Yankees catching fire

Featured Replies

Yankees have won 7 in a row and 10 of the last 12. While I dont think they catch boston, I think there is a very good chance they catch Detroit/Cleveland in the wild card race.

I dont like the yankees, but I have said before I believe MLB as a whole is better off when the yankees are a good team.

They were severely underperforming and it was only a matter of time they went on a run.

Of course now all of the idiots are going to say it's because Giambi's not playing. Because having good players not on the field is good.

It has to do with Abreu batting over .450 in the last 2 weeks, Cano playing better, and having a healthy rotation.

just curious...why do you think this is so?

That, and that now Damon is DHing (most of the time), there is someone out there (Melky) who has an arm in center. Damon is hitting a bit better as a DH, and Melky is hitting with some consistent playing time.

I'm rooting for them to pass Boston.

The yankees play in the biggest market and have the largest following. That translates into high ratings and high attendance for the MLB. Whenever they go on the road they draw very well. Even if people are cheering against them (which most are), they are at least interested in what the yankees are doing. When you combine ratings, attendance and publicity, I think its better that the yankees are competative. The same can be argued for the redsox. However, if a team like Cleveland or Toronto is doing awesome, there really isnt that much interest outside of their respective cities.

From 2001 until this season (as far back as espn stats go) they have had the highest road attendance (measured in % of stadium capacity). I am sure that goes back until 97. So for 10 years they have been the best road draw of any team in the league. They have also made the playoffs every year since 96. Atlanta who had a stretch of 12 playoff appearances in a row was only in the mid teens for road attendance.

I'm not saying I think the yankees should make the playoffs or go to the world series every year. But I think the league benefits from them being a competative team, imo.

well said...i guess id rather have them and the red sox stink though...that would be an awesome year...even though fox and espn would still be showing us crappy red sox and yankees games all the time though

longest season. streaks are always going to happen in this sport. i hope the red sox can hang on to first for the year, but with the yankees playing this hot, and probablly pulling off some major trades soon, it should make for a interesting fall.

It's June, I see no reason any decent team couldn't pass another.

Agreed.

The Sox are not the overly superior team most everyone was trying to make them out to be earlier when they tried to verbally bury the Yankees simply because they are the Yankees.

The Sox have glaring weaknesses in the lineup and rotation.

I think the trading deadline is going to be incredibly interesting this season.

I agree with both of you, but its hilarious to hear people (in NE) count the yankees out.

Shouldn't be surprising.

So easy to kick teams/people when they're down and then run away when they're up.

Comes with the the territory for the Skanks though, I just hate people who hate teams for nothing other than they are good and/or spend money. So lame.

Do you think the redsox lead is safe?

Depends what your definition of safe is.

Can we be caught? Yes.

Do I think we can win the division? Yes.

Do I think we are better than the Yankees? Yes.

The Sox are at a weird point right now. In my mind they have the potential to be a very good team or an extremely mediocre team that could miss out on the playoffs altogether. Seems like a cop out but their inconsistent play is a tad unsettling.

We need Tito to manage the line-up much better (consolidate the suck at the end of the line-up and put a better bat inbetween, bat Youks 1st or 2nd, give Pedroia consistent PT) and more consistently than he has to get some consistent run production which has been really lacking lately.

Lots of little things as well but I'm not going to drone on and on.

The bottom line is the pieces are there but the production is not and until that changes counting anyone out or making any team a late spring/early summer 'lock' is ludicrous.

I saw the title of the topic and my first thought was if only they would catch on fire. That said they're only 4.5 back in the wild card and as big a Red Sox fan as I am I knew they couldn't with that line-up play as bad as they were all season.

It really was only a matter of time. It would be hard for any team to compete with the incredible quantity of injuries that the Yankees were delt early on. At one point, SP's 1-4 were all on the DL at once!

Also, playing the Pirates and DBacks doesn't hurt... :thumbup

Yeah, Texas could single-handedly decide no less than 3 divisions.

If you mean Teixeira, I'd disagree.

If you mean Gagne, I could see it.

That series alone may totally change my view on interleague.

How so?

Shows an extreme example of the unbalanced interleague schedule.

Skanks got the Pirates at home.

The Sox get the Padres away.

That series alone may totally change my view on interleague.Hey - Boston plays the DBacks, the Rockies and the Giants [three consecutive basement team series]. At least the Yanks have to play the Mets. It averages out.

I'd rather play the Pads than the Mets right now.

...as do you guys, just not consecutively.

The Sox play the Braves (more travel, just two games back of the Mets).

The only differences in their interleague is

a home/away series with Atlanta/New York

and the already stated Pirates / Padres series.

Blalock and/or Gagne to the Phillies.

Teixeira to the Braves or Yankees.

Sosa back to the Cubs.

Heck, even if they decide to move Michael Young he'd be a hell of an addition for the Mets at second-base.

I'm all for the Skanks trading for Teixeira.

It'd be a rental (unless Rodriguez leaves) in their lowest spot of need, they'd give up talent, and it could prevent them from trading for a good reliever.

I couldn't envision Teixeira going to the Yankees unless Gagne comes too.

Plus, doesn't Teixeira have one year left with a no-trade? I was under the impression Teixeira wasn't going anywhere unless Boras gets him an extension with the acquiring team.

Either way, way too much forethought on this issue.
