July 20, 200620 yr I think we will all agree that the guy has been phenomenal, and he's been no surprise either. He is good, and now he is showing it. However, his last few outings have shown that he needs to work on his control. In his last 5 starts he has allowed more than 4 walks in 4 of them; and even though he is 3-1 in that stretch, the high pitch counts do prevent him from going deeper into games. As a rookie it's obviously something that will affect any player, but I can't imagine how good we will be once he starts having more control of his pitches.

July 20, 200620 yr Like you said, control is a common problem for rookies. The problem should become less of a problem in each game he starts. This guy is going to be great.

According to reports I read during the offseason, a number of Marlins scouts ranked him as our top pitching prospect (others saying Scott Olsen was the top prospect, still others Anibal).

Because he is tall and weighs 250+ lbs? I think he can be better than Penny, even though i didn't see him when he started, but he never had numbers remotely similar to those JJ is putting up. Time will tell i guess.
July 20, 200620 yr Josh Johnson doesn't throw as hard as Penny and doesn't really have a curveball. I think Josh Johnson compares better to a John Lackey with a better slider but doesn't have the same curve that Lackey has.
July 20, 200620 yr If JJ is able to hone his changeup and slider (maybe even add a quality curveball to his repetoire) and learn to spot his fastball with good consistency, he will be pretty formidable. Big leaguers are having a pretty hard time hitting his stuff as it is. He is still 22-years-old and the potential for further improvement is there.

Penny always seemed like much more of a thrower than a pitcher.
