Cabrera has been linked with Chavez, when Pres Chavez stated that Miguel sent him one of his bat to be used for the "devil" (George Bush). Chavez waved the bat and made the remarks during his last political campaing.

 

Cabrera stated that he gave the bat to the local consul, and he did as a favor.

 

He doesn't support Chavez and he is concerned with the political direction of his country

A lot of people down here would get pissedoff. that's true in South Florida, especially in Dade County. That's shouldn't be a surprise to you or anyone.

Miggy could kill baby seals on the diamond, call Bush a neo-nazi (or whatever the "it" criticism is of world leaders) and refuse to stand for God Bless America (*ahem*) and I wouldn't care. He's an athlete, and anyone who looks at him as more than an athlete, be it political figure, role model, whatever has their priorities greatly out of line.

 

He can believe whatever he wants to believe, he can say whatever he wants to say (it certainly hasn't gotten the myriad Hollywood entertainers villified), but once it interferes with what his livelihood is, then it's a problem...until then, who cares.

No. It isn't free speech. Free speech would be saying that if he espouses Communist beliefs he should be arrested. Very different. There is a big difference between not having the freedom to speak your mind without fear of the government censoring or punishing you and having the sense to recognize the potential consequences to saying the wrong thing.

 

And no one would complain about the whole of America hating and blackballing a ball-player who made statements considered plainly racist. Whether or not it has anything to do with baseball. Remember John Rocker? Even good players who put up great seasons can screw it all up by saying the wrong thing.

This wouldn't be any different if Cabrera was going to games wearing a Che T-Shirt.

First, it is hardly insane. Communism killed more people in the 20th Century than lived on the planet in the 19th Century. As far as comparing Communism to the GOP, no matter how much you may dislike the GOP, it doesn't have that record of death.

 

Not to single you out, but you demonstrate the abject lack of understanding of the right to free speech. I am certain you are more likely to be able to tell me all five Simpsons characters than you are to tell me all five first ammendment rights (at least without looking it up.) It reminds me of when Tim Robbins gave a speech before the National Press Club complaining how his Free Speech rights were being infringed. If you say something unpopular, and you are reviled publically for it, your free speech rights are no infringed. The only way your free speech rights can be infringed upon is if a government agency silences you without due cause.

Some people who have lived under communism and that don't support Chavez could change their opinions towards him and even perhaps the Marlins. Of course, this is all theoretical. I do not see why this should blow over into a crisis where the Marlins would get less fan support than they already get if he said that he was pro-Chavez.

Not at all infringing on free speech. Everyone has a right to an opinion, and what you say will always affect their opinion of you.

 

It is vastly different to speak your mind and have people pissed off then to live in fear that if you speak your mind you will carted off to prison (or worse). Hell even GW Bush has people pissed off every time he talks. But last I checked, the Michael Moore's & Cynthia McKinneys of the US haven't been tossed into prison or in front of firing squads.

Plenty of people disagreed (and continue to disagree) with Bush, and have been richly rewarded for their conspiracy theory documentaries. What exactly have they had to fear?
