Marlins in Broward?

Featured Replies

Holly, I understand people have different reasons for not going and I think driving time is a major reason many fans don't go and I understand that and sympathize with them and don't hold it against them.

In my post I was merely correcting the other posters who claim that Pompano would be much closer to the fan base and I laid out the attendance facts to support my statement.

:thumbup My mini-vent was not at you but at the stats.

Holly, distance means one thing but traffic patterns are significantly more importnat. Why does it matter if you're 20 miles away if the drive takes an hour, compared to if you are 25 miles away and the drive takes 45 minutes?

Downtown Miami has the highest concentration of daytime workers in South Florida...at 5or 6pm when everyone is leaving Downtown heading home I-95 northbound becomes clogged.

It takes about 30 minutes to get from Downtown to Pro Playeron I-95 but less than 15 minutes to get from Pro Player to Downtown.

Same distance in miles but significant difference in time and since most home games are played at night on weekdays this is so important to consider.

Lots of Miami-Dade residents live an hour+ drive away from Dolphins Stadium. Yesterday I was actually in Pompano. I left at 5pm to get to Miami...I went down I-95 south bound and made it to US1 at the end of the I-95 in 45 minutes...I-95 going northbound was gridlocked.

Look, I dont give a sh*t where they put a stadium. They could put it in Jupiter or Homestead for all I care I just want a stadium done in South Florida (IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR).

EXACTLY.

You guys are entitled to your opinion but not to your own set of facts.

Pompano would be much more convenient to the Palm Beach fans but Palm Beach fans make-up a minimal percentage of the fan base.

Pompano would be a little bit more convenient to Broward fans. Broward is close behind Miami-Dade in attendance.

Pompano would be a lot less convenient to Miami-Dade. Miami-Dade leads all counties in attendance.

I could use your arguements against ya on this theory. Why does Miami-Dade residents have the biggest draw of fans?? Because the current stadium is in Miami-Dade. The current location is over an hour away from PBC residents now. With the exception being the southernmost parts of PBC. A distance that you deem undriveable for Miami-Dade residents in a post a couple earlier than this one. So it would seem logical that PBC and Broward would more than make up the amount of ticket sales lost from Miami-Dade residents simply because of the more expendable income that has been reported from reliable sources. And the corporate sales won't suffer either. There are plenty of large corporations in Broward and PBC. Miami dosen't have a monopoly on large corporations.

But I won't. I won't take the stand that just because Miami-Dade residents were willing to say screw PBC fans and want it downtown Miami that residents here should say the same right back at them. I still say Hialeah because it is the most convenient for all the fans. But talking to people in PBC today and people from Broward I may be about the only one that feels this way. And seeing that team executives have met 4 times in the last 5 months with Broward mayor Ben Graber and Pompano Beach officials (quote from Graber) it seems that the Marlins are taking this seriously.

Oh please...the stadium is on the countyline... I think it's like 8 blocks from Broward. Kendall, South Miami, those areas further south may be in Miami-Dade but Palm Beachers can get to the Stadium quicker than they cna.

That's a very flawed argument.

Of course Miami is going to account for the largest percentage...the stadium IS IN MIAMI GARDENS.

I'm not turning this into Palm Beach versus the rest of the county, but Miami and all their disposable wealth hasn't given the Marlins a fair-shake, I think it's time to stop being married to the concept that Miami is the only way to make it work.

There are a plethora of high-powered law firms, investment companies and private businesses housed in Palm Beach and Broward counties, and there are a boatload of baseball fans in Palm Beach county and Broward county to go along with a boatload of disposable income.

If Miami supports this team to dead last in attendance, isn't it time to wonder about the capability of this as a baseball market?

Exactly. DS is much more convenient to Broward residents than Dade, and Dade still is the largest draw of the 3 counties.

If you put the stadium in Pompano or some other piece of sh*t city in Broward, youll just have a stadium that isnt convenient to anybody

Well, its very convient for people in Broward and Palm Beach. My dad works about 5 minutes from that site and he says its sooo easy to get to work (We lived in both Broward and Palm Beach)

I really don't think anyone is talking distance. When people say too far they mean time wise. It takes us over an hour now. I rarely look at the odometer, I always look at the clock. 30 minutes to get from downtown to Joe Robbie?? Where is every body then? This is the fan base everybody is bragging and counting on???

Traffic flow is irrelevant. Flow going out from downtown now?? But how can anyone disagree that there won't be traffic flow going into downtown if a stadium is built there? People will all of a sudden want to take the extra time to take mass transportation?? Something that never has gone over real well in South Florida. But because a few want the stadium built in their back yard all of a sudden mass transportation is going to be a big hit? I really doubt that. I can forsee a traffic nightmare going in and out of downtown. Probably why that deal has gone sour. That and the parking.

From what I have been reading the top two sites right now are Pompano and Hialeah. Miami-Dade people might want to start rethinking things.

Yawn.

