March 28, 200719 yr Perhaps it's neither yes or no, but rather not yet. Batting him eighth gives him a chance to get acclimated to the MLB, and while he doesn't have the protection of Ramirez behind him in the BO, he'll get on, maybe move up a base during the pitcher's AB and then be in scoring position for Ramirez and Uggla, etc. Having our first series against the Nationals could be the perfect introductory experience for him. If I remember, the infield @ RFK is slow and the Nationals are, well, the Nationals. If over time he succeeds, and I'm sure we all want him to, and his OBP is high enough to justify moving into the leadoff spot, then Fredi has some options to try with the lineup. My favorite although I know that's very unpopular here, happens to be moving Jacobs up to third and Ramirez behind Cabrera if MR continues to be the offensive threat he was the latter part of last season, or perhaps moved Uggla down, or everyone down, or gosh so many possibilities open up if De Aza claims the leadoff spot. I would really hate taking away about 80 PAs from Hanley and that's what moving him to the 5th spot means. I think the most likely way De Aza moves up in the order is if he puts up a good OBP, say over .360, and Uggla struggles. In that case I could see De Aza leading off and Hanley hitting 2nd with Uggla moving down in the order.
March 28, 200719 yr Who's MR? Mr. Typo...my bad I would really hate taking away about 80 PAs from Hanley and that's what moving him to the 5th spot means. Polo, like I said, very few people will agree with me on this so I'm not even going to try and dispute your notion. I think the offset is potentially more production from Jacobs and especially Cabrera with little loss from Ramirez but so many people disagree I've already thrown in the towel on this one. Not only that but it's just one of many options available to the manager if De Aza flourishes and if he does, this is a good thing. If Gonzalez never tries my lineup idea and we're winning believe me I could care less. I see value in the idea, no one else does. Life goes on.
March 28, 200719 yr Hey guys, give De Aza a chance. You never know he could really suprise us. Listen to the lady, guys. She called this from day 1. Who's MR? Some OBP speedster at the top, Uggla second, Hanley third, and Miggy cleanup. Followed by Willy, Jacobs, Hermida, and Olivo at 8th.
March 28, 200719 yr I hate it and I'll tell you why: 1) This is just too much too soon for De Aza. For every Dan Uggla story, there's a Logan Kensing head-case that rushing will create. 2) This means we're committed to De Aza for at least a year...at least. I find it slightly nauseating that we can say, with a straight face, that he's our future in center-field. I don't like the fact that it seems we've made our bed with De Aza. I was hoping against all hope that we'd just bite the bullet and trade for a center-fielder, maybe pull Tampa's head out of it's ass or the White Sox or Mariners, but now we're here, and this is going to be the status quo going forward. Terrible terrible decision (and this has nothing to do with De Aza...I'm actually glad to see him get a chance, but the Marlins organizational history suggests that this is a bad move for the team). Hmm. Don't understand the doom and gloom here. And can't understand your logic either. As you said "De Aza is not our CF for the future". . . why do you care if this experiment fails? Sanchez didn't cut it, and we know what we can get out of Reed (which is not much). Are you upset we are starting De Aza or are you upset we haven't traded for a "legit" CF? Because Beinfest is glacial when addressing an error he made. Essentially, it's either you believe De Aza's 2007 is going to be gang-busters, or terrible. Due to the "rush factor" I'm more inclined to believe his '07 will be terrible. Then, knowing Beinfest, we're going to have De Aza for most if not all of the '07 season in center. Ergo, I believe we're going to have another abysmal output from centerfield. So, to conclude, I'd say my frustration is that we didn't get a "legit" center-fielder, and that judging by past comments made about De Aza, we're not going to be getting one any time soon either. Look, I'll be the happiest person in the world if De Aza succeeds or if Beinfest has a quick leash with him, but if I were forced to wager, I'd bet heavily against both. Hey, every team has its problems. It is not a perfect system. Yes, you may feel this move is terrible, terrible, but I try to look at the big picture. Our starting rotation is good, our bullpen is better than it was last year, and our offense is pretty much the same as it was last year. Not bad. So our CF position is not perfect. All around, the team looks solid. I like it. I'm not gonna go cry wolf because of one questionable move. If it doesn't work, there are always options. If it does work, we are that much better.
March 28, 200719 yr Hey guys, give De Aza a chance. You never know he could really suprise us. Listen to the lady, guys. She called this from day 1. Yes, I was probably the first person who believed De Aza could make the team. Give this guy a shot. If he fails then we have Reed to back him up. Reed is just a plane ride away.

Followed by Willy, Jacobs, Hermida, and Olivo at 8th. Again, whip me, beat me...I'm obsessed with getting someone who can provide Cabrera protection in the lineup hitting behind him...if I think the Marlins' FO sinned this off-season it's in not finding a masher to make pitchers pitch to Miggy. I thought last fall it was more important than a centerfielder, more important than almost anything else (take that statement in the figurative sense). And I still do.

March 28, 200719 yr I'm wondering about his tremendous upside? His highest OPS in the minors was .764. Doesn't sound too special... not sure who said he had tremendous upside Ok, fine, no tremendous, but a lot have said he's got some upside, I'm wondering where it is. He's never posted great lines in the minors. Not sure who said even that. Baseball America didn't rate him in the top 30+ Marlins prospects, Sickels has never spoken a word on him, nor has Kevin Goldstein of BP. Obviously their words aren't the be-all end-all but this guy isn't highly touted at all. Of course he can change that with a pretty good April
March 28, 200719 yr There's no way in hell De Aza is ready yet. Oh yea Miss Cleo? Let me guess.....this guy thinks Borchard is a better CFer. Stop the nonsense Benched.

They can't possibly know each system inside and out. I'll go with Beinfest and Mike Hill on this one.

Anyway for what it's worth I had De Aza at #37 and said he could be up early this year. So I win some kind of prize lol
March 28, 200719 yr Holly did call this.....I was on Eric Reed before spring training. Good call Holly.

March 28, 200719 yr Story about the CF job. I was standing by the pen today waiting for the players to come on the field. While I was there these three guys were talking about De Aza and how he is not going to make the team. I was going to band my head on the fence :banghead .
