Posted June 6, 200717 yr I remember Rich and Tommy were mentioning that Sergio has thrown like (22/23) consecutive innings without an earned run. How amazing is that? Who would have thought that Mitre would be our best pitcher.
June 6, 200717 yr He was injured most of last year. I am not making excuses for him, but I'm sure pitching while you're not 100% would lead to a couple bad games. He looked awesome in his first start of the season vs. Houston (last year).
June 6, 200717 yr I defended him last year even when he struggled b/c I always felt he had good stuff. Who was it that was always bashing him last year saying how horrendous he is. Â BTW, thank god the nickname 'Trash' didnt stick b/c that was a very stupid nickname. Mitre's nickname should be 'The Conquistador" since he looks like a 15th century Spanish conqueror such as Cortez or Pizarro.
June 6, 200717 yr I always said Mitre had the best chance of pitching a no-hitter this season, but after watching last night's game, anything is possible.

RVH will strike out a lot of guys though. However, Mitre has been striking out more batters lately and the number of groundball outs he forces are a recipre for low hit games, especially if we actually had a defense with better range.

Who would have thought that Mitre would be our best pitcher. I was looking at the game by game long and it only shows a streak of 16 IP without an ER. Where did that 23 IP come from?

June 6, 200717 yr The Conquistador just needs to stay healthy and he can be a very solid pitcher, if not a top pitcher.

June 6, 200717 yr Certainly didn't expect him to come out like this...He was projected to be the 5th starter/back end of rotation(barely beating out an injured Nolasco) during spring training at best and now he's been the ace in terms of performance this season...

Agreed, he has the looks of an spanish conqueror. I sported that look for the last week or so before shaving it off yesterday. It's always a good look for scaring the natives. We need to start referring to him as the Conquistador in threads and such so the nickname sticks. Maybe he'll catch wind of it and like it.
