yeah bro I feel alot better today now that its over, picked my fall classes except the science, because I was going for intro to genetics but the class doesn't show up and the ppl there said that means that they aren't going to offer it or something...so now i have to pick one of these intros: microbiology, botany, or marine biology...which do you guys recommend is the easiest/funnest?

Have you started looking into on campus activities like club and greek life?

Nah bro not yet, these past days have just been overwhelming so Im going to cool down a bit before going into that...Are you attending FIU?Yes sir.

You should go to Welcome Week the week before school starts if you're interested in club activities. Or, if you want to know about the right club, you could just ask me!

lol lemme guess, you are one of the peer advisors right?

i dont think he can be that cheery at 8 in the morning :lol

oh lol I thought they were cool, at least mines, I had a girl name Jenniffer she was fun and wasn't annoying. And a bunch of other peer advisors looked cool too, like some girl whose last name was Toca.

during my grad school orientation, i received my first assignment.

that was beyond thrilling.

so i got another reason to avoid grad school for as long as possible.

i hated orientation, i was sleepy as hell and there are all these cheery ass peer advisors trying to get you do all these idiotic chants. thats all i really remember from mine, that and registering the next day for classes and taking my ID picture.

oh and i went wearing a UM jersey that first day without even thinking and lets just say i got called out by some of the peer adviosrs.

Haha! That wasn't the only time you got called out. :p

oh yeah i forgot about that. :lol

im still sure the whole team ran a train on her.

Jenniffer was my peer adviser too! She was really cool. What was your group name? We were Jenniffer's Kazachstan All-Stars. My friends was in Toca's terradactyls.

If youre talking about this Fall semester its too late. I dont know about not having enough money but I do know the deadline was a few weeks ago.

FIU braces for hard financial times:

Qualified students will be turned away

MIAMI, FL (July 13, 2007) – Florida International University President Modesto A. Maidique announced this week that admissions and non-faculty hiring will be frozen, and some programs may be eliminated to meet a four to 10 percent state budget cut.

“In practice, this means that perfectly qualified students will be denied admission to FIU, said Maidique. “The university – and the university system – will not be able to keep up with the growing number of college-ready graduating seniors from South Florida.

The budget cut comes as a result of lower than expected tax revenues for the state. As a money saving measure, earlier this week the Florida Board of Governors, the governing body of the public universities in the state, instituted the first-ever system-wide freshmen enrollment cap.

“The situation is critical, said Maidique, who has seen numerous budget cuts in his 20 years as president. “After years of cuts, we are at the breaking point. In order to remain true to our educational mission and in line with our commitment to quality, we are going to have to turn away students.

FIU will need to identify a minimum budget cut of $9.4 million of its $234 million recurring state appropriation. The cuts can go as high as 10 percent; a $23 million reduction for FIU. A four percent cut is equivalent to all the money FIU received this year to partially fund 1100 additional full time students (FTEs).

“The cut wipes out all the new money. It forces us to find new ways to pay for new students who are already here, faculty promotions and the higher cost of the basic infrastructure such as rising utilities costs, said CFO and Senior Vice President Vivian Sanchez.

Maidique said he is committed to making sure these cuts do not further erode the quality of education at FIU and that the university does not get off track in its quest to become one of the top 10 urban research universities in the country. With these principles in mind, Maidique is appointing a President’s Budget Stabilization Task Force consisting of faculty, administrators and students. With input from the university community, the task force will be asked to evaluate programs based on their contribution to undergraduate education and the research mission of the university. The university must have a plan for cutting 4 percent of its budget by the State Revenue Estimating Conference scheduled for Aug. 1st.

The Florida State University System has sustained cuts amounting to half a billion dollars over the last 20 years, Maidique explained. These cuts, together with one of the lowest tuitions in the country, have led to the second-worse student-to-faculty ratio in the nation. FIU has one of the highest ratios in the state, with 38.8 students per full time faculty member.

Years of cuts have resulted in diminished funding per student. In 1997, FIU had 16,824 FTEs with a state expenditure of $10,146 per student in current dollars. This fall FIU is expecting 25,161 FTEs with a state expenditure per student of $9,430.

“We are going to work very hard to make sure that our current students and the students we accept in the coming years have an excellent chance to take the classes they need to graduate, said Maidique. “We are moving to fill as many as 80 faculty positions vacated through attrition.

Good thing for those who just got in....

Well, that'll inadvertently raise the FIU bar

It's happening everywhere in the state. Schools aren't making money, so they're going to start taking less students. If you're applying to college next year, you may get screwed over.

Just crazy considering how much everything cost at a University!!
