Alfonso Soriano is close to being a 40/40 (forty home runs, forty stolen bases) man....again. Soriano's now at 44 home runs, tying an Expos/Nationals franchise record. And he has 34 stolen bases with a month left to play.

Back in '02 he seemed a cinch to become only the fourth forty-forty player in ML history. Poor Sori got the forty stolen bases and then forty-one, but he got stuck on thirty-nine homers and try as he would (and he tried with all his might), that fortieth home run just wouldn't come. He finished the season 39-41 and in a serious slump from overswinging that carried into the postseason ... that was when he got the reputation for being an easy mark for the pitch low and outside. In the three years that followed, with the Yankees and then with Texas, he never hit more than 38 home runs nor stole more than 35 bases.
