July 23, 200718 yr yeah, i really don't know about willingham leading off. either hanley should, or if he's hurt alfredo should in his place. i've seen you say before that the 5 hole leads off more innings than any other spot outside of leadoff -- why is this, and how did you figure it out? It's just one of those fun overly publicized stats like "a leadoff walk scores 82% of the time." It's not all that unbelievable either, when you think about it, generally your best hitter hits 3rd, meaning more times than not your 4 hole hitter gets up. The 4 hole isn't usually associated with speed, or high-quality contact, it's the prototypical slugger. Hence a high strikeout or DP probability. So, there's your 5 hole hitter coming up to lead off the next inning. CONCLUSION: A leadoff batter who walks does NOT "always score"; the walk has the same effect as the other ways to reach first base. Reach Score Freq 1B 183468 72841 .397 2B 48364 30961 .640 3B 6573 5753 .875 HR 27205 27205 1.000 BB 82637 33002 .399 HP 6217 2543 .409 INT 81 22 .272 E 12105 5298 .438 http://www.diamond-mind.com/newsletter/en021213.htm Also, the player to lead off the most innings aside from the leadoff batter is the 4 hole but not by any significant value over the 5th or even the bottom of the lineup. The only one that leading off really affects is the first batter as he has a 100 % chance to lead off at least once a game, which is usually 20-25% of the time. Damn those infernal statistics! My faith in Tim McCarver and Joe Morgan has been shattered.
July 24, 200718 yr Ramirez Hermida Cabrera Uggla Willingham Jacobs Amezaga Olivo P I personally love that line-up more than any others I have seen so far.
July 24, 200718 yr And Linden again starting over Hermida in RF ughh and a guy with a career OBP against LHP of .247 leading off, yeah! Mezzy should try just hitting from the leftside instead of swapping.

July 24, 200718 yr Jacobs should be batting 3rd in this line up! Jacobs Batting #3 .321 43 165 24 53 16 0 10 23 11 26 .360 .600 .960 Batting #4 .238 63 235 29 56 14 1 7 30 20 58 .297 .396 .693 Batting #5 .268 50 183 20 49 13 0 7 33 19 47 .337 .454 .790 Cabs Batting #3 .307 317 1202 211 369 80 2 65 237 155 253 .389 .539 .928 Batting #4 .336 245 916 160 308 69 5 48 171 102 200 .403 .580 .983 These stats say it all for Jake and Cabrera for that matter. When we made our push last year Jake was in the 3 hole and Cabs was 4th. Then all of a sudden we changed them around. Although Jake has a small sample size he did well with Cabrera behind him. Cabrera is best in the 4th spot as his career stats show. He is higher in almost every category and has a large sample in each spot to back it up. Jake a very aggressive hitter will see a lot more fast balls with Cabrera behind him and that benefits him and the team. Hit Jake 3rd and see if we don?t go on a run.