Is Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park convenient for anyone? Or Shea?

What does Miami want, it put right under their nose so they can fall out the door? Good teams in good markets draw fans, regardless of the "convenience."

For the life of me, I still can't understand why anyone thinks rain, heat or traffic exist only in Miami.

TSwift, DS is much more convenient for Broward fans than Miami-Dade fans. Almost everyone in Broward county lives within 45 minutes of DS while over half of Miami-Dade lives over 45 minutes from the DS. When I go to the stadium from my office I have to drive into Broward and then back to Miami-Dade to get to the stadium.

miami15, it's a waste of time discussing this issue with those who can't grasp the concept of traffic patterns. Between the 3 counties I would guesstimate there's approximately between 1.5 million people who live over an hour from DS with about half of them in Palm Beach and the other half in Miami-Dade.

Judging by what I've seen from downtown stadiums, I hate them. PETCO Park is located in the worst possible place. You cannot park at the stadium. You have to park at Qualcomm / Jack Murphy and park and ride the trolley 20 minutes to get to the game. The only other option is going into the downtown area and spending hours looks for an open Ace parking lot and spending 20 bucks to park for the game.

Going on this and the fact of how horrible a sports town San Diego is, I'm very surprised the Padres are still able to sell games out.

whats wrong with PETCO? you park your car at a trolley station and take the damn train to the game. The trolley is pretty convenient, so why would you want to drive when theres a trolley?

and if the idea is SO awful, then why do they sell out?

Yankee, Fenway, and Shea are all on transit lines. Not to mention that sports cities dont get much better than New York and Boston, so of course theyll show up...and people would do whatever it takes to make it to a game at Fenway and Yankee

also, you really cant underrate the weather factor in Miami. its one of the most (if not the most) uncomfortably hot cities in the US. Phoenix might be worse...but they have a dome and we dont.

fact is, Miami is a sh*tty sports town and people wont show up unless a) it becomes popular to do so (2003) or b) its convenient as hell to show up. putting the stadium in Broward would be an awful idea

Traffic nightmare going downtown? Nah...let's be real here. If a downtown stadium was built we could reasonably expect 20-25k on weeknights, maybe a bit more for big games, but this is still South Florida...

Anywyas... the Heat get about 20K all the tiem on weeknights. Traffic really isn't a heavy issue for Daders on weeknight gmaes. Getting to Downtown isn't especially difficult because traffic is heading in the opposite direction: away from downtown. Once you get out of Downtown which doesn't take long it's easy, plus the metrorail believe it or not is jam packed after every game. We can really expect Heat crowds to be similiar to Marlins Downtown crowds on weeknights... Downtown can handle 35K-40K on weekends easy, duh.

Marlins ballpark chances at Pompano considered a long shot

County leaders skeptical about use of tax dollars

POMPANO BEACH ? A Florida Marlins ballpark as part of a revamped Pompano Park Harness Track may be appealing to some local leaders and track officials, but securing financing could be a tough sell.

A day after Pompano Beach Mayor John Rayson said he had been meeting for months with Broward County Mayor Ben Graber and the Marlins about a stadium at the harness track, several county commissioners raised concerns about using tax dollars for the project.

In addition, Rayson and Graber, who have been spearheading talks since May, will be out of their current offices by the end of the year, meaning there may be no one to champion the idea. Rayson is running for county circuit judge and will need to vacate his seat by the end of the year; Graber will be out of office Nov. 7 after running unsuccessfully for the state Senate.

Neither would release details of a financing proposal, but officials say it could involve the track donating land, and the county, city, Marlins and state contributing dollars to the project. Rayson indicated revenue generated from new slot machines at the harness track and three other county pari-mutuels could be targeted.

The county and Pompano Beach already have agreements in place to receive a portion of the revenue generated by the machines.

"We know it is coming and I believe it will be substantial," Rayson said of the slots revenue. Rayson was reluctant to discuss the proposal in detail since it hasn't been finalized.

Graber also declined Wednesday to discuss the proposal, which he hopes can be finalized within the next two weeks.

County Commissioner Suzanne Gunzburger on Wednesday was among the skeptics.

"I have no idea where they're going to find the funds," she said.

The Marlins, who are in talks with Miami-Dade County and Hialeah about a proposed $430 million ballpark, declined comment. Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina couldn't be reached.

Major League Baseball has also been working on a stadium location for the Marlins and has contracts to purchase land south of Miami Arena in downtown Miami. Miami Mayor Manny Diaz also declined comment Wednesday.

The Marlins, who have been seeking a retractable-roof ballpark, have a lease to play at Dolphin Stadium through 2007 with a series of one-year options through the 2010 season.

Pompano Park officialsunveiled plans and conducted a ceremony to celebrate the completion of steelwork Wednesday for a $140 million racetrack casino that will house 1,500 slot machines, bars and restaurants. Officials said discussions about a stadium east of the casino are preliminary.

