Admin Coker Fired

Featured Replies

Joe Rose was reporting on the radio that this morning it is expected to be annouced that Admin Coker will be fired.

It wasn't Joe Rose that reported but instead it was canesport.com that reported it at 3 a.m. today...the press conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. at UM after a 9 a.m. meeting between Shalala, Dee and the Board of Trustees

I wonder who will coach in the bowl game (if they get invited)? If they find a new coach in the next few weeks, would he coach the bowl game or would it be Randy Shannon?

I doubt he'd do it if fired, but Admin could end up coaching the game... lets see what happens today!

If invited Coker will coach them...is what has been said at UM thus far

its happening on espnnews and espn... he's gone

so did the conference happen at 11?

yes Coker has been dismissed from the team, but if UM accepts a bowl bid...Coker would coach the team at the bowl game....

University of Miami football coach Admin Coker was fired this morning, ending a 12-year UM career, six of them as head of the program.

His dismissal was announced at an 11 a.m. news conference on campus.

Coker, 58, led the Hurricanes to a national championship his first season as head coach in 2001. He came within one penalty flag of a second national championship in 2002 when he lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Fiesta Bowl.

But the program has slipped dramatically in recent years. Thursday night's 17-14 victory over Boston College in front of a small crowd in the Orange Bowl evened the Hurricanes' regular season record at 6-6.

While the UM defense, for the most part, has remained outstanding, its offense has been practically nonexistent.

Coker defended his performance until the end, saying as late as Thursday night that he intended to go on the road recruiting with his staff Sunday.

His final record as head coach: 59-15.

UM is expected to try hard to lure Rutgers' Greg Schiano, who served as Miami defensive coordinator for two years, as its next head coach. Schiano has completely turned around a Rutgers program that once was one of the worst in the country.

Other speculation centers on Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez, 59, who is close friends with UM President Donna Shalala and turned down the UM head coaching job when Butch Davis left in 2001.

Alvarez finished his coaching career at Wisconsin in 2005. His record from 1990 to 2005 was 108-70-4.

Others whose names have surfaced include: Steve Kragsthorpe of Tulsa, Mike Leach of Texas Tech, Gary Patterson of Texas Christian, Rich Rodriguez of West Virginia and Miami defense coordinator Randy Shannon.

9-1 Marshall

9-8 @ Oklahoma

9-15 Texas A&M

10-6 Florida International

FSU

Georgia Tech

Duke

North Carolina

Virginia Tech

Virginia

Boston College

and one more ACC team, but not sure which one

schiano is going to be tough to lure (i think he stays and waits for the penn st job to open up when paterno leaves), but he would be a fantastic hire and i'd love to see it happen

if they decide to go for a pro coordinator as has been rumored, i hope they make a run at norm chow

Give Jimmy a call, Schiano, Tuberville, Hicks one of them will most likely take the job if offered. Shannon I wanna keep at D.C. definitely. He is the best DC in college football and a great recruiter.

jimmy would be phenomenal

i doubt tuberville leaves auburn for the miami job - there's not a huge upside there

and yeah they have to try their hardest to keep shannon

If Schiano had stayed one more year at UM, he probably would have been the head coach now. I mean he is doing the best he can at rutgers, and realistically he can never win a title their. At UM he could do that. We'll see what happens.

why would all of these coaches want to goto miaimi?

unless the school is actually going to throw down some coin for massive facility upgrades, why would any coach at a big conference already make this move?

jimmy isnt going back to coaching.

schiano has gone on reacord saying he isnt leaving.

tuberville would be taking a step down by going to miami.

honestly it'll probably come down to one of patterson at tcu, kragthorpe at tulsa, or leach at texas tech taking the job if/when schiano turns it down

as long as one of those three can recruit miami will be fine, and personally i think it'd be kind of cool to see what leach's offense could do with the talent at miami/in south florida

UM has to worry just as much about a new head coach as they do keeping Randy Shannon away from FIU. I wouldn't be surprised if Pete Garcia made a huge run at him for the vacant head coach job.

As for UM's opening, Schiano or Rodriguez would be the best fits you'd think.

Randy Shannon would actually leave UM for FIU?

For a head coaching chance and a possible chance to coach his son...i wouldn't hold it against him if he did it
