Julio?

Featured Replies

Jorge Julio is absolutely terrible. I'll be very disappointed if we go out and get him, along with giving up a prospect or two

Julio is far from terrible....haha!!

Really shows us what you know. The guy had a 12 K/9 IP strikeout rate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sure his ERA has been high in the past but a good indicator of how good a pitcher is the IP/hits ratio which is also very good for Julio's career.

Julio does not give up many hits. He K's many. Add in the South Florida heat and I see another Benitez for cheap!

Do it in a heartbeat!

Yea, like omg you are so right. His ERA not being below 4.23 since 2002 is less of an important stat than his 12k/9.

last three years his era is 4.92

great, he doesn't give up many hits, he still has a whip hovering around 1.33 or so

he is absolutely terrible and even worse considering his paycheck

Pitching in a pitcher's park will help him greatly....I'm sure you thought Benitez, Todd jones, and Borowski were terrible too before we added them. The South Florida summer heat and our pitcher's park helps ALL pitchers! Especially pitchers will talent and potential like Julio.

you'd be wrong :thumbup

and it doesn't matter where you pitch, if you give batters free passes

The Marlins should want nothing to do with Jorge Julio. I've seen him pitch a bunch and he throws nothing but fastballs waiting to be teed off on.

With the way our bullpen staff has resurrected careers of closers I wouldn't mind taking on shot on him. Granted we can't give up much for him.

I really wish people would stop spewing this nonsense. Here it was taken to a new extreme, as Julio was never really a serviceable closer to begin with.

2002 season with Baltimore: 1.99 ERA, 25 Saves, 1 Hold, 55K's 68 IP, .213 BA against .629 OPS against, please, please explain to me how that adds up to "never really a serviceable closer to begin with" ?

For the right price I'd love to have Julio on this team, he throws very good stuff, his problem has always been the HR ball, but I do believe playing in Joe Robbie will help that. He is still only 28 and he is the type of player who could conceivable be one of those guys who come out of nowhere to have a dominating season as a closer.

He has the stuff for it.

Pro Player is a pitchers park in which Jorge Julio or any average releiver can excell as a closer, but if we do aquire him it'll be on the road where my fear would strike me.

Things could be heating up on a Julio deal. Recently posted in the Herald...

Marlins talking with reliever Julio

BY MIKE PHILLIPS

KISSIMMEE --

The Marlins could be on the verge of adding some help in the bullpen. According to sources, the team is talking to the Arizona Diamondbacks about trading for Jorge Julio, who might be the answer to Florida's closer problem.

Julio, 28, has been in the big leagues for six seasons and has saved 99 games in 124 opportunities in his career. Julio, a right-hander who pitched for the Mets and Diamondbacks last season, saved 16 of 20 last season (15 of 19 for the Diamondbacks) and had impressive strikeout numbers, fanning 88 in just 66 innings while walking 35.

He finished the season 2-4 with a 4.23 ERA, and would give the Marlins some much needed maturity in their young bullpen. He makes $3.6 million, but there is speculation the Marlins would ask Arizona to pick up part of that salary.

Not a big Julio fan and I hope we don't trade a (Marceaux, Vanden Hurk, Winters, J. Dlegado, H. Garcia, J. Garica) for his sevice.

Also.......

The Red Sox are drawing interest from the Marlins and Nationals in Kyle Snyder and the Marlins and Astros in David Murphy.

It appears that the Red Sox are leaning towards keeping Snyder, but they would part with him in part of a deal for a closer. Murphy is almost certainly available for the right amount of relief help. The Astros, though, won't be giving up Chad Qualls in return for a bench player. The Marlins at least would have need of Murphy as a regular. Murphy and Snyder for Taylor Tankersley is a deal the Red Sox would likely jump at

Kyle Synder? please I rather have Mitre, ____fill in the blank instead

Murphy and Snyder for Taylor Tankersley is a deal the Red Sox would likely jump at

uhhh ya think?

I'd be more willing to send Messenger out there over Julio at this point.

damn thats how low we are getting?

...

honestly I wouldnt mind Julio even if just to set up games. Who cares if we lose out a good prospect.

I'm gonna trust the FO on this one, that they're not just going out on a whim here, and that they've actually sat down and done their homework on this guy to the extent that they think he will work in our bullpen. For as many successful pitchers as we've had pass through our organization, I'd like to think that we can trust them enough to know what to look for in a pitcher.

I really don't know what you want me to say. I've been watching the man pitch for years and years and he flat out sucks.

well at least you have a reason to dislike someone this time

Marlins web site says the BoSox interest is smoke and mirrors. Giants have an interest in this guy. The Fish may have to give up Petit in the trade to make it happen and the D'Backs will have to eat some of his salary. Supposedly the Giants are willing to take on more of his salary. Makes one wonder how much of the Giants and Marlins talks on Benitez are having an effect on these talks.

Yeah, it's not like Beinfest's stubborn obsession with Reggie Abercrombie didn't hurt this team or anything.

Amazing how you were able to turn a thread on our pen into a bashing of Reggie. Now tell us all how you managed to see Reggie coming out of the pen to close a game last year when no one else did. Otherwise it's apples and oranges and someone's predictable hatred and constant bashing towards one particular player.

Nah... He was referring to the poster before him suggesting that he will trust Beinfest because he has done his homework on this one

Diamondbacks reliever might cost too much

KISSIMMEE ? The Marlins are looking into Diamondbacks reliever Jorge Julio, but adding the hard-throwing right-hander would require a significant payroll hike by their standards.

Julio is available, but according to one baseball man monitoring him this spring, the Diamondbacks are not inclined to pick up any of the $3.6 million he's owed.

At that price, Julio would be the third-highest-paid Marlin this season, behind Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis. Considering just about anyone the Marlins sent to the Diamondbacks would be making the major league minimum, splurging on Julio would send the payroll well north of the $30 million mark.

Julio, who has been clocked between 92 and 96 mph this spring, does have some history with this front office. On Dec. 22, 2000, the Expos traded Julio to the Orioles for Ryan Minor. Marlins General Manager Admin Beinfest was the Expos' assistant general manager at the time.

As recently as two seasons ago, Julio was widely reported to be among the players the Marlins would have received from the Orioles for A.J. Burnett. That trade deadline deal never materialized and Julio went to the Mets in a package for Kris Benson that offseason.

After the Mets dealt him to the Diamondbacks last May, Julio finished the year with a 3.83 ERA, 25 walks, 55 strikeouts and a .190 opponents' batting average in 442/3 innings. He also converted 15 of 19 save chances, making him 99 for 124 all-time.

For his career, Julio boasts 8.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Don't discount the possibility of the Marlins kicking the tires on Julio as a way of forcing the Giants' hand in an Armando Benitez deal.

The Giants may not have as many trade partners for Benitez as they anticipated. According to the Boston Herald, Red Sox General Manager Theo Epstein said the team will address its closer situation internally. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported the Mariners, once thought to have an interest in Benitez, will not make a bid to reacquire him.

The Giants are willing to pick up all but about $1 million of the $7.6 million Benitez is owed.
