And our starting CF is.......

Featured Replies

There's no way in hell De Aza is ready yet. But he does have more of an upside than Reed so I guess you might as well take the risk.

I just dont get why people say he isnt ready. It's not like hes jumping from Low A to the pros. And everyone knew that spring training and all the workouts and practices were going to determine the starting CFer.

De Aza out performed all our other candidates. He deserved the spot imo.

Bat De Aza leadoff

If your gonna start him, you might as well give him a chance to do well in front of Hanley instead of rotting away in the 8th spot

Good lord no.

What is batting him 8th going to accomplish??

Theres already questions about him being ready or not, having protection from the pitcher will only stunt the growth that needs to be done

Yes, batting him 1st would probably help him grow as a player. Only problem with that plan though is the fact that we are trying to win games.

So we should actively attempt to sacrifice the '07 season in the name of the development of De Aza?

I think if there is any chance of him not being an automatic out this season, he will have to bat first in the lineup

So then he has no business being here...

I dont think its a crippling sacrifice. IF the organization is content with De Aza as the future in CF, then they should try to do as much as possible to make his adjustment to the majors as easy as possible. Having the likes of Ramirez and Uggla batting behind him will help him to a lot more success than a pitcher.

batting 1st in the lineup isn't going to automatically turn a bad player into an average player. The best place for him in the lineup as of right now is in the 8th slot for the simple fact that he isn't a better hitter than anyone in our lineup right now. If the organization was worried about his development he'd still be in the minors.

Im not against him batting 8th, obviously he'll have to bat there until he proves himself. I just feel that moving him to leadoff helps him more than it hurts anyone else.

Then, knowing Beinfest, we're going to have De Aza for most if not all of the '07 season in center.

I don't think we are comitted to De Aza for a full year. I could be wrong

I hope the org shows patience like they have done with other players. Look at Cabrera. . . When he was brought in, he struggled and batted 200 and most here were clamoring that he be sent to the minors and that he didn't belong, etc. etc.

I'm not claiming De Aza to be Cabrera by any stretch of the imagination, But he needs to be given a fair chance. I say 1/3 of a season is reasonable before we past judgement, unless he looks totaly overmatched on the batters box ala Reggie and Reed

I hate it and I'll tell you why:

1) This is just too much too soon for De Aza. For every Dan Uggla story, there's a Logan Kensing head-case that rushing will create.

2) This means we're committed to De Aza for at least a year...at least. I find it slightly nauseating that we can say, with a straight face, that he's our future in center-field.

I don't like the fact that it seems we've made our bed with De Aza. I was hoping against all hope that we'd just bite the bullet and trade for a center-fielder, maybe pull Tampa's head out of it's ass or the White Sox or Mariners, but now we're here, and this is going to be the status quo going forward.

Terrible terrible decision (and this has nothing to do with De Aza...I'm actually glad to see him get a chance, but the Marlins organizational history suggests that this is a bad move for the team).

Swift I don't think that the "brought the kid up too early" factor is nearly as damaging with hitters as it is with pitchers. I can't quantify that I suppose, just seems to me that a pitcher getting rushed to the bigs who gets shelled could result in confidence issues, while I don't think a young hitter is going to have those kinds of pressures.

I think this is even more the case with someone in De Aza's position, who will have really no expectations laid on him but to go out & play a solid center field and hit a little at the bottom of the order. (That's not to say more time in the minors wouldn't serve him well, I'm sure it would...)

Only 70 games in AA though, that's a big jump for this guy no question.

I'm wondering about his tremendous upside? His highest OPS in the minors was .764. Doesn't sound too special...

not sure who said he had tremendous upside

Ok, fine, no tremendous, but a lot have said he's got some upside, I'm wondering where it is. He's never posted great lines in the minors.

OPS is not a good indicator of upside for someone like De Aza. His value lies in OBP and stolen bases.

Plus, dude, give it a break! The guy is 22, that's right, 22, years old!!!!!!!

Give what a break? I made on post about him.

I guess if he can post a .355 OBP I wouldn't be averse to him batting in front of Olivo and forcing the pitcher to throw fastballs to catch him stealing. Since Olivo can only hit fastballs.

I agree. That's the perfect spot for him, IMO.

Perhaps it's neither yes or no, but rather not yet.

Batting him eighth gives him a chance to get acclimated to the MLB, and while he doesn't have the protection of Ramirez behind him in the BO, he'll get on, maybe move up a base during the pitcher's AB and then be in scoring position for Ramirez and Uggla, etc. Having our first series against the Nationals could be the perfect introductory experience for him. If I remember, the infield @ RFK is slow and the Nationals are, well, the Nationals.

If over time he succeeds, and I'm sure we all want him to, and his OBP is high enough to justify moving into the leadoff spot, then Fredi has some options to try with the lineup. My favorite although I know that's very unpopular here, happens to be moving Jacobs up to third and Ramirez behind Cabrera if *HR* continues to be the offensive threat he was the latter part of last season, or perhaps moved Uggla down, or everyone down, or gosh so many possibilities open up if De Aza claims the leadoff spot.
