Young named AP Offensive Rookie of the Year

NEW YORK (AP) -- Vince Young looks as if he'll make the NFL his personal playground, too.The dynamic quarterback for the Tennessee Titans won The Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year Award on Wednesday. He did it in the same fashion he turned around the Titans' season -- running away from the rest of the field.

Young, who led Texas to the 2005 national championship and was the third overall pick in last April's draft, overwhelmed one of the strongest rookie classes in NFL history. He received 23 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league. That easily beat New Orleans wide receiver Marques Colston and Jacksonville running back Maurice Drew, who had nine apiece; San Diego tackle Marcus McNeill (6); and Saints running back Reggie Bush (3).Running back Carnell "Cadillac" Williams of Tampa Bay won the award last year. Young is the third member of the Tennessee-Houston franchise to take top rookie honors: Earl Campbell in 1978 and Eddie George in 1996 did it for the Houston Oilers.Young was the catalyst in Tennessee' rally from 0-5 to 8-8, at times looking as unstoppable for the Titans as he did with the Longhorns. A starter from Week 4, Young sprinkled all kinds of spectacular big plays with a growing maturity in joining Ben Roethlisberger (2004) as the only quarterbacks to win top rookie honors in the 49-year history of the award. He became the first rookie quarterback to rush for more than 500 yards in the Super Bowl era, and his passing skills improved all year under coach Jeff Fisher and offensive coordinator Norm Chow.

Im not being a homer at all but Jones-Drew deserved this the most. Vince Young's 66 QB rating....he is over-rated....played 2 games vs. a good Jags D and in the 1st game threw for 40% and 3 INT, 2nd game he threw for about 60 yards.

Jones-Drew set an NFL record for rookies with 16 TD! 2,200 ALL PURPOSE yards! And he wasn't even the full time starter! The averaged 5.6 a carry??? Who in the world does that? But because the NFL has an agenda, Vince Young is more marketable, and Drew is 5'7 and plays in Jacksonville, he lost.

On CBSsportsline.....he is what other fans are saying......

bucknut1969:

Maurice Drew just got the greatest screw job in recent NFL history. 15 TDs, over 2200 total yards and he gets a distant second??? So what if Vince Young ran for his life because his team sucked. He also had a 66 QB rating.

The AP voters are retarded.

GNRSOX:

This is a good point. Vince Young did help the Titans almost get to the playoffs though. This is great for a rookie QB. I probably would have voted for Maurice Jones-Drew also though.

The hype job and media-fawning on VY started during the winning streak. They played Jax and Jax had 400+ yards of offense vs. Titans who had 98 yards of offense. Titans had 3 defensive TDs. The headlines read how Vince Young won another game! He had as much to do with that win as you and I.

Take a look at his stats, the worst QB rating and every other stat. Spare me the comment of "Who cares about the stats, he wins games" BS. Like the Jax game. In most of the other games, his passing was atrocious.

libsrmorons:

My prediction is that we will see the same thing with him that we saw with Vick. Everyone is going to shoot their loads over this guy before the next season. I bet you people will predict that the Titans will be a playoff contender next year because they assume he will ony be better. What will happen is that by next season, teams will have this circus/charade of running figured out, and will force him to throw. They will have less wins than this year and the same questions will be raised about his ability to be a QB, not just a runner.

crashintonickdm:

i agree with vince getting it, as stated about, a rookie quarterback came in and took an 0-5 team into playoff contention.

maurice drew is 10x better than reggie bush.

mowse:

Jones Drew was absolutely deserving of the award and got totally jobbed. This comes from a Jacksonville Jaguar hater. Look at the numbers he put up and remember that he was not even a full time starter.

Vince Young is a joke. If he was a white, drop back pocket passer who led the Titans to the same number of wins, he would have finished behind Jones Drew, Colston and possibly Leinart.

For some reason the media gets a big hard on for these "atheletic" QB's. Vince Young = Kordell Stewart = Michael Vick. None of them are legitimate NFL QB's. They are tailbacks who take the snap from center.

What a joke.

Young completed 51.5% of his passes, had 12 TD passes against 13 interceptions, posted a 66.7 QB rating, and lost 8 fumbles.

