Notes: Resop proving to be reliable

Righty worked out of bases-loaded jam in Saturday's win

 

 

MIAMI -- Finding relievers who can post scoreless innings is a challenge for all teams in this final stretch of the season.

 

The Marlins thus far have found a right-handed setup man who has given them some quality work lately. September callup Chris Resop escaped some tense moments in the 10th inning on Saturday night and collected the win over the Phillies as the Marlins pulled out a 4-3 victory in 10 innings.

 

Resop saw action with the Marlins early in the season, but he spent most of the year at Triple-A Albuquerque.

 

In four September appearances, the hard-throwing righty has given up one run in 3 1/3 innings. He was tossed into a difficult spot on Saturday.

 

Shane Victorino and Chase Utley each singled with two outs, bringing up the dangerous Ryan Howard. Despite the game being tied and two runners on, Howard was intentionally walked.

 

With 56 homers, including eight off the Marlins this season, Marlins manager Joe Girardi said of Howard: "It's like he's playing in Williamsport [Pa., home of the Little League World Series]."

 

Resop got out of the jam when Jeff Conine lined out sharply to Josh Willingham in left field.

 

"He's pitched really well since he's come back," Girardi said. "We need important innings from him."

 

Coincidentally, Resop's locker in the Marlins' clubhouse belonged to Conine last season. So getting out his former teammate was a challenge for Resop.

 

"Jeff's a good hitter," Resop said. "It was a first-pitch curveball, it was down. He went down and got it."

 

Resop understands what is at stake. The Marlins are in the National League Wild Card race, and the Phillies are also in contention.

 

"This is building confidence in yourself and everybody being confident in me," Resop said. "I feel a lot better now with the experience I have and where I'm at."

 

Resop has seen improvement in his curveball, which is another pitch to go along with a 95 mph fastball.

 

"My curveball the last few weeks has been a good pitch for me," he said.

 

Rotation possibilities: Being off on Thursday gives the Marlins more time to figure out how they want to set up their rotation in the final weeks.

 

If the team stays as is, Ricky Nolasco would be in line to start Friday at Atlanta. However, Girardi said that is not necessarily the case.

 

Since Dontrelle Willis is pitching on Sunday, he would be going on four days' rest and able to pitch on Friday.

 

And the way Anibal Sanchez is throwing, he could fall in line to start Saturday in Atlanta.

 

Girardi says he will sit down with pitching coach Rick Kranitz to determine where to slot Nolasco, who has missed two straight starts because of tightness behind his right knee.

 

If Willis gets the nod for Friday, he then would be on pace to also start on Sept. 20 at the Mets, Sept. 26 at home against the Reds, and the last game of the season, Oct. 1 against the Phillies at Dolphin Stadium.

 

Wood makes a hit: Jason Wood is showing that perseverance does pay off. In the fourth inning on Saturday, the 36-year-old infielder collected a pinch-hit single, then stole the first base of his big-league career. On that play, he was interfered with Utley at second, enabling him to take third.

 

"I reacted, I saw the ball go into center field and I reacted trying to go to third base," Wood said. "[utley] was in my way, and he was intentionally trying not to get out of my way. I tried to go to third, or he [umpire Rick Reed] probably wouldn't have given it to me."

 

Wood scored on Dan Uggla's infield single.

 

"It's nice to be able to do something like that," Wood said of contributing.

 

A September callup who spent the season at Triple-A Albuquerque, the hit was Wood's first in the big leagues since he was with the Tigers in 1999. He had gone a span of six years, 343 days between hits.

 

That stretch between hits was the longest since Todd Jones went 10 years, 15 days. Jones had a hit with the Astros on July 27, 1995, and his personal drought ended on Aug. 10, 2005, while the reliever was with the Marlins.

 

For position players, Wood's dry spell was the most since Warren Cromartie went seven years, 208 days (Sept. 26, 1983-April 13, 1991).

 

Hill excused: First-base coach Perry Hill was excused from the team on Saturday, and he returned to his home in Lantana, Texas, after receiving word his wife had to go to the hospital.

 

This is the third time this season Hill has gone back home to tend to family-related matters. It is unclear if or when Hill will return.

 

"His wife and kids come way before us," Girardi said.

 

Hill is regarded as one of the best infield instructors in the game, and he is credited with the defensive improvement of the entire infield.

 

Hill was with the team during warmups on Saturday, but he when the game started, Dean Treanor handled coaching duties at first base.

 

AFL representatives: Shortly after the regular season ends in early October, Arizona Fall League action will begin.

 

In years past, a number of Marlins prospects used the AFL to get extra work in preparation for the big leagues. An example is rookie right fielder Jeremy Hermida, who once was a teammate of Howard's in the Arizona Fall League.

 

This year, seven prospects will be headed to Arizona in October. Among the group are four pitchers: Adam Bostick, Scott Nestor, Scott Tyler and Matt Yourkin.

 

Three position players will be making the trip: middle infielder Brian Cleveland, outfielder Brett Carroll and first baseman Gaby Sanchez.

 

Coming up: In the series opener with the Mets on Monday at 7:05 p.m. ET at Dolphin Stadium, Anibal Sanchez (7-2, 2.89 ERA) makes his first start since tossing a no-hitter against the Diamondbacks. New York counters with lefty Dave Williams (5-3, 5.68).

so in order to get resop up for the playoffs (if we get that far) we need to accirdently break messengers ankle?

I think you're correct.

So in conclusion, the only way Resop would be on the roster is if a pitcher who was on the 25 on the last day of August gets hurt and we need an injury replacement.

No. You have to be on the 40-man (on the 31st of August) to qualify as an injury replacement. Now the "injury replacement" thing is a bit of a stretch: if you guys remember that in '02 K-Rod was added as an injury replacement, according to ESPN.com he was replacing someone who was placed on the DL before the season even started, thus making him "eligible" for the postseason roster. So I'm now wondering if we could put Resop on the roster as an injury replacement for someone like Carlos Martinez. Anyone know if this loophole still exists?

Aside from his BB/K ratio, I've been very happy with Resop's progress and look forward to him being an important part of the 'pen next season.
