RipkenisGod8
Marlins pick center fielder: De Aza By CLARK SPENCER [email protected] The Marlins appear to have picked their starting center fielder. Alejandro De Aza, who has never played above the Double A level, was being congratulated Wednesday morning around the batting cage at the team's spring training facility in Jupiter. Meanwhile, his major competition for the job, veteran outfielder Alex Sanchez, had cleaned out his locker and was gone. Eric Reid, the third contender, will probably be reassigned to Triple A Albuquerque. De Aza has impressed the manager and coaching staff this spring, hitting near .350 during Grapefruit League games. FreshFish
WOW! Bold move. I sensed this a few weeks ago when I heard Fredi talk on a radio interview.
farmer_fran
I'd keep Reed on the team if we're picking De Aza. Reed is the best defensive outfielder in our organization, and he's got nothing left to prove at AAA, and it's not like he's got much upside and needs everyday at-bats. Plus I really don't want to see Alex Sanchez on the team.
yandro
I was pulling for ya baby!!! Let's go Alejandro!!
BIG Z
I believe in Gonzalez, and his decisions. I like this decision, De Aza came hot out of the gates and hasn't slowed down. Hopefully he can continue his success and carry it onto the season. Hard work always pays off, and from what i've heard this man has busted his ass to get here. Where did Alex Sanchez go, the article makes it seem as if he just fumed out of camp, without saying anything.. We signed him to a minor league contract.. The_Godfather
I actually preferred Reed, but I guess it doesn't make a difference. Neither is our CF of the future. At least we don't have to hear from reedismaster.

Plus I really don't want to see Alex Sanchez on the team. Reed will be back if De Aza struggles, but this was his last option, I believe. Reed needs the at bats. He already complained that he can not produce from the bench. With a 25 man roster, De Aza will play most of the time and Reed would have been a pinch runner-which is a spot that there is no room for. De Aza can field and he is also lefty, as is Reed, so there is no need for the extra spot to be used by Reed.

Guest FlummoxedLummox
For a while now Freddi has been saying that he likes having De Aza in the lineup because of his intangibles. Alejandro definitely has the most upside, but hopefully we're not rushing him to the bigs to soon. (I still like this move, because selfishly I want to see what he's able to do.) Reed better learn how to hit off the bench, because that's the only way he's ever going to make it in the majors. His speed and defensive ability makes him the ideal backup outfielder. And I just saw that Sanchez had been released which is great news.

With Hermida starting on the DL if Reed doesn't make the team, I would think Sanchez will. And Reed better learn how to hit off the bench, because that's the only way he's ever going to make it in the majors. His speed and defensive ability makes him the ideal backup outfielder. I'm not surprised. He lit up Double A last season until he got injured. He didn't play for a while and when he came back he was in a funk. If not for his injury he probably would have hit like .320 last season.
Hotcorner
Wow, I'm pleasantly surprised. I hope they're not rushing Aza but he really stepped up this spring & made an impression so maybe he's ready for the job. Surprised they sent Reed down though, figured he'd be a 5th outfielder at least. So let's see, Hammer-Aza-Borchard in the OF, Ross & Gall on the bench and one goes down when Hermida comes back I guess?
FreshFish
Where would he hit? IMO, he should hit
prinmemito
Where would he hit? IMO, he should hit 7 I agree. Get on base for Olivo. Dance around trying to steal bases to distract the pitcher and give Olivo better pitches to hit (presumably more fastballs).
Cambridge Marlin
If 7th which of Olivo or Borch hit 8th?
isd71
Definitely surprising I figured they would just send De Aza down no matter what saying he needed more abs in the minors but he has down well in spring training this year so its worth giving him a shot since the CF spot is wide open if he doesn't do well they can always call up reed or move Borchard to CF after Hermida returns. I am mildly suprprised that Reed was sent down too. I figured that they'd keep him on the roster since he's the only other natural CF left in camp. But I guess they could always play Borchard there in a pinch. I'm glad they are taking the risk with De Aza. The safe choice would have been Reed and few would have questioned it, but De Aza clearly has the better tools and upside. If they can get .260 and 20+ steals and solid D from him this year, it would be a huge improvement from last season.
