Miami Vice

I don't need sh*t blowing up every 5 minutes. But if there's not enough story to hang your movie on, then you need to start blowing sh*t up. And this movie needed to blow sh*t up.

:lol nice.

I plan to see it for nothing more than a couple of hours of entertainment.

My thoughts on the film:

So, I saw this last night. Went with two other people, and we all came out thinking pretty much the same thing--it was okay.

The good:

-The movie certainly looked nice.

-The two action scenes were well done, especially the trailer scene.

-There's also the appeal of watching the movie, and saying "Hey! I know where that is!" over and over again.

The bad:

-It felt like over half of the movie was taken outside of Miami to places like Haiti, Havana, Geneva, and I forget where else. For a film called Miami Vice, Miami didn't have much of a role in this one after the first 15 minutes. It felt more like an international-type thriller. I think, if done right, the city could have been used to lend some more atmosphere to this movie, but instead it felt kind of homeless.

-It's possible that Jamie Foxx played less of a role in this move than Miami did. He really didn't even need to be there. His character was almost a complete nothing. You can imagine that for a movie that's supposedly about two men in Miami, when one of the men and Miami are almost completely indisposable, then there's something flawed about that movie. Colin Farrell's story wasn't nearly interesting enough to make up for any of this.

-This movie and all the characters in it were completely humorless. Colin Farrell and his lady friend seemingly built a relationship upon their shared depression. Same with Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Everyone was SO serious. Everyone. It was kind of hard to tell why any of them like any other of them. It was like cracking a smile would be considered uncool. As such, all the characters seem kind of inhuman, and it's kind of hard to identify with any of them.

-If you are able to follow just what the heck is going on during the first hour of the film, you are either a narc, or you are involved in the trafficking of drugs. I was able to get the gist of it, but anything beyond the gist was completely out of reach. There was so much jargon and so many dropped and unintelligible lines that it was just impossible to sort out why they were doing what.

-There wasn't enough action. Or really, there wasn't enough story to make up for the lack of action. I don't need sh*t blowing up every 5 minutes. But if there's not enough story to hang your movie on, then you need to start blowing sh*t up. And this movie needed to blow sh*t up. The best scenes, easily, were the two actions scenes. A lot of what fell in between felt just kind of aimless.

Honestly, there was more bad than good in this film, but I still enjoyed it on some level. But I don't really think I can recommend it. If you were looking forward to this, you'll probably enjoy it just enough to make it worth your while. If you were iffy on it, though, I'd pass.

I couldn't agree anymore. It's like you wrote what I thought.

I agree with everyone who says that the first hour of the movie was a compete waste..... except for a minor character mentioning watching Marlins highlights. Also, anyone else find Colin Farrell distracting because 1. he looked like Mike Piazza, during his Dodger-years and 2. his accent was terrible.

For a very good review of this movie please see Mabdul's review above.

I just have a few minor things to add after finally getting to see it today.

The movie started off on a down note for me even before it began.

The previews were so LOUD that when Vice started, I could hardly pick up any of the dialogue. Really annoying.

I did like the fact that Vice started with no credits and Mann didnt spell everything out for the audience (although he did play this to a fault eventually) because he doesnt ever really let us in.

I completely agree that the first half hour of the movie is the worst part. I couldnt understand a word Colin Ferell said until about an hour in.

One major strength of the movie? The film score. Classic Michael Mann/Vice stuff. The dark, eerie synths had me nodding my head, "yeah".

The only thing I disagree with Mabdul's excellent review is the absence of Jamie Foxx's, Ricardo Tubbs. I think Tubbs' roll is equal to everyone else's. Fox clearly feels more comfortable in the roll than Ferell. He eventually comes around and seems to settle in to the role of Crocket.

Here's the thing, Colin Ferrel looks like he's playing the roll of current rock goon, Scott Stapp (creed). In the first half hour of the movie its as if he is surrounded by actors and he is trying to learn as he goes.

Highlights of the movie are the classic Michael Mann shots with the fast cars, the fast boats and the dark score. The lead bad guy (who's name escapes me) is very sinister and really nails the part.

The last 4 minutes of the movie was worth the $8 alone as Crocket's love tragedy unfolds and he returns to the hospital to meet with Tubbs' injured detective/girlfriend and the classic Vice score (in this particular scene its Mogwai's "Auto Rock" I believe) plays in the backround as it cuts to the blue Miami Vice title on the screen.

I definitely will watch it again on DVD but I left feeling that it had the potential to be so much more.

