Bertuzzi not responding to treatment

With each passing day, the return of forward Todd Bertuzzi to the Panthers lineup looks more and more remote.

 

Bertuzzi, who sustained what is being described as back spasms at Washington on Oct. 18, is not responding to treatment and isn't close to returning.

 

Aside from putting Bertuzzi on the injured list, retroactive to Oct. 18, the Panthers aren't saying much. Coach and general manager Jacques Martin said last week the team might look at other options. A trade, waiver acquisition or promotion from the minors is a possibility.

 

Surgery to repair a herniated disc might end Bertuzzi's first -- and possibly only -- season with the Panthers.

 

On Monday, Martin, representatives for Bertuzzi and a back specialist held a conference call and talked about Bertuzzi's status. Martin is saying there is no update.

 

''They haven't decided what the next procedure is,'' Martin said Tuesday morning. ``Hopefully [today] we'll have an update. He hasn't done much. He's in pain. He's in treatment and is talking to doctors about the next step. He hasn't done any skating or things like that. I've spoken with Todd. It's painful, those back spasms.''

 

Pat Morris, Bertuzzi's agent, has not returned calls from The Miami Herald seeking comment.

This would be a huge blow as he really brought alot to the team early. Even if he responds to treatment he won't be 100% all year. Does anyone know if he has a history of injury problems?

Wow, that makes the Luongo trade look even worse.

This is terrible if he gets surgery. I guess the one good thing is that the insurance pays for his salary and not the panthers (I believe). Lets hope he is alright.

 

 

Btw if anyone wants cheap panthers tickets you can get them on stubhub.com. I was looking to get tickets for the nov 13 game vs washington and they are really cheap. Lower level row 5 right on the goal line for 50 dollars. I think face is double that. I think most games had deals like this.

I don't see how they can make a big move since they made it painfully obvious they weren't going to go right up to the cap, and Bertuzzi's still coming back so it isn't like there's $5 million just freed up.

Understood. I am not completley up to date on the Cats cap situation. Thats a part of the game I barely follow. It hurts to read things like this when our premier player is shelved for a while:

 

Roberto Luongo has started all but one game for Vancouver this season.

Luongo sports a goals against average of 2.14 and save percentage of .923, both in the league's top 10. Coach Alain Vigneault has said Luongo will play whenever he feels he can, meaning 70 starts isn't out of the question. Luongo is one of the very best in the league, and will reward his owners with a lot of starts, and great stats.

Said it then, will say it now, we didn't get equal value in return for Luongo (even if he is overrated). Only reason the trade made sense was that Luongo had made it clear he wasn't going to resign unless it made too much sense for him and not much for the Panthers.

 

Panthers got reamed on that trade, no question about it, but the team's 2-5 without Bertuzzi because they can't f***ing score, Luongo wouldn't change that.

They are missing that playmaker ability in Bertuzzi. It seemed like everytime he touched the puck he found a way to get it to the net or clsoe to someone at the net without fail. He will be missed.

Also, I know it has zero chance of happening, but Alex Kovalev has been having off ice issues with the Canadiens...he blew up after a game against Boston questioning just about everything you can question about an organization.

 

I'd love to see him added, but I don't think the Panthers have the right combination of young players they're willing to move, or the desire/ability to spend...or for that matter, that the Habs want to move him as he's still good for a point a game basically.

I wasnt trying to say i was happy about it. The initial article said that if he had surgery he would be out for the season. He did have the surgery and will only be out 6-8. The fact that he will be playing in the second half of the season is great considering i was under the impression that he wouldnt be playing at all.

No, seriously, if it takes at least a week to simply evaluate the success of the operation, he isn't making a miracle recovery.

 

Between the seriousness of the injury, uncertainty of the surgery and the way he plays (in front of the goalie and in the corner) the Panthers have to move forward as if he won't be back this year.
