WTF is going on?

Who really cares, what's done is done, let's move on to tonights game.

apparently enough people do :thumbup

Just as a general wtf: 3 times leaving a man on third with less than 2 outs. This team has been doing that all year, and that is so frustrating. Situational hitting is nonexistent.

lol, no argument there

except that one game against arizona like 2 days ago.

The one where Amezaga hit a dribbler to first with 2nd and 3rd one out to not score the run? Sorry, he's done that more than once lately so I forget when was what :banghead

Cabrera is the best close and late hitter on the team so if he's not the best on his team he can't be the best in the league.

Close and late is a stat.

In a statistic called "close and late" compiled by STATS Inc., Helms tops the National League with a .400 average (14-for-35). He delivered the decisive two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning Thursday that snapped a tie in the Marlins' 9-6 win over the Nationals at RFK Stadium.

The "close and late" statistic is determined by "at-bats in the seventh inning or later, with the team either ahead by one run, tied, or with the potential tying run at least on deck."

that's a great stat. I wonder who tops the AL.

According the the Marlins website Cabrera has a higher "close and late" OPS than Helms. Helms close and late AVG is very good but there's more to it than AVG. I wonder how he has done with RISP in close and late PAs as he only has 3 RBIs in those situations. Griffey has 20 close and late RBIs so I would assume he has done great in close and late PAs with RISP. Other players have multiple game winning close and late RBIs (I think Griffey and Francour have at least 4 this year, for example) so there's more to it than just AVG when determining who is the best close and late hitter in the league. I'm not knocking Helms' close and late production as I think he has done very well in those situatuions, I'm knocking the homers who say he's the best close and late hitter in the league.

shoot me

considering you are the leader of the second-guessers....

First let me just say that those who are pissed at Girardi for not pinch hitting for Dontrelle have a right to be pissed. It was a very questionable move.

BUT.......

Who had the BEST swings the entire game for the Marlins?

Dontrelle Willis did.

I agree with Ramp though......Based on numbers alone you have to go with Helms in that situation.

But lets not act like Girardi didnt have a REASON to go with Dontrelle. The kid tripled and then almost corked one out to right.

And again, Hanley Ramirez defensive blunders seem to escape the wrath of who gets blamed for a tough loss. Make the f****** plays Hanley. :banghead

Actually Hermida did.

a bloop hit and a groundball up the middle vs a triple to the deepest part of the park and a fly ball that just missed a HR...

yep, hermida definatley had the better swings against lowe. :plain

He had 2 hits and lined out in either his 1st or 2nd at bat.

Willis hit the ball hard 1 time.

Hermida had better swing.

Were you watching Marlins vs Dodgers?

Willis SCORCHED 2 balls (one going for a triple)

jesus

the one that was a fly ball to the track was hit even better than the triple ..I thought it was gone. I was already think of Willis hitting for the cycle..that'd be awesome

Helms hasn't the best clutch hitter, he's been the best clutch slugger. His rate of success has been very poor, but his results have been excellent. Trying to bring in the runner from third to tie the game and possibly get the go-ahead runner on first around doesn't really call for a power bat. We want contact there, someone to get a clear hit, squeeze one through or an out deep that will disrupt the defense from a play at the plate. It is entirely appropriate to rely on a moderate-average low-strikeout player such as Amezaga is than the free-swinging Helms (or Abercrombie, Ross or Borchard).

Don't spew that....Helms is a better hitter than Amezaga and Willis period.

Helms is one of the best PHers in all of baseball. He hit like .350 last year off the bench.

Not really in that situation. He's batting .227 with RISP this year. That's not significantly better than Amezaga. And especially not when you consider the contact issue. We wanted to just knock in the run, not necessarily a HR. Helms strikes out 28% of the time. It is perfectly defensible not to have him pinch-hit. Helms did not offer a slam-dunk option. He barely offers a marginal improvement of our chances to plate that third run.

Amezaga's career.... 415 ABs- 81 Ks.....Ks every 5.12 ABs

That's not good.

:plain

Helms every 3.95

Abercrombie every 3.23

Borchard every 3.27

Ross every 3.76

Id rather see anyone out in CF over Amezaga... doesnt have to be Abercrombie :thumbup

well, i'm glad you aren't our manager then.

Willis looked good at the dish last night, still doesnt mean he should have the bat in his hands late in the game and this coming off an inning where he barely survived just giving up 2 runs

like i said, i wouldn't have complained if he was pinch hit for, but i see the reasoning behind it. he swung the ball well and there's no one in the bullpen you can trust to take over.

you, like always, try to make a mountain out of a molehill.

and you, like always, see that Joe can do no wrong

I just dont get how if everyone knows the manager is about to do something wrong, how the manager in his few disciples dont see it. Oh well, I hope he has fun in Wrigley next year

actually, didn't i start a thread a couple days ago about something girardi should change? nice try though.

what he did isn't wrong just because you disagree with it. sorry to inform you, ramp, but just because you have 30,000 posts doesn't make you the voice of right or wrong.

do i agree what he did? honestly, if i was manager i probably would have pinch hit helms for willis...but, i see why girardi stuck with him. it wasn't an easy decision to make.

um... when did i say i was the voice?... im just voicing my opinion and alot happen to agree with me

Yeah, Amezaga grounded out in the 7th but all of this bluster you created just distracts from the fact Hanley Ramirez hurt us much more last night than Alfredo did. Lets break it down:

Major at bats/plays by Hanley Ramirez that contributed to the Marlins loss:

1) Top 3rd - With one out and a man on third (Willis who had just tripled), Hanley strikes out again.

2) Bottom 6th - After Lugo reaches on a throwing error by Hanley (not credited, but it was an error), Willis gives up a homerun to Nomar.

Honorable mentions include Hanley's strikeout to start the game and his strikeout to start the 8th.

Talk all you want about Alfredo's inability to hit with RISP this season, but don't try to tell me he hurt the Marlins more last night than Hanley did with his lackluster play.

Hanley thread right here. 12 posts. 214 views.

Totally different subject. This is the thread in which people have been venting about last night's game and thanks to Ramp, most has been directed toward Amezaga and Girardi. I am just providing a player last night more deserving of the board's disgust.

Actually this thread was created before the end of the game to question a [series] of decisions by Girardi. Rarely (thank gawd) do we have threads that blames or credits certain players for a win or loss. Of course, with a single button you can change that (please don't).

Some you people need to get off of your high horses. There is nothing wrong with discussing baseball strategy.

I don't have any problem discussing baseball strategy. However, this thread was not created for a nice rational discussion. This was created to be a bash Amezaga and Girardi thread. That was made clear from the first message (not to mention Ramp creating his new red bolded signature with Amezaga's RISP avg):

Why is Amezaga not being PH for?

Why is Train hitting for himself?

:banghead :banghead :banghead :banghead

If someone wants to create an honest thread discussing baseball strategy they won't start the thread in the heat of the moment in game when fans are in the middle of cursing the players under discussion for screwing up. Thats all in my humble opinion, of course.

This was made as Amezaga was coming up to bat.... and while it may appear in rant form, it's still a good discussion starter for baseball strategy
