Miami Vice

Featured Replies

thanks for posting that passion.

I could be wrong but I disagree slightly with the writer.

I do think the show and the movie will share more than just the name, Miami Vice. The movie is directed by Mann, set in Miami and deals with the same undercover narcotics unit so there will be similarities.

But maybe im just hoping.

FWIW, Paul and Young Ron said that the only thing the movie and the TV show shared was the title and character names.

I cant go see Vice till Monday (too much work) but if anyone goes and sees it be sure to tell us what you think.

Thanks.

AICN:

Highly recommended for Michael Mann fans, cop and action film buffs, and anyone looking for a dark alternative to all the mainstream fare that comes with Summertime at the Box Office. Not recommended for old school fans of the show who are really hoping for a stream of TV show references, in jokes or riffs about the clothing.

The more I think about it, the more I thank God that Michael Mann went with the grown up look of Miami now than try and recreate the look of 1984 Vice (the pastel colors and such in a modern setting that you see so many Movies based off TV shows try to pull off). The city as we knew it back in 1984-89 is long since gone and I'm really excited to see how the world of Miami Vice looks in our modern world. :D

You are pretty talented to already review a movie not yet released, and base your opinion on a smattering of clips played along with catchy music over the span of 2-3 minutes and know what movies it is like and that it is bad.

You need to write a book or have a daily newspaper column, a talent like this doesn't need to be buried in the depths of this message board.

What is the name of that "catchy music"?

I met a guy at work that went to the Premiere in Miami...he said it was one of the best movies he has ever seen. It's nothing like the show, and is just great.

I'm definitely going to see it.

Its tomato-meter is down to 48% and falling fast.

I hate to judge from reviews and general WOM, but it appears it really IS just a standard cop thriller.

I'll pass.

The review in my hometown paper touted it as the movie of the summer.

Basically what I've come away with from what I've read is that if you like Mann, gritty storylines, two bad ass protagonists, and some ridiculously awesome shoot out scenes, you'll like this.

It's going to be a popcorn flick. I'm a blind fan boy for Mann so I'm going to this regardless but I definitely expect to enjoy this.

I'll have to wait until Monday though as I'll be out of town through Saturday and working Sunday.

Yeah Im definitely in the Blind Fan Boy Michael Mann club (gold card member).

That combined with what Ive heard about it is all but assuring the fact that I will be glued at the theater on Monday.

I may even step it up and hit the Muvico in Boca.

eh if it is like it sounds like its going to be then id pass ... i like all the little quirky things about the series and im not for a serious cop thriller

I can't completely get on the Michael Mann bandwagon. I didn't like HEAT nearly as much as most people did. Most of the acting is good & it has an awesome cast, and it tried oh-so-hard to be great, but there's a lot of crappy dialogue. And that much exposition absolutely KILLS a movie. Pacino vs DeNiro could've been great but it wound up nothing but a mediocre cops & robbers movie. That big meeting between them at the cafe has all the intensity of a game of checkers. Unnecessarily long also.

So I'll reserve judgement on this...

Hmmmmm.....

Crocket and Tubbs busting in on an illegal checkers ring in little Havana.......*note to self for Miami Vice II*

I'm not getting on your case but just speaking out on something that slightly bothers me. There is so much more to Mann then just Heat which people automatically associate his entrie career with.

Collateral

The Insider

The Last of the Mohicans

All of those are extremely underrated films.

Insider... Yes, very underrated.

I have no idea how the other two can be considered underrated. They're not exactly hidden treasures.

The Last of the Mohicans was incredibly disrespected as far as the Academy goes. One of the best musical scores ever and it's just a movie that doesn't get talked about in the war or drama genres. It's a better film than The Crying Game and Howards End and Mann deserved a directorial nomination for the film. '92 was such a lame year because of the parity in the awards by just 4 or 5 films.

A movie doesn't have to be 'hidden' to be underrated.

True, can't disagree with anything said there but Mohicans is held highly as least from the people I know, as a war genre movie.

The general consensus I get is, it has the Patriot's amazing gore, but unlike the latter, is an excellent movie regardless.

It also has one of my favorite bloopers ever, when he's running to save her from jumping and he grabs hold of the rock, and the "rock" begins to shake like a piece of cloth. It never gets old.

I friggin LOVE Last of the Mohicans. I could watch that movie like 20 times in a row.

And ya, the musical score IS catchy and very appropriate.

I've never seen any of this series, and despite the tomato rating I still think I'm going to like the movie just based on what the reviews have actually said. I don't need this to remind me of the series. This is one of those films where most of the critics are probably approaching this with a different framework than I am, since they probably were all watching the show when it was on.

I'm checking it out tonight.

It appears that most of the negative reviews are whining about it not being like the TV show. I, for one, think that's a good thing. The show is ridiculous and cheesy. It's just all nostalgia-factor that's making people wax poetic about it, IMO.

Then why the hell is it called Miami Vice?

Couldn't they have named it...oh I don't know...ANYTHING ELSE?

I might see it this weekend though, my girlfriend now wants to go.

I disagree 100% about the show being ridiculous and cheesy (at least the first 2 years anyway).

I do agree that the cheese factor would be extremely high if they made the movie just like the show (set in the 80's, pastels etc).

But like another poster mentioned, if its nothing like the show at all, why not name it anything but Miami Vice. :thumbup

My thoughts on the film:

So, I saw this last night. Went with two other people, and we all came out thinking pretty much the same thing--it was okay.

The good:

-The movie certainly looked nice.

-The two action scenes were well done, especially the trailer scene.

-There's also the appeal of watching the movie, and saying "Hey! I know where that is!" over and over again.

The bad:

-It felt like over half of the movie was taken outside of Miami to places like Haiti, Havana, Geneva, and I forget where else. For a film called Miami Vice, Miami didn't have much of a role in this one after the first 15 minutes. It felt more like an international-type thriller. I think, if done right, the city could have been used to lend some more atmosphere to this movie, but instead it felt kind of homeless.

-It's possible that Jamie Foxx played less of a role in this move than Miami did. He really didn't even need to be there. His character was almost a complete nothing. You can imagine that for a movie that's supposedly about two men in Miami, when one of the men and Miami are almost completely indisposable, then there's something flawed about that movie. Colin Farrell's story wasn't nearly interesting enough to make up for any of this.

-This movie and all the characters in it were completely humorless. Colin Farrell and his lady friend seemingly built a relationship upon their shared depression. Same with Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Everyone was SO serious. Everyone. It was kind of hard to tell why any of them like any other of them. It was like cracking a smile would be considered uncool. As such, all the characters seem kind of inhuman, and it's kind of hard to identify with any of them.

-If you are able to follow just what the heck is going on during the first hour of the film, you are either a narc, or you are involved in the trafficking of drugs. I was able to get the gist of it, but anything beyond the gist was completely out of reach. There was so much jargon and so many dropped and unintelligible lines that it was just impossible to sort out why they were doing what.

-There wasn't enough action. Or really, there wasn't enough story to make up for the lack of action. I don't need sh*t blowing up every 5 minutes. But if there's not enough story to hang your movie on, then you need to start blowing sh*t up. And this movie needed to blow sh*t up. The best scenes, easily, were the two actions scenes. A lot of what fell in between felt just kind of aimless.

Honestly, there was more bad than good in this film, but I still enjoyed it on some level. But I don't really think I can recommend it. If you were looking forward to this, you'll probably enjoy it just enough to make it worth your while. If you were iffy on it, though, I'd pass.