Jones-Drew had 2,200 yards and 16 TDs......

lol this is just as funny as Charles Woodson winning the Heisman Trophy over Peyton Manning.

Vince Young's 66 QB rating....he is over-rated....played 2 games vs. a good Jags D and in the 1st game threw for 40% and 3 INT, 2nd game he threw for about 60 yards.

Vince Young's numbers do not do his talent justice.

C'mon man don't be blind.....

this guy is right....

steveo508:

you guys nailed it right on the head! The media has runied all of the awards that once meant something. The media picked the sexiest story and ran with it all season long! Vince Young a few things right, but for the most part he was definately not the best rookie. look at the numbers! they don't lie. Jones-Drew got SCREWED!!! Imagine if this guy played in New York or Dallas, we would not be having this conversaton because Drew would have every single vote! I dont want to repeat what bucknut said but the AP voters are RETARDED!!!

Vince Young

passer rating ranks 30th - behind Leinart(23rd)

passing yards ranks 26th - behind Leinart(21st)

passing TD ranks 22nd - tied with Harrington who played in 4 fewer games

...must have been a down year for Offensive Rookies.....NOT !!!!

Huge Years from Colston, Jones -Drew and how does Addai get zero run??..only rokkie over 1,000 yards

What gets overlooked is the performance of the Titan D (down the stretch forcing big plays) and Pac-Man Jones who should get some MVP consideration.

...........................Jones-Drew put up numbers in the company of hall of fame players. He recorded the third-most all-purpose yardage by a rookie in NFL history (2,212), behind only Gale Sayers and Tim Brown (passed Eric Dickerson the last week). Yet, Young wins by a landslide??

that's why i no longer pay attention to the ap awards, because they are just based on hype and media favorites instead of the best performers in the game. vince young got all the hype and attention and of course, the media loves to follow the hype players instead of actually looking at the stats and performances. drew or colston should have won this, with vince young a distant fifth.

when do the players choice awards get announced?

Cute.

He's the only stat the matters:

VY's record was like 7-1. He made a bad team good.

cute? His record was 8-3 but nice guess. They played better because of Pac Man Jones, an opportunistic defense, Travis Henry, and Jeff Fisher. Vince Young had nothing to do with 6 of the 8 wins....you watch them much?

He won the award because his name recognition......cute.

Awards are meaningless and it's a popularity contest.....it's as plain as black and white that Jones-Drew had the best season.

It's another case of the media hyping the flashy player like Charles Woodson over Peyton Manning for the Heisman....gimme a break lol

No, if it was on name Reggie Bush would have won it. VY won it because he took an 0-5 team and went 8-3 with it.

That just means he's an underacheiver...there's a lot of guys who have had great talent but played like sh*t...

Talent doesn't mean anything, it's what you do with it...Tom Brady doesn't have much talent, but he's the best QB in the NFL

They went with the hype...with all the hype surrounded Young, Bush, and Leinart, they were going to give it to one of those three regardless of what actually happened, and Young had the best year of the three...Drew was definitely robbed

Young will still have a better career than any of the other candidates though

I don't know how you can say his future is better than all the other candidates.....Bush, Jones-Drew, Colston could all have better careers than Vince Young. Remember the past 2 ROYs Cadillac Williams and Ben Roeslisberger aren't too hot anymore.

Sure, you can say Vince Young had a good record but what people don't know is the Jags led the NFL with 17 season ending injuries and if the Jags didn't have Jones-Drew, they would have finished with 4 wins instead of 8.

I was in the stands when the Titans came to Jax and he was HORRIBLE... He accounted for 3 INTS with 1 TD against the Jag's 3rd string.. Final score 37-7.

Second Jags vs Titans game. He, the so called Rookie of the Year had 8 offensive series that went 3 and out. Finished with 85 passing yards, 4 rushes for 4 yards!

WOW! I'm convinced he's ROY. ......

Young's stats were up and down as Drew was very consistant.

I agree Drew had a better year...but that doesn't at all mean that he will have a better career

Talent wise, Young is head and shoulders above the rest...he may have underpeformed this year, but when it's all said and done, Young will be the best player from this draft
