January 9, 200719 yr Chan Ho Park ? There was some talk a few weeks ago of Scott Boras trying to convince the Red Sox to try Park as their closer. The Sox appear to be taking that route with Joel Pineiro instead. Park actually had a respectable first half for the Padres in '06 (4.29 ERA, 1.28 WHIP). He could become a bullpen weapon and surprise closer for the Devil Rays or Marlins. http://www.rotoworld.com/content/features/...articleid=27530 Actually don't think it's a terrible idea. This could be a good idea for one year. I can't imagine him asking for a lot in salary, and we could probably get a very fair 2nd year club option. He doesn't have RP splits, but from 2006 the only stats that suggest he could be a better pitcher in short bursts. First Inn. .603 OPS against Innings 1-3 .751 OPS Innings 4+ .828 OPS And if he's a bust, he can't be worse then Moehler when it comes down to it. Just another idea. Not ideal, but given our situation...
January 9, 200719 yr Author would we even consider signing a boras agent at all? If he's going to use the Piniero deal as a parallel, then this obviously won't work, but given the lack of more prominent 'opportunities' in starting or relieving capacities, maybe taking a lower 2007 salary in hopes for a better opportunity to make yourself more attractive for free agency 2008 is a better move for Park. Boras is an asshat, but he realizes these situations as well. It's really up to if he can extort money from someone else - and that's all assuming the Marlins are interested in signing a viable MLB pitcher like Park and not exclusively working the minor league free agent (see Alfonseca type) level, or Armando, etc.
January 9, 200719 yr I wouldn't mind this. Might have another good year in that arm. Bring him on board!
January 10, 200719 yr I could give a good crap about Chan Ho Park...We need the next Rob Nen or Trevor Hoffman, both were young hotshots which came up in a Marlin uniform to take on the world...heck Looper is fine with me

Park has had one chance in his career to close, and he succeeded beyond expectations against top international talent. Give him a shot...

Dude i wasn't asking to sign Looper, i was saying to have a young pitcher asume the closer role. (like Looper did)
January 10, 200719 yr Correct me if Im wrong but wasnt Chan Ho Park's salary for 2006 more than the ENTIRE Marlins payroll? How will he be even remotely affordable? I think he'll bomb as a closer. Strictly just my opinion. I hate this "idea". Give Nolasco a shot at closing games. He has better stuff than Borowski.

The best FA options are probably Park and Hermansen, any order. I think either is a better idea then trading for Armando.
January 10, 200719 yr would we even consider signing a boras agent at all? I doubt it. Waste of effort. Im up for this as well... If hes cheap DO IT! He won't be cheap. Texas gave him that ridiculous contract and he'll never be cheap again. He made about $70,000,000 over the last five seasons.
January 10, 200719 yr Park is an interesting option. Definitely one of the better options I have seen suggested on this board (especially at this point). If the Marlin's can pull it off with their budget, Beinfest should take a chance. He won't be cheap. Texas gave him that ridiculous contract and he'll never be cheap again. He made about $70,000,000 over the last five seasons. I'm not so sure about that. If Park's starting options just aren't there and he decides the Marlins are a winner (and offer him one of the few chances he has to be a closer), he could sign here for less for a one year deal with the hopes to cash in next year.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You get paid to your ability, plain and simple. If he comes back the same, he is out closer of the future no doubt.
January 10, 200719 yr For all of you dreamers out there who think Park could sign on the cheap, two words - Scott Boras. Nevermind his client's best interest, it's not in his best interest to allow Park to sign for some bargain basement price. Not good for the image. The other thing here, and I've been waiting for someone to mention it, is just because Park can throw decent 1st innings every five days doesn't mean you can throw decent innings three, four or five days in a row. This is one of those things where no one will really ever know until someone tries it. It might work out fine, it might blow up, but be sure if you want to experiment with Park as your closer Boras will make sure you'll pay top dollar for the pleasure of trying.
January 10, 200719 yr I've always thought it would be nice to name a stadium after this fellow. I don't know if everyone missed this, but I literally laughed out loud when I read this.
January 10, 200719 yr Park will not get much money at all. I probably could have phrased my comment better and compared to the contract he got from Hicks itwill be a pittance, but Boras will get him every penny possible it wouldn't suprise me to still see it in the millions.

In the millions? I'd faint if I heard of any player represented by Scott Boras to sign anything other than an incredibly favorable contract. Any pro scout could tell you that Chan Ho has sucked for ages, he has terrible mechanics. Yet he continues to get paid. Why? Scott Boras. The guy had the foresight to put a clause in J.D. Drew's contract letting him opt out exactly when the new CBA would be coming into effect, knowing that $$$ would be skyrocketing. The guy must have dirt on every GM in the game or something.
