Jake Peavy vs Scott Olsen

ESPN.com Preview

Jake Peavy has been close to unhittable in his last two starts, but he and the San Diego Padres have little to show for it.

After losing each of their ace's last two outings, the Padres hope to reward Peavy with a win as they take complete a three-game series with the Florida Marlins at Dolphin Stadium on Sunday.

Peavy (3-1, 2.06 ERA) has been stellar in his last two outings, giving up just three runs and eight hits while striking out 26 over 14 innings. But the right-hander has only one loss to show for it as the bullpen squandered a lead in a 3-2 loss at Arizona on April 25, and the offense failed to help in a 3-2 defeat Monday against Washington in which he allowed three runs in seven innings while striking out 10.

"We're not swinging the bats the best in the world," Peavy told the team's official Web site.

Peavy is 0-2 with a 2.84 ERA in as many starts lifetime at Florida, where he has received just one run of support in those games. He is 2-3 with a 3.69 ERA in five overall starts versus the Marlins.

But San Diego (16-14) may be on the verge of breaking out offensively following a 7-6, 12-inning win Saturday, its third victory in the last four games. The Padres took advantage of two Marlins errors in the ninth inning to erase a two-run deficit, and the seven runs were their most since scoring 10 in a victory at Arizona on April 24.

"We keep it exciting," said Padres manager Bud Black, whose team improved to 6-7 in one-run games. "I think the guys are feeling really good about this win. Which they should."

The Marlins (14-15) had won five of their previous six home games before Saturday's loss and fell to 0-3 in extra-inning games.

"That's how this game is sometimes," said Marlins closer Henry Owens, who blew his first save in five chances. "Sometimes they don't hit the ball very hard, but they find holes. Wasn't our night."

Despite the defensive miscues, Florida's offense again produced as the Marlins reached double digits in hits for the 10th time in 14 games. They are batting .284 as a team during that stretch.

Third baseman Miguel Cabrera is hitting .462 (18-for-39) during a 10-game hitting streak, and is a .400 (32-for-80) career hitter against San Diego.

Scott Olsen (3-1, 5.63) gets the start for Florida. On Monday, the left-hander allowed four runs -- two earned -- in six innings to pick up the win in the Marlins' 9-6 victory over the New York Mets. Olsen limited the Padres to one run and two hits in seven innings in his lone career start against San Diego -- a 2-1 Florida win June 10.

I smell something Fishy. GO MARLINS!!

Peavy the strike out king vs. The strike out team. Oh lord help us.

i'm actually a big jake peavy fan, so i'll be watching this one. you'll probably have lots of luck in this one, peavy tends to suck here, partially due to no run support, but he could fan 20 today.

I think 4th last. We averaged over 18k.

AS with any top-tier pitcher, my key to victory are -

Bunt him to death - make him run

If he's mowing us down around inning 6, make sure he gets on base & cooks out there in the heat

Go Marlins!

I am already sweating just looking at the T.V. I bet everyone is roasting out there.

Well, I hope we pick up someone or find someone to replace Cody. I can not handle 2-3 weeks with Reed starting.

umm...why is brian giles playing second base?

Refresh the gameday, then it change to M Giles.

It might be mistake.

Hey All, finally got some internet back here so here's to hoping it continues to work and I can watch the game...

I think gameday got confused.