"Our goal for the Isle at Pompano Park is to create an exciting, must-see attraction for South Florida residents and visitors. To that end, we are talking about a variety of opportunities, one of which is with the Florida Marlins," Doug Shipley, the track's general manager, said in a statement. "We've only talked and we need to wait and see where it goes."

Alan Koslow, a Hollywood attorney representing the track, added: "It's a long shot, but don't bet against it."

While a ballpark could bring thousands of potential slots players to the grounds for 81 home dates a year, Major League Baseball has indicated it will closely review any proposal to build a ballpark near a gambling venue or with gambling revenue.

But the proposal might not even get that far. Some county commissioners expressed surprise that Graber had been in discussions without their knowledge and were opposed to using slots revenue, which will become part of the county's general fund. Last week, the commission agreed to use some of those dollars to balance the budget. Pompano Beach Vice Mayor George Brummer said the city's slots revenue has also been promised to other projects.

Gunzburger and fellow county Commissioners John Rodstrom and Lois Wexler said they would oppose putting general fund revenue toward a sports venue, particularly in what is expected to be the first of several tough budget years.

"We already cut the budget based on that money," Gunzburger said.

County Vice Mayor Josephus Eggelletion said he's also concerned about Broward being used by the Marlins as they seek to cement a deal in Miami-Dade.

"Being utilized to drive negotiations someplace else, that would be an embarrassment," Eggelletion said.

yeah, because the current fan base is supporting the team so well. move closer to Dade fans, and theyll show up more. its that easy

i guess youve never been to a Heat game...because if you went, youd realize that there isnt much parking for them, and a good amount of people take Metrorail to the game, and it isnt an insane parking nightmare like you say it is

Fine, then Dodger stadium.

Traffic is 100000000000000000000000000X worse, there's no public transportation of note, it's out of the city proper, day games are hotter, much hotter (heat issues are a common occurance) and there are a million things to do in LA, yet people still show up and the tickets still get sold.

Fact of the matter is, Miami always tells people why it won't support the team, but doesn't really do anything except whine about the way things should be, and what they're asking for is impossible, and they're expectations are so out of whack with other major cities it's obscene.

Nah nah nah, don't compare the Dodgers to the Marlins. The Dodgers havebeen around for ever and have an established fan base. They play in a classy stadium that is perfect for baseball. Day games in LA hotter than Miami? Whaaat? Summertime here is hot and humid. It's not nearly the same with LA's dry heat and plenty of days in the low 80s...you must've visited for a heat wave but no way is LA hotter than Miami. There is no threat of rain in LA either, you're never gonna go and get hit with a 100 minute rain delay.

And Dodger Stadium has a pretty damn good location. It's right outside Downtown, probably only 10-15 minutes away with horrendous traffic, and has good interstate access for getting home. But it is in LA proper...it's virtually in Downtown.

OK...so you think Miami sucks

then what is your solution? move to Broward? yeah, that'll work, because people really care about driving to baseball games there. no matter how much anybody thinks Miami sucks, our neighbors to the north suck worse. yeah, lets move to Pompano instead of Downtown Miami. thats a brilliant move

Oh please...the stadium is on the countyline... I think it's like 8 blocks from Broward. Kendall, South Miami, those areas further south may be in Miami-Dade but Palm Beachers can get to the Stadium quicker than they cna.

Exactly. DS is much more convenient to Broward residents than Dade, and Dade still is the largest draw of the 3 counties.

If you put the stadium in Pompano or some other piece of sh*t city in Broward, youll just have a stadium that isnt convenient to anybody

Don't forget Miami-Dade leads the 3 counties in attendance. I know this little fact blows your "Miami doesn't support the team" argument into little pieces but I still wanted to bring it up.

To quote Chris Rock:

These "great" fans supported them to dead last in attendance. Keep up the good work. :thumbup

Thanks for proving my point.

BUT ITS NOT IN MIAMI BUDDY. f*** its barely in Miami-Dade county

the majority of people in Miami live around Coral Gables, South Miami, and Kendall...in other words, nowhere near the stadium. why is this so hard to grasp?

Nope Pro Player is not in Miami. Dade County and Miami aren't nearly the same thing. The stadium is .7 miles from the county line. If it were less than a mile north it wouldn't be fair to say it was in Broward. It's in no mans land. Miami Gardens is not in Miami. There are no Gardens there either. It is closer to get from almost all areas of Broward to PPS than it is to get from many parts of Dade during rush hour. The only thing Miamian about PPS is the name that was probably only named to give Miami Gardens some credibility.

SERIOUSLY. The solution is not where the stadium goes, but putting a f***ing roof on the thing to avoid the potential of getting nailed with a 2 hour rain delay. Even if it takes an hour to get to the stadium, more people would go if they knew there was a 100% chance of seeing a full game that night. Case closed.

As long as the stadium is accessible from 95 and the Turnpike it'll be workable for the tri-county area. Rain delays are the most serious convenience issue involved with going to games at present.
