Seriously, it goes against the Beinfest mindset...traded two young starters for two older relievers (relatively speaking...Vargas, for all the crap heaped upon him, is only 23).

Lindstrom throws 100 MPH straight as an arrow. There's a reason he never got a chance with the the Mets -- he's not very good. Henry Owens is the much better pitcher. Owens has a nasty fastball and is working on a slider. Iffy control, but he looks like a keeper. Potential closer material.

Here is the whole AP story that includes the Resop trade and other Marlins roster moves today....

 

MIAMI ? (AP) ? The Florida Marlins made a pair of trades Monday, acquiring two pitchers from the New York Mets and another from the Los Angeles Angels.

 

Florida sent left-handers Adam Bostick and Jason Vargas to the Mets in exchange for right-handers Matt Lindstrom and Henry Owens. Also Monday, the Marlins got right-hander Kevin Gregg from the Angels for right-hander Chris Resop.

 

"Both of the trades we were involved in today addressed our bullpen needs,'' Marlins general manager Admin Beinfest said. "We expect all three players acquired today to contribute to our club during the 2007 season.''

 

Resop and Vargas both spent some time with the Marlins last season; Resop went 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 22 relief appearances, while Vargas was 1-2 with a 7.33 ERA in 12 appearances, five of them starts.

 

Gregg appeared in two postseasons with the Angels, throwing two scoreless innings against the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 AL Division Series, then throwing two more shutout innings against the Chicago White Sox in the 2005 AL Championship Series.

 

Gregg was 3-4 with a 4.14 ERA in 32 games, including two starts, last season for the Angels.

 

Owens ? a Miami native ? appeared in three games with the Mets last season, plus went 2-2 with 20 saves for Double-A Binghamton. Lindstrom went 3-4 with 13 saves and a 3.38 ERA in 46 games last season between Binghamton and Single-A St. Lucie.

 

The Marlins also added left-hander Paul Mildren to their 40-man roster. Mildren was 10-10 with a 4.14 ERA in 28 starts this season with Double-A Carolina.

And if adding Mildren to the 40 man roster had something to do with it, why not give Mildren, Reggie Abercombie spot?

 

Not all hope should be lost though. I believe Owens and Gregg have potential (though both are much older than Vargas and Resop)

I have no problem with the Resop for Gregg deal. He is a high strikeout pitcher and has proven he can pitch in the big leagues. In the American League no less. Resop might have a decent future but he is not proven. Our pen needed help now. At the very least we are trying to help the team now instead of hording young pitchers for the future. Gregg is only 28 by the way. Don't now enough about the other deal to give an informed opinion yet.

The Resop deal I am pleased with but the Mets deal blew big balls! I happen to think Bostik is going to be a good ball player...

I agree with every single word you just said. Gregg is not an old man, and he is proven in the tougher league. Someone mentioned Henry Owens on this board a long time ago and I never forgot about him. It seems he is another classic case of a pitcher with very good stuff but poor control. If this guy can make it click..... it will be a great thing, and I'm sure we will give him every opportunity (no choice really). I'm not so down on this deal as many people here are, I like it very much mainly because of Owens.

Owens is probably the guy with the biggest potential impact: in 40 Double-A innings, he struck out seventy-four. He's got some control problems, too, but adjusting for park and translating his stats to MLB numbers, that gives him an OPS against of .456. OPS! He could be a good one.

I think this cements Pinto and Tankersley in the pen next season as your lefties. These are back of the pen guys and frankly we could have done worse.

 

Owens Joins Big League Club

To replace Pedro Martinez on the roster, the team originally recalled Heath Bell from Triple-A Norfolk, and Bell was in the clubhouse before the game. But Bell was ineligible because he had just been sent down on Tuesday, so instead they promoted righthanded fireballer Henry Owens. The 27-year-old Owens will be making his major league debut after posting a 1.01 ERA and a 51/8 K/BB ratio in 25 innings for Binghamton. Owens has a chance to be a setup man if his arm holds up.

I understand the reasoning behind this, but I think we got ripped off big time.

 

Relievers are not worth starting pitching. I don't think there's any question that Vargas and Bostick were fringe guys, but it's not like we got sure things back...and we got OLDER in the process.

 

Way I look at the Mets deal is they won big in the short term, we rolled the dice and hope to win in the long-term. I'm most concerned that Owens is 27 and has yet to see AAA and had to repeat high A four times.

I like both these deals for the Fish...especially the Resop deal (a ton). I have to go...I ill explain later.

I'm fine with all the moves. We had no room for Vargas, even if we traded away half our projected starting rotation.
