers for a young outfielder. We have to do it. We need that third guy in the OF to build around, without it we won't compete in 2007 or 08. The Marlins need to make a bold move soon and get that guy. Kearns has an OPS 0f .850 with decent speed and plus defense. He will be cheap. Olsen will be a solid major league pitcher, but we have those guys already. We don't have that in the OF. Everyone is so quick to say how badly we need that third guy in the OF, yet everyone seems to be afraid to trade one of our arms.

Hanley

Uggla

Kearns

Cabs

Jacobs

Willingham

Hermida

Olivo

Exactly.

Olsen is a young, electric, top of the rotation LEFTY starter, who A)shouldnt be dealt B)if ever was, could do much better than Kearnes.

MUCH better then Kearns?

What are you expecting to get bacK? David Wright?

No need for David Wright.

What I am saying is, Olsen should not be available unless for the best of offers, and only if that. And even then, I'd look for other options. He is one of the top LHP prospects and SP prospects overall in MLB. He is exceptionially good, and if need be could get back something more valueable than Kearnes.

I disagree. In Olsen I see a guy with potential to be at best a mid 3 ERA left hander. Adding in his attitude problems that we have been hearing way to much about, I see no reason not to get rid of him now for a very, very solid outfielder(which we badly need).

How much do you think we can get for him a year from now if he gets the label of a "clubhouse cancer" and doesn't improve on his +4.00 ERA ?

He's not a clubhouse cancer. He's young and his emotions got the best of him. His problems with Randy were quickly fixed, as with Cabs. And he has been damn near lights out since his altercation with Girardi.

He is a top of the rotation LHP.

His 4 ERA is misleading, as it was a result of 4 starts. In his other 12 starts, he has:

2.52 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 7.32 K/9. He has also averaged 6.3 IP/start.

Sorry, but those are top of the rotation #'s. All he needed was his head on straight.

You can't just take out 25% of somebodys starts.

I'm not. I said outside of those 4 starts, he has been nearly lights out. So, it's quite likely that those 4 starts are an abberation.

ummmm...he has 16 starts. 4 of 16 is 25 %. 25 % is not an "abberation"

Are you so sure about that? In Olsens 4 bad starts:

12.3 ERA, 2.05 WHIP, 4.03 IP/start

In Olsens 12 good starts:

252 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 6.3 IP/start.

The only stat better in his 4 bad starts is K/9...10.1 in 4 bad starts compared to 7.32 in 12 good starts.

That, IMO, means those 4 starts are indeed an abberation.

The point is that 4 starts for Olsen equals 25 % of all his starts. You can't just add or subtract 25% of a stat and call it an abberation.

I am not subtracting those 4 starts. At least, not anymore than you taking 25% of his starts which were mediocre and ignoring the 75% of his starts in which he was exceptional.

In other words, you are saying the minority of his starts(4) are more indictive of how good Olsen really is than the majority of his starts(12).

That doesnt make any sense.

And, still, Kearnes straight up for Olsen is a horrible trade for us.
