January 10, 200719 yr For all of you dreamers out there who think Park could sign on the cheap, two words - Scott Boras. Nevermind his client's best interest, it's not in his best interest to allow Park to sign for some bargain basement price. Not good for the image. The other thing here, and I've been waiting for someone to mention it, is just because Park can throw decent 1st innings every five days doesn't mean you can throw decent innings three, four or five days in a row. This is one of those things where no one will really ever know until someone tries it. It might work out fine, it might blow up, but be sure if you want to experiment with Park as your closer Boras will make sure you'll pay top dollar for the pleasure of trying. Park as a Boros client will not accept an incentive based contract or a discount...As much as pitchers are being paid this off-season don't think Park will not get his pay-day as well
January 11, 200719 yr Park hasn't been the guy he was with the Dodgers, at this point he'll need to prove himself, sign a one year deal than get his payday next offseason!
January 11, 200719 yr Wasn't Boras the agent for Pudge in 2003 when he signed with us? Or did he hire him late that year?
January 11, 200719 yr Park will not get much money at all. I probably could have phrased my comment better and compared to the contract he got from Hicks itwill be a pittance, but Boras will get him every penny possible it wouldn't suprise me to still see it in the millions. saying in the "millions" its not saying much ... just about any mediocre player gets contracts in the "millions" (meaning more than 1) nowadays. I'd still like to see that veteran presence in the pen next year
January 11, 200719 yr To further my point Park won't be cheap, Mulder just resigned with the Cardinals for 2 years guarenteed for 13 million and he can't even pitch til June the earliest with a partially torn rotator cuff BTW Mulder could have gotten more money if he would have chosen to go to Texas
January 11, 200719 yr Ugh. I don't like this at all. Many of you know my religious beliefs regarding the closer role and signing Chan Ho Park would be like worshipping the anti-christ. I don't see how you can say that. I would have thought with your views on closers that signing an iffy closer with injury problems for millions (ala Foulke or Gagne this offseason) would have been like worshipping the antichrist for you. Signing Chan Ho Park to be our closer would be a gamble but if he did not work out as a closer the Marlins would have other options for him, including slotting into the 5th rotation spot if the Marlins decide to go with the Nolasco as closer route. At least so we don't overwork/rush J. Garcia or Pinto by bringing them in to start too early if we go with Nolasco as closer.
January 11, 200719 yr Bottom line is the Marlins closer next year should be making $500,000 tops. I don't think Chan Ho Park is a good pitcher anymore...he hasn't had an ERA below 5.46 since 2001. Given the easier nature of the closer position, he could perform decently there, but that's a stretch. Still, his performance could easily be matched by a minor leaguer making the league minimum. Isn't Park a flyball pitcher? That could boast well in Dolphins Stadium...

After he moved to Rangers, he was trained two-simmer & sinking fastball by Hershiser pitching coach. (fly ball pitcher had a handicap in Ameriquest Field, you know)

Isn't Park a flyball pitcher? That could boast well in Dolphins Stadium... Nope. GB/FB 04 - 1.18 05 - 1.59 06 - 1.25 Career - 1.21 And considering he's been playing in Petco, I don't know if you could expect a drastic positive production shift from any "flyballness" since that is a pitcher's park as well. Regardless, he would be no worse then Borowski in 06 at a minimum (1.38 whip). I think he would perform better then that though with the HR rate being the only worry (he only have up 2 HR in all his 1st innings 05/06, 54 games, but obviously this is against predominantly 1 or 2 hitters before getting into stronger power sources, and as 03 likes to say, who knows how he pitches day-day versus every 5th potentially rendering everything moot, but overall, everything suggests he could pitch in bursts far better then starting where's I think the HR rate could drop rather dramatically). He's easily better then minor leaguer's like Field, Serrano, Koplove, Messenger, Fulchino, etc, so the only questions I would raise are - are some of the concerns with 'Boras being Boras' true and he'll demand a Piniero like $4 million contract, or has the rest of baseball soured on where he may have to accept a $1-2 contract for 2007 and take the 'opportunity' of being a closer for the first time and trying to cash in later. Plus, Boras said to Boston how about trying him as a closer, but does Park view himself as a starter and is waiting for say, the Mets or Nationals, or some other SP starved time to give him a call. Signing Chan Ho Park to be our closer would be a gamble but if he did not work out as a closer the Marlins would have other options for him, including slotting into the 5th rotation spot if the Marlins decide to go with the Nolasco as closer route.
