July 18, 200620 yr I don't think Delgado adds anything to this team. The big issue is CF and C. Though Olivo is sound, the days that Treanor plays, Reggie Abercrombie REALLY can't be left in, as the bottom 3rd of the lineup turns into a black hole. Get a legitimate hitter for CF, and that clears up.
July 18, 200620 yr I think overall the Marlins got the better end of the deal. Delgado is contributing to their lineup and Jacobs is doing great here. In a few years, though, Jacobs will be much better than Carlos, plus his salary is much lower. That trade worked out better for us than I would have expected, though.

July 18, 200620 yr Cabrera slugged .561 last year and is slugging .549 this year. His homers are slightly down but his doubles are up. Last year he had an extra base hit every 7.9 AB... this year he has an extra base hit every 7.7 AB (slight improvement). Last year he had an extra base hit every 8.7 PA... this year he has an extra base hit every 9.0 PA (slight decline). I don't get all the talk about how his powers numbers are down.

If 2 out of the 3 stats you provide indicate a decline, no matter how slight, the numbers are down. Plus, if memeory serves, he had more homeruns at the break last year than this year. Delgado does provide protection, and anyone begging to differ needs only look at the drastic improvement both Wright and Beltran have had with him in the lineup. Over the next three years would I rather have Jakey than Delgado? Of course, but that doesn't mean that this year, the trade's a wash...

If Cabrera had one more HR this year his SLG would be the same as last year. The decline equivalent to one homerun in 3.5 months on the season is nothing to be concerned about, in my opinion.
July 18, 200620 yr my only gripe with jacobs is his defense , very limited range and doesnt have good hands , hopefully more work with hill will help some . either way more bang for the buck wih jacobs than delgado Jacobs is no D Lee but Delgado was a huge defensive liability. Id like to add one more downside to Delgado. He is not a leader, never will be. He gets his stats, deposits the $ and keeps on smiling. Jacobs may one day grow to be a team leader.

Now that's crazy talk. Ask anyone, Delgado and Pedro are the leaders of the Mets. Even here Delgado led vocally, and led by example. If not for him, people probably would have lynched Cabrera in August. Now, as for Jacobs turning into a leader...that'd be great, I hope it happens, but as long as Dontrelle's here, this is his team. The one guy I could see stepping up is Hanley, he just has too much fun to not become more vocal.
July 18, 200620 yr The team is only D-Trains by default because Big Tex is gone. Not knocking D-Train in anyway, but even after last years Cy Young campaign(D-Train is the rightful Cy Young...he got robbed), the captain and guy the team looked to for leadership would still be Big Tex if he was not traded. D-Train is still not the big dog in the yard completely, he shares that spot with Cabs. Anyone could step in at any time to be that guy, along with the Willis and Miguel.

I love Beckett more than anyone, and Beckett wasn't the leader. He never wanted to be the leader, or the desire to run the pitching staff. He's more than happy to defer to veterans like Leiter last year and Schilling this year. There's a difference between being the best and being the leader. Beckett was the former, but not the latter.
July 18, 200620 yr I disagree, not to your point, but Big Tex lead by example wether he intended to or not, and he was the guy the players wanted out there with the game on the line...wether he wanted that responsibility or not. He was the first one out of the dugout to congratulate the young pitchers...good game or not. Just because he didnt sew a C on his chest...does not mean thats not how the rest of the clubhouse viewed him. Not arguing with you, just giving you my point of view for why I think that way.(and I am still in denial that he is gone...so hard to stomach, even with Hanley and Anibal).
July 18, 200620 yr FYI: Jacobs only ranks 8th among regular NL 1Bmen in OPS, behind Pujols, Lamb, Garciaparra, Nick "the Stick" Johnson, Ryan Howard, Helton, and Scott Freakin' Hatteberg. Still, he is better than Delgado and is improving.
July 18, 200620 yr To add to my thought above, it becomes more and more obvious everyday that missing most from the Marlins lineup is someone who could actually provide Cabrera some protection. As much as I'd like to go get "a" Chris Denorfia type to grow with rest of the rookies, it's been obvious (at least to me) that's what's needed most is someone who strikes fear in the hearts of opposing pitchers and whose bat is legendary enough to force teams to pitch to Miggy. I dont think we can easily get someone like that without a big time FA signing in the offseason though. Those type of Big time bats you are talking of are next to impossible to get. Except the one we traded away last year.

July 18, 200620 yr It was a good trade for both sides, Beltran would not be having the year he is without Delgado in the lineup, and Jakey is flat out raking at the moment. They got what they wanted, we got what we wanted, everybody is happy. Now in a year or so it may not be the case..... Very well put, I don't think the Mets would be as good without Delgado in the clubhouse. And he carried them on their back for a stretch when Beltran was hurt and Wright was slumping. Also, Delgado has been playing through a ribcage injury which has caused his numbers to skew. And the Marlins got a decent looking 1st baseman for the future. Both sides should be pretty happy with the trade.
