June 19, 200719 yr I know that we need to wait for the Univ of Miami to make up its mind where they will play their football games in the future before any serious talks can proceed, but DAMN! No news for several weeks is driving me nuts! Does anyone know anything about the behind the scene talks? Is the County Commission still leaning toward the OB site if the Canes move to Dolphin Stadium? What if they don't move, are they then OK with the downtown site or do they prefer "sticking" the new stadium next to the OB anyway? How are the plans coming along to find a new site for the proposed children's courthouse? Have they found an alternative site that everyone can live with? How is the funding gap going to be breached? Does the new tax cut proposal just passed in the State legislature special session put a large enough strain on the local government's budget to derail the whole plan? Someone in this forum must know something! I don't ask for much, just a bit of info to keep our hopes up would be nice.
June 19, 200719 yr I would term this a cool off period. The County/City and The Marlins/MLB have entirely different views on the site and structure. Both agree on the funding for the most part. The University of Miami is taking its sweet time to decide and the City really can't do a thing on any front until UM decides what they want. The City has a commitment to UM.
June 19, 200719 yr when is UM's deadline? None yet. Shalala has been ordered to play ball with both DS and the City at the same time. The city brought out a plan, last ditch, to make UM happy at the OB. It would all depend on a $45 million tax rebate for UM.
June 19, 200719 yr UM has said it will make a decsion by the end of the summer, so I would hope that they announce their plans sometime in the next two months.

Hope Da U takes it, better place to play at anyways even if I will miss the old girl As I recall the plan offered by the city to UM was just an awful deal for the school. The building would get renovated for something like $206 million or something, but they wouldn't get any revenue from the suites and they would pay more in rent. It seems some of the UM board members are having trouble letting go of the past and ordered Shalala to keep trying with both options. I doubt that they would ever agree to the deal the city offered though. It would be a bad business decision, but we'll see what happens.
June 19, 200719 yr I'm going on a limb and say that UM will decide to stay at the OB. If they thought it would be better for them to play at DS they would have announced that last month. Going past a certain time point, the likelihood of a "Stay at OB" scenario happening becomes more plausible.
June 22, 200719 yr Some clippings just confirming what we know.....everything is stalled waiting on UM.
June 24, 200719 yr What verification is there that the funding is done? I thought we were still like 30 million apart? Has that been settled?
June 24, 200719 yr What verification is there that the funding is done? I thought we were still like 30 million apart? Has that been settled? Funding isn't done. Nothing can be settled until UM is done with their process. The City is on the hook for UM....that is why nothing has happened and all is stalled.

June 25, 200719 yr Still baffles me how a private school that is not even in the city of Miami has so much support for public funding.
June 25, 200719 yr Still baffles me how a private school that is not even in the city of Miami has so much support for public funding. Keep in mind, all the years of those palm trees and the skyline and the cruise ships being shown all over the country-and when they say, from the ORange Bowl in Miami, its the University of Miami (not Coral Gables) tells you that around the country the association is Miami. And just as valuable are the numerous departments that are in the city-the Medical center, the research facilities etc., that have been in the news whereby the U has been raiding, if you will, top research scientists from around the country to their new genetics research facility, and the spinal cord research etc. amongst other things. These may not be on the sports page, but it is big. Maintaining the U and the positives that are brought goes far beyond just football.
June 25, 200719 yr I have no problem with U of M. I do, however, have a problem with a private university getting 9 figures from public funds to renovate a decrepit stadium for 6 games a year.
June 27, 200719 yr Author Miami Herald article (6/27/2007) below. Looks like we still have to wait a while longer for a final decision. Canes stuck in stadium limbo By BARRY JACKSON bjackson@MiamiHerald.com The University of Miami, which had hoped to determine its future football home by now, has been haggling with Dolphin Stadium over contract terms, and the Orange Bowl remains in play in the late stages. Dolphin Stadium was once a heavy favorite. Now, one informed UM person said it's a ''little better than 50-50'' that UM will move there. The perspective, naturally, is more optimistic on the Huizenga Holdings side, where one official fully expects the Canes will move north. For months, UM officials said they would be very surprised if the Hurricanes stayed at the OB beyond 2009, when its lease ends. But in the past month: ? Several key UM trustees indicated a preference to stay at the OB, and that the Dolphin Stadium deal must be perfect for UM to move (which it's not yet). UM president Donna Shalala will make the decision. ? Dolphin Stadium put its proposal in writing in a document that topped 60 pages. Initially, there was a point of contention on virtually every page. Now, there are about a dozen unresolved issues, most concerning how revenue will be split. UM is prepared to do a deal but indicated privately last week it will move on if the lingering issues can't be worked through soon. ? The city of Miami made an offer earlier this month, which is far from perfect, but closes the revenue gap. One official said UM still would make about $1.5 million more annually by moving to Dolphin Stadium -- less than the $4 million-plus gap between Dolphin Stadium's offer and UM's current OB deal. One of UM's concerns is that $45 million of the $206 million budgeted by the city for OB renovations would come from a not-yet-secured historic tax credit. City Manager Pete Hernandez said the city won't apply for the credit before UM commits to staying because it doesn't want to restrict its options with the OB land. ''It looks attainable,'' he said. During the past three weeks, UM has been negotiating only with Dolphin Stadium. ''I haven't heard a peep from UM,'' Hernandez said, adding the city has made its final offer. Dolphin Stadium agreed to UM's request for 1) a long-term lease (longer than 15 years) and 2) to attempt to sell naming rights, because UM prefers not to play in a facility named Dolphin Stadium.
June 27, 200719 yr Instead of selling Naming rights why not name it back to Joe Robbie Stadium and gives the man some damn respect for what he did for the community of south florida and sports down here. I think they will resolve their "issues" now that the length of time has been resolved
