July 29, 200619 yr I was just reading the Braves board and found out a few minutes ago. Braves trade Betemit Infielder is sent to Dodgers for reliever Danys Baez and infielder Willy Aybar. BREAKING NEWS http://www.ajc.com/braves/content/sports/braves/index.html
July 29, 200619 yr damn... if you flashback a year ago, Baez was probably the most sought out after closer.
July 29, 200619 yr Braves must really have a good feeling about their chances.... I have other plans.... :mischief
July 29, 200619 yr Aybar = young Betemit (with more OBP, less power) Baez = meh, will be a FA at the end of the year, we'll see if the Braves resign him or let him go for prospects. Who closes for the Braves? Wickman or Baez?
July 29, 200619 yr Who closes for the Braves? Wickman or Baez? I'd have to say Wickman, Baez lost his closer role in LA.
July 29, 200619 yr Guess the Braves were getting tired of hearing the age old... is it Betimeat or Betimitt?
July 29, 200619 yr Personally, I am glad that Betemit is no longer on the Braves. I think he has more potential than Willy Aybar, though Aybar is no slouch. Contrary to what was previously believed, Betemit is actually 24, not 26. He fudged his age so he could sign with the Braves when he was 14. We'll see how much the addition of Baez helps the Braves bullpen. I don't think it will help too much.
July 29, 200619 yr It looks like Baez may make his Braves debut today if he is there and ready. The Mets are pounding the Braves right now, up 10-3 in the 6th.
July 29, 200619 yr Guess the Braves were getting tired of hearing the age old... is it Betimeat or Betimitt? Meat.
July 30, 200619 yr Aybar = young Betemit (with more OBP, less power) Baez = meh, will be a FA at the end of the year, we'll see if the Braves resign him or let him go for prospects. Who closes for the Braves? Wickman or Baez? Wickman has a liftime 90+ save percentage, Baez lost his closer role AFTER Gagne got hurt. You decide :thumbup
July 30, 200619 yr The Atlanta Braves on Sunday placed Chipper Jones on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique that he aggravated on a swing in the fifth inning of Friday's series opener with the New York Mets. Jones first sustained the injury on July 21 and had missed four of the previous five games heading into the Mets series. The switch-hitter is batting .315 with 15 homers and 59 RBI in 81 games. He caught fire in July, batting .500 (30-for-60) with seven homers and 20 RBI. After his team experienced a resurgent July, Braves general manager John Schuerholz acquired closer Bob Wickman from the Cleveland Indians on July 21 and reliever Danys Baez and infielder Willie Aybar from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday to gear up for the wild card chase. Atlanta (48-55) stands 6? games behind the Cincinnati Reds in the race for the National League's final playoff berth. But to get the Los Angeles duo, Schuerholz had to part with Jones' primary backup, Wilson Betemit. The club now will have to rely on Aybar, who hit .250 with three homers in just 122 at-bats for the Dodgers this season. In related moves Sunday, the Braves transferred outfielder Brian Jordan to the 60-day disabled list and designated pitcher Jorge Sosa for assignment. Jordan has been sidelined since June 17 with a bruised right clavicle. He is batting just .214 with three homers and 10 RBI in 40 games this season. Sosa is 3-10 with a 5.46 ERA and three saves in 26 games -- 13 of them starts -- on the campaign. espn.com Can't say I'm going to shed a tear for Atlanta.
July 30, 200619 yr The chances the Marlins will finish ahead of the Braves and Phillies improve by the minute.
