Posted March 1, 200718 yr Cabrera speaks in an interview with Noticiero 51. . . . Cabrera has been linked with Chavez, when Pres Chavez stated that Miguel sent him one of his bat to be used for the "devil" (George Bush). Chavez waved the bat and made the remarks during his last political campaing. Cabrera stated that he gave the bat to the local consul, and he did as a favor. He doesn't support Chavez and he is concerned with the political direction of his country
March 1, 200718 yr ummm who cares if he is Chavez is a communist...... Am sure it would piss off alot of people if it were true that our best player hangs out with a guy that is destroying there country and letting his people suffer.....

Miggy has a right to believe in whatever he feels like. Your position is completely anti-free speech and anti-democratic. People with your attitudes are closer to being communists than you'd like to admit.

He's saying that Miggy shouldn't be a communist and if he is he should't voice it because people will get pissed off. I couldn't give a rat's ass about Miggy's political beliefs. It's insane that anyone would get pissed off about it. If you don't like it, fine. But pissed off? That's like me getting pissed off at you for saying you're a Republican.

March 1, 200718 yr Miggy could kill baby seals on the diamond, call Bush a neo-nazi (or whatever the "it" criticism is of world leaders) and refuse to stand for God Bless America (*ahem*) and I wouldn't care. He's an athlete, and anyone who looks at him as more than an athlete, be it political figure, role model, whatever has their priorities greatly out of line. He can believe whatever he wants to believe, he can say whatever he wants to say (it certainly hasn't gotten the myriad Hollywood entertainers villified), but once it interferes with what his livelihood is, then it's a problem...until then, who cares.

That's like me getting pissed off at you for saying you're a Republican. No. It isn't free speech. Free speech would be saying that if he espouses Communist beliefs he should be arrested. Very different. There is a big difference between not having the freedom to speak your mind without fear of the government censoring or punishing you and having the sense to recognize the potential consequences to saying the wrong thing. And no one would complain about the whole of America hating and blackballing a ball-player who made statements considered plainly racist. Whether or not it has anything to do with baseball. Remember John Rocker? Even good players who put up great seasons can screw it all up by saying the wrong thing. This wouldn't be any different if Cabrera was going to games wearing a Che T-Shirt. Although it would be somewhat comical given the recent arbitration business. But I'm glad to hear what he said.
March 1, 200718 yr Actually, what I would find "funny" would be if Miguel Cabrera were a "communist" while at the same time being very happy accepting $7.4 million dollars in salary. If he truly were a "communist" he would forego a salary in order for equal distribution among his fellow teammates. (TONGUE FIRMLY PLANTED IN CHEEK!)
March 2, 200718 yr As long as he keeps improving his glove at thrid and he continues to battle for the NL Batting Title..... I could give a sh*t what he does off the field. If he ever ends up playing for the Braves, then I'll bash him for his ties to Chavez. I sound like a Giants fan apologizing for Barry.
March 2, 200718 yr I suspect if Hugo Chavez says you are his friend...if you know what's good for you and your family, it isn't open to debate I agree with prinmemito: :lol Nicely done. March 2, 200718 yr Yes it is. No it isn't. He's saying that Miggy shouldn't be a communist and if he is he should't voice it because people will get pissed off. Yes, he is saying that. I couldn't give a rat's ass about Miggy's political beliefs. What does this have to do with JrLexusIS33 infringing upon Miguel's right to free speech? It's insane that anyone would get pissed off about it. If you don't like it, fine. But pissed off? That's like me getting pissed off at you for saying you're a Republican. First, it is hardly insane. Communism killed more people in the 20th Century than lived on the planet in the 19th Century. As far as comparing Communism to the GOP, no matter how much you may dislike the GOP, it doesn't have that record of death. Not to single you out, but you demonstrate the abject lack of understanding of the right to free speech. I am certain you are more likely to be able to tell me all five Simpsons characters than you are to tell me all five first ammendment rights (at least without looking it up.) It reminds me of when Tim Robbins gave a speech before the National Press Club complaining how his Free Speech rights were being infringed. If you say something unpopular, and you are reviled publically for it, your free speech rights are no infringed. The only way your free speech rights can be infringed upon is if a government agency silences you without due cause.
March 2, 200718 yr Ok, not technically infringing free speech, but imposing a general viewpoint that stifles free expression and disagreement. This is similar to GW Bush right after 9/11: you're with us or the terrorists, you are unpatriotic if you disagree with me, etc.
March 3, 200718 yr Some people who have lived under communism and that don't support Chavez could change their opinions towards him and even perhaps the Marlins. Of course, this is all theoretical. I do not see why this should blow over into a crisis where the Marlins would get less fan support than they already get if he said that he was pro-Chavez.

This is similar to GW Bush right after 9/11: you're with us or the terrorists, you are unpatriotic if you disagree with me, etc. Not at all infringing on free speech. Everyone has a right to an opinion, and what you say will always affect their opinion of you. It is vastly different to speak your mind and have people pissed off then to live in fear that if you speak your mind you will carted off to prison (or worse). Hell even GW Bush has people pissed off every time he talks. But last I checked, the Michael Moore's & Cynthia McKinneys of the US haven't been tossed into prison or in front of firing squads.

March 3, 200718 yr Ignorance =/= infringing on free speech With the ability to speak freely comes the ability to be criticized. Furthermore, just because you're entitled to speak freely doesn't mean you are entitled to be listened to.

I guarantee that I know much more about the first amendment than you do. I didn't say jrLEXUS doesn't have a right to say whatever he feels like saying. Rather, I think it's wrong of him (or anyone for that matter) to make it seem absolutely wrong to have a particular political position. You are free to criticize the communist position on its substance. In other words, you can disagree with it and say why, but don't make it such that people are afraid to voice their opinions. This is just like Bush trying to cut off dissent after the September 11 Attacks - anyone that disagreed with him was unpatriotic and was helping the terrorists. That's bulls***. That's all I was saying. Ignorance =/= infringing on free speech With the ability to speak freely comes the ability to be criticized. Furthermore, just because you're entitled to speak freely doesn't mean you are entitled to be listened to. Right. I agree with you.

Cause when it comes to a lack of freedom of speech, we are usually talking about people who afraid to speak out and be arrested (or worse). Plenty of people disagreed (and continue to disagree) with Bush, and have been richly rewarded for their conspiracy theory documentaries. What exactly have they had to fear?
