"3B: David Wright, Mets. A .311-26-116 season helped him to a 43-vote advantage over Miguel Cabrera"

I know, who cares. It's only Sporting News. Now if Wright wins the Silver Slugger...

I wouldn't be shocked if he takes Silver Slugger and gets MVP votes. Call it the Jeter correllary.

In other award news: Dan Uggla wins Rookie of the Year by the Sports News

here is the word:

MIAMI -- From Rule 5 long shot to first-year All-Star and now a top rookie award winner.

Gritty second baseman Dan Uggla was voted by his peers as The Sporting News National League Rookie of the Year. The 26-year-old is one of two Marlins from 2006 honored.

Joe Girardi was named the TSN National League Manager of the Year.

Working with the youngest team and with the lowest payroll in the big leagues, Girardi guided the Marlins to a 78-84 record. The 41-year-old prided himself on getting the most out of his players, and the rookie-laden roster remained in serious Wild Card contention until mid-September before slipping down the stretch.

On Oct. 3, two days after the season ended, Girardi was dismissed by the Marlins after having a rocky relationship with the front office. He has been replaced by former Atlanta Braves third-base coach Fredi Gonzalez.

Uggla is perhaps the one rookie who exemplified the scrappy Marlins. Claimed in the Rule 5 draft from Arizona in December, the 26-year-old set a Major League record for home runs by a rookie second baseman. His 27 were three higher than the previous mark, set by Joe Gordon of the Yankees in 1938.

Uggla is the first player in league history to be selected as an All-Star in the year after being selected in the Rule 5 draft.

Along with leading the Marlins in home runs and establishing a team rookie home run record, Uggla's 90 RBIs are a team rookie mark. For the season, he appeared in 154 games, batting .282 with 26 doubles and seven triples.

Uggla, Josh Willingham and Mike Jacobs became the first trio of National League rookie teammates to top the 20-homer plateau in the same season.

In June, Uggla batted .309 with seven home runs, 15 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .706. Those numbers earned him co-Rookie of the Month honors with Florida pitcher Josh Johnson.

In his one season as Marlins manager, Girardi worked with 22 rookies before the September callup period. Florida got off to a dreadful 11-31 start, but it went on to become the first team in Major League history to eclipse the .500 mark after falling at least 20 games under. On Sept. 12, they improved to 73-72. Over that stretch, they went 62-41.

"I didn't take the job to win Manager of the Year," Girardi said with a few games left in the season. "I took the job to win the World Series."

While the Marlins fell short of reaching the postseason, they were vastly better than preseason predictions. One school of thought among league insiders was that this team could have lost anywhere from 100-120 games.

General manager Admin Beinfest acknowledges that Girardi is worthy of top managerial honors.

"I think justifiably so that he should be a candidate for that," Beinfest said last week. "If you look at what this team has accomplished and what he did with this team in conjunction with his staff, he should be a candidate for that."

The voting for the TSN awards was by players. The managers voted only for opposing managers, not themselves.

The American League All-Stars, Rookie of the Year, Pitcher and Comeback Player of the Year awards are based on voting by 220 AL players.

The National League awards are the totals of 296 players' votes.

In the American League, Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz are the only All-Stars who made the team last year. Andruw Jones and Chris Carpenter repeated in the National League.
