2006 MLB Trading Deadline

Olney's blog today stated that talks had cooled.

Unless we coudl work out a deal for Peavy (and Peavy is not going anywhere) I wouldn't move him. His defense is easily the best in the AL, and his bat has been productive.

Seems to me like a case of someone piecing two and two together (Padres need a 3B...Sox need pitching) and running with it.

Trade would weaken us in too many ways. Things like this are why I have such a love/hate relationship with this time of year.

it would be a really bad move for the sox...Lowell is doing a good job and who the hell would replace him? i dont wanna see Choi over there at 1st base.

the only move the sox should be intrested in is trading Pena for a SP.

Talk about a house cleaning.

The lastest trade rumor concerning Phillies outfielder Bobby Abreu now involves a whole lot more. A New York Post story today has Abreu, Pat Burrell, David Bell and Tom Gordon going to the New York Yankees for - get this - Alex Rodriguez, Melky Cabrera and a player to be named.

According to the Post, Rodriguez laughed when he heard the rumor.

"It doesn't make any difference," Rodriguez said of the rumor. "I would veto it."

Like Abreu, Rodriguez has a no-trade clause in his contract that he would have to waive if he was to be moved.

Needless to say, the fantasy league-like rumor is getting lots of airtime on sports-talk radio and will be a hot topic when the Phillies play the Braves tonight at Citizens Bank Park.

Imagine, though, an infield of A-Rod at third, Rollins at short, Chase Utley at second and Ryan Howard at first.

The question is, why would the Yankees do it?

If I'm the Yankees, I'd consider trading ARod, but they can do a whole lot better than that Phillie package.

Choi's in AAA.

I would NOT trade Lowell. Foulke, yes.

Lowell is playing great for us; why mess up the chemistry?

As much as I like Brandon Moss down at Portland, I look for him to be moved in a deal. Harris could be packaged as well, since he's been DFA'd...

Even if that hypothetical deal happened, I think the Sox would try Pena (yikes) at first then call up Choi who isn't doing alot of damage in AAA.

BTW, Lowell is out of the line-up tonight with a stomach ailment, nothing more.

The Rangers are targeting Diamondbacks left fielder Luis Gonzalez, but have yet to make an offer good enough for the D-Backs to ask Gonzalez to waive his no-trade clause, FOXSports.com has learned.

Gonzalez, 38, would fit for the Rangers as a left-handed hitting outfielder and DH. The Rangers continue to look for pitching, but apparently are confident that the pending returns of right-handers Adam Eaton and Kameron Loe from injuries will bolster their staff.

The Rangers entered Saturday a half-game out of first in the AL West while the Diamondbacks were a game back in the NL West. But Gonzalez, who played for Rangers manager Buck Showalter in Arizona, might be ready to leave one contender for another, knowing the Diamondbacks are unlikely to exercise his $10 million option for 2007.

Gonzalez was infuriated several weeks back when Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick linked him to steroid rumors. He was rankled again Thursday when the team benched him for rookie Carlos Quentin, who proceeded to hit a home run in his major-league debut.

Before waiving his no-trade clause, Gonzalez likely would want to know more from the Rangers about his role this season and beyond. He could ask for a one-year extension of his contract at a salary lower than his option number.

Lowell on the block?

Jul 20 - San Diego is in conversations with the Red Sox over 3B Mike Lowell, reports ESPN's Buster Olney.

In the deal, Lowell would go to the Padres and the Red Sox would likely then move Kevin Youkilis from first to third and put somebody like Hee-seop Choi at first.

The Padres released 3B Vinny Castilla on Wednesday, so they're desperate.

The Red Sox will be looking for pitching in return.

I guess the Red Sox aren't sold on Lowell's revival and want to sell while they still can get value in return???

Otherwise it makes no sense for the Red Sox, or the Padres, since Lowell will struggle in Petco.

Still, I think the Sox are thinking, "hey, we're playing with the house's money here anyway, why not try to recoup some of what we gave up for Beckett before it's too late?"

Lowel just hit his 13 HR batting .299 with 51 RBI's

Meh......Gonzalez is past his prime and the Rangers need pitching.

The Red Sox scouted Phillies pitcher Cory Lidle's performance today in hopes of possibly acquiring the right handed pitcher.

Today, Lidle pitched eight innings, giving up two runs on four hits and struck out eight in defeating the Diamondbacks, 5-2.

Scouts from the Blue Jays and Yankees attended today's game in Philadelphia. Lidle is 8-7 with an ERA of 4.74.

Lidle could be a good addition to the Sox. Just give him decent backing. I saw Lidle pitch quite a bit for the Rays and knew he had potential...with no support, his stats were misleading.

The Yankees and Phillies were reportedly talking late into Friday night about a Bobby Abreu deal that might also include Jon Lieber or Cory Lidle. ESPN.com's Jayson Stark has said that the Yankees could get a discount by taking the full contracts of both Abreu and Lieber, as there's been little interest in both players elsewhere. The Star-Ledger reports that the Phillies are now discussing second-tier Yankees prospects instead of Philip Hughes and Jose Tabata.

The Phillies would give up Abreu and Lieber or Lidle for second tier prospects?

I know they need payroll relief but that's ridiculous if true.

Kansas City, Mo. // The Orioles could have a tough decision on their hands in the coming weeks regarding the future of Jeff Conine , who signed a one-year, $1.7 million deal in December with an option for a second season.

The option vests if Conine reaches 450 plate appearances and the 40-year-old is on pace to eclipse that mark with 320 plate appearances with 61 games remaining. Conine would earn $2 million next season if the option vests, a high price for a player who will turn 41 next June and is obviously not in the club's long-term plans.

Still, Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo said that the option has no bearing on his decisions and he'll continue to play Conine, who has been one of his team's hottest hitters over the past month, raising his average 34 points since June 22.

"I've been told not to let any of that stuff enter in my decision, so it won't," Perlozzo said. "I am out here to put the best team out on the field to win. I don't think that [other stuff] matters."

There's still a decent chance that the Orioles could trade Conine before Monday's non-waiver deadline, making his contract a non-issue. The St. Louis Cardinals, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners are among the teams that are interested in Conine, who would likely bring a mid-level prospect in return.

You haven't seen Wayne Krivsky's Reds in many trade rumors this weekend. That's not to say the Reds aren't trying to make moves. They have one offer out on a player that would really signal a new era in Cincy, though it's unlikely to happen.

The name? Craig Wilson. At least three teams are in on him right now, but once again, the Pirates are asking for the moon. The Reds willingness to get in on a rental player signals that they're looking to win now, whether it's to catch the Cards or to hang on to the wild card. The team is now willing to take on some salary if that's what's needed, a big change from the old ownership. Wilson is hardly the only name that the Reds have looked into, although their focus is still on pitching.
