September 30, 200322 yr Author I don't like the yankees, did anyone hear say this?if not i heard this:once steinbrenner's sons take over the yankees franchise will be like the 1998 marlins, cuz they are greedy people there is no way they will waste their money so the yankees might be done soon.
September 30, 200322 yr Wagner's not a free agent. He has one more year left on his contract for $9 million. He thinks he's going to be traded though. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-a...ov=ap&type=lgns

I seriously doubt that would happen Willis#1.
October 1, 200322 yr once steinbrenner's sons take over the yankees franchise will be like the 1998 marlins, cuz they are greedy people there is no way they will waste their money so the yankees might be done soon. I just choked on my sandwhich. Are we talking about the same Steinbrenners?
October 3, 200322 yr Yea Billy said he had a feeling he was gonna leave. With the Stros having Dotel who is cheaper and almost the same type of pitcher.
October 7, 200322 yr I heard today in school that billy wagner is a free-agent now anybody kno if this is true, who do you predict will sign him. Wagner still has a year left on his contract. The Astros want to trade him, 'cos they now realize they made a mistake giving him $9 million/year.
October 7, 200322 yr But Wagner is one of hte few closers worth the money he gets paid. And dont be too terribly shocked if that cheapskate Drayton McClane does keep Wagner. He is too much a part of that organization. Between him, Biggio and Bagwell....the fans might revolt if any of them play in a different uniform.
October 8, 200322 yr But Wagner is one of hte few closers worth the money he gets paid. And dont be too terribly shocked if that cheapskate Drayton McClane does keep Wagner. He is too much a part of that organization. Between him, Biggio and Bagwell....the fans might revolt if any of them play in a different uniform. Like Drayton actually cares about the fans. No closer is worth $9 million, not even Mariano Rivera circa 1999. The only reason Drayton is going to keep Wagner is because anybody who takes will make the Astros eat half his salary, which defeats the whole purpose of trading him. Richard Hidalgo has a better chance of getting traded, now that he's gotten back to his 2000 form. Brad Ausmus is definitely gone, unless he takes a $4 million pay cut. The same for Vizcaino unless he takes a $1.5 million pay cut. They've wasted enough money on Ausmus as it is. They can't be stupid enough to continue to give him $5 million/year. Vizcaino is robbing them at $2 million/year, and between Adam Everett and Geoff Blum, the SS position is covered.
October 8, 200322 yr Ausmus is excellent behind the plate. But he sucks with the stick. 5 million is definitely too much for a catcher who cant hit. Vizcaino is valuable, but not at 2 million. I don't see him getting more than a million a year anywhere in baseball, and thats generous. Hidalgo will be traded this offseason and Jason Lane will take the right field job next year. As far as Wagner being worth 9 million...perhaps not, but at the time the contract was signed, there were big money deals being thrown out there. Wagner is the third best closer in baseball, behind only Gagne and Smoltz. He deserves to be paid as an elite closer, whatever that is worth these days. Drayton is a horrible owner, I agree. But if he knows whats best for his investment he will hold onto Wagner. Period.
October 8, 200322 yr Wagner is the third best closer in baseball, behind only Gagne and Smoltz.? He deserves to be paid as an elite closer, whatever that is worth these days. Wagner had a better year this year, but I'd take Dotel over Wagner any day. What's funny about that statement is that the Astros could've had Gagne (and probably Thurston, too) from the Dodgers for Wagner when they foolishly gave him all that money.
October 8, 200322 yr There is something about Wagner I really love. Perhaps its because he has been there so long. I feel more comfortable with Wagner on the mound than Dotel....granted Dotel gets the job done just as much as Wags. Dotel will close someday soon. I just don't know what organization he closes for.
October 10, 200322 yr Wagner is worth whatever an elite closer is worth.... I am not sure what the market for that is right now though? 2 years ago I would of said 9 million would be worth an elite closer...but with the decrease in salaries back to something much more reasonable... i would almost venture to say 5-6 million if that.
October 10, 200322 yr to ME Wagner is a top 5 closer in baseball and at his age he definately has a minimum of 5 years left in his career... but all good things cost $$$
October 10, 200322 yr Wagner will finish his career as the best left handed closer in baseball history. He may finish his career as one of the top 5 closers in baseball history. We will see where his future takes him, but just kno that he will be dominant whereever it is.
October 10, 200322 yr the bad news for us is the main team i can think of that can use a closer next year is... the Phillies
October 10, 200322 yr the bad news for us is the main team i can think of that can use a closer next year is... the Phillies I thought the Phils were going to dump salary this off-season?
October 10, 200322 yr it wouldnt make alot of sense to drop salary BEFORE they even get to the new stadium...
October 11, 200322 yr it wouldnt make alot of sense to drop salary BEFORE they even get to the new stadium... The pretty much spent their "stadium money" last off-season. Thome, Millwood, Burrell, ect.
October 12, 200322 yr the phillies are gunning for urbina for sure. this was supposed to be their postseason year, so i doubt theyre gonna dump it all to rebuild without even touching the postseason. we're obviously losing urbina after this season, but it'd suck to lose a guy like him to a division rival