Pathetic. I left in the middle of it, I couldn't take it anymore. I know it supposedly gets better at the end but there is nothing they possibly could have shown me to make up for that hour of life and money I wasted. (everyone I went with agreed)

I mean I wasn't looking for some epic movie here, just a fun two hours of a cool cop thriller but my god. The plot was not only boring but SO played out (might as well go watch Bad Boys 2, at least that had some comedy in it). Also, I felt like there was way too much talking going on. Some movies can pull that off but not when the dialogue nor the acting is maybe halfway decent. I was laughing at the sex scenes because they were just thrown in there almost out of context just for the sake of putting sex in the movie. I can honestly say the only part I admit I enjoyed was "umm, do you wanna f*** my partner or do you wanna do business?". Hahah.

So yeah, I was really disappointed with a movie that I didn't even have high expectations for. Too bad but at least I enjoyed the previews! This fall is gonna be crazy for movies, I can't wait.

Saw it a couple of nights ago, I thought it was just Okay. Not enough action nor story line. With what i saw from the trailers i was expecting A brukheimer (sp?) movie instead i got a couple of lame shootouts. I thought they used way too many charachters and the love scenes are just too drawn out. I felt like i was watching a Michael Mann fetish porn.I mean i just saw a sex scene i dont need to see another one with the same people 5 minutes later. The story just seems to take a hour long hiatus for some love scenes and then all the sudden the movie is over. I think this would have been great had it been a HBO original series or something to that nature but 2 1/2 hours was way too long. Meh

You are pretty talented to already review a movie not yet released, and base your opinion on a smattering of clips played along with catchy music over the span of 2-3 minutes and know what movies it is like and that it is bad.

You need to write a book or have a daily newspaper column, a talent like this doesn't need to be buried in the depths of this message board.

The above statement is totally and 100% true.

Thanks for the follow up, troll.

This movie could be the worst of all time and it still doesn't change what I said or how ridiculous it is to know what movie(s) a film is like, whether it is good, etc.

Is it anymore to be trolling than to actually call trolling? I think not.

That being said, I merely see some things I had said earlier reiterated in some reviews. "Typical cop movie," "mindless" (not sure I actually said that one :lol ) and "bad boys 3" among others. Not hating, just stating.

BASED on the trailer, I said it looked like garbage and I didn't want to see it. And you critiqued my critique. I mean, if we all had the same opinions life would be pretty dull. I just said it doesn't do it for me and all the Mann spoogers felt I was insulting them for liking it (btw I really thought Last of the Mohicans was the weakest of his flicks; it was aiight but for my money nothing beats Heat and Collateral); which wasn't the case.

I'm just of the opinion it's stupid to judge an entire movie as if you know it by a quick trailer. For me personally it makes no sense.

And when your reputation on the board is being pretty much 90% 'hating' on things it's harder for me to not get irritated/annoyed when it's so prevelant in everything you post in.

I honestly don't care if you don't see the movie, don't like it, etc but I'll never agree with someone who cans a movie based on 2-3 minutes of fast paced clips.

Not even if the person is right? YOU'RE CRAZY!

Man, I just said it didn't look good. That's just my experience. Doesn't mean it doesn't have any merit whatsoever. Damn.

90% a bit high. I'd go between 60-70. I keep my hating within the hate limit.

How old are you?

The "I told you so" crap you pulled was extremely childish.

Does it really matter?

So's the following your mentor and hounding his steps stuff you're currently pulling. Are you Passion's friend, or Passion himself? You're such a yes-man I don't know the difference between the two of you.

That being said, I never said those words. You did.

Funny you say that, because I can not stand Passion. He is a Red Sox fan who is a huge fan of Television and Movies. I hate him as much as I hate basket weaving.

I think this thread has reached its point of no return.

This thread was ruined a while ago when Buckeye gave the thumbs down to a movie that had yet to be released.

No, I believe the childish arguement that ensued from all parties, was what ruined this thread.

I saw Vice, good movie. Wasn't as good as some of Mann's previous work, but was really worth the 7 bucks.

I also have to give it up to Mann for pulling this movie out, when apparently Farrell's partying was really hurting production(I read somewhere he gained 25lbs before this movie, due to all this partying.)

I was watching "Collateral" on HBO and I couldnt help but notice that it has more in common with Miami Vice than "Miami Vice" the movie does.

I hope that makes sense but maybe those who have seen both will know what Im talking about.

For anyone who hasnt seen Collateral I highly recommend it.
