2006 MLB Trading Deadline

Olsen>>>Brandon Moss

I think Beinfest knows Theo's cell number and vice-versa ;)

Sure he does. But we could get a ton more for Olsen than Moss. And Olsen should never be traded anyway.

Moss is, after all, batting .255 with a .732 OPS @ AA and K'ing once ever 5 ab's, and has struck out twice as much as he has walked.

Ungs for Moss would be a good deal.

Mariners have strong interest in Soriano

Ken Rosenthal / FOXSports.com

The Mariners see an opportunity. Few teams can afford to rent Nationals left fielder Alfonso Soriano, a potential free agent, for the final two months of the season. And the Angels, the team for whom Soriano represents perhaps the best fit, seem unwilling to part with the talent necessary to complete a blockbuster trade.

By obtaining Soriano, who has more than $3 million left on his contract, the Mariners could A) ensure that he doesn't go to the Angels; B) boost their offense, the fifth-worst in the American League and C) obtain a player who could prove a difference-maker in the A.L. West race, helping improve the job security of general manager Bill Bavasi.

The Mariners, Yankees and Tigers are the teams with the most significant interest in Soriano, major-league sources tell FOXSports.com. The Cardinals are another possible suitor, and the Angels could become a more serious player if owner Arte Moreno orders GM Bill Stoneman to improve his trade offers.

Alfonso Soriano of Washington, Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell and David Dellucci of Philadelphia, Luis Gonzalez of Arizona and Jeff Conine of Florida are a few of the names that might be available in a trade.

Regarding a possible Tigers-Nats deal for Soriano -

Link

Washington officials are requesting a package that includes Sanchez, rising prospect Jair Jurrjens (3-2, 2.78 at Double-A Erie) and a position player, likely outfielder Brent Clevlen, a former second-round pick.

Pretty lofty price for a free-swinging right hander. Rather normal at the plate if you look past his SB and HR numbers.

.930 OPS is pretty good.

I don't understand where the Tigers fit in with him though. Their weakest spot in the line-up is 3B, you could move Guillen over to play 3B....but can Polanco play SS to make room for Soriano at 2B? You aren't going to sit any of your outfielders and he has a steep price tag for a rental player.

  • Author

Yeah, the .930 OPS isn't bad, it's a product of a large slugging percentage due to his HR numbers. That's fine with me, but he is still a free swinger that is known to K quite a bit. He would be a rental player, and they would more than likely play him in the OF. If not they could move use Polanco as a utility type player (he's played 3B in his career).

That price is too high though. They would have to lower it a little bit. One positive would be if he were to leave at the end of the season the team would get some supplemental picks.

So they would rotate Thames and Maggs?

I don't think you'd like that Mark.

I don't know what Soriano's feeling on this would be, but he would probably assume the role of Craig Monroe (who DH's quite a bit). But yeah, there would be some rotation of Maggs/Thames/Soriano.

Thames could DH and Soriano could play LF. It doesn't matter. Both are similar in the field.

Just look at the Tigers lineup with Soriano in it:

Granderson CF

Polanco 2B

Pudge C

Maggs RF

Soriano DH/LF

Thames LF/DH

Guillen SS

Shelton 1B

Inge 3B

Pretty good. I'm still not holding my breath though.

Considering this had to be Theo's worst deal ever, he damn well better geta good package for Wily Mo...

Dave Van Horn spoke about this in today's game:

Greg MADDUX • Starting Pitcher • Chicago Cubs

Jul. 19, 2006 - 2:37 pm et

A scoring change from a May 24 game against the Marlins has taken five earned runs away from Greg Maddux's record, lowering his ERA from 4.99 to 4.60.

Scorer Ron Jernick said he made the change after the Cubs appealed the May 24 ruling to MLB. The reversal also takes a hit away from Hanley Ramirez and gives Ronny Cedeno an error.

A little garnish never hurts. ;) Too bad Hanley had to pay for it.

A couple more tasty Tejada nuggets: The Reds kicked the tires on the superstar shortstop, but a deal couldn't be completed without including stud pitcher Homer Bailey. In my opinion, if the Reds are really going for the gold this year, they should've pulled the trigger.

This from mlbtraderumors.com

that would have been huge for the Reds to pull off that deal. Homer Bailey is really something special though so I am not at all surprised why he is still around.

well to whoever is looking for a 3rd baseman down the strectch two just became available with Castilla being released and Hillenbrand being DFA'd

Lowell on the block?

Jul 20 - San Diego is in conversations with the Red Sox over 3B Mike Lowell, reports ESPN's Buster Olney.

In the deal, Lowell would go to the Padres and the Red Sox would likely then move Kevin Youkilis from first to third and put somebody like Hee-seop Choi at first.

The Padres released 3B Vinny Castilla on Wednesday, so they're desperate.

The Red Sox will be looking for pitching in return.

I guess the Red Sox aren't sold on Lowell's revival and want to sell while they still can get value in return???

Otherwise it makes no sense for the Red Sox, or the Padres, since Lowell will struggle in Petco.

Still, I think the Sox are thinking, "hey, we're playing with the house's money here anyway, why not try to recoup some of what we gave up for Beckett before it's too late?"
