September 13, 200719 yr If we had a chance of being a .500 team and having some sense of respectability, I'd agree. Unlike the NBA and NFL, with how hard it is to get into the playoffs in the MLB, it isn't just about the playoffs. If you're a small market team and have a respectable season, that's still a 'good' year. But we're going to be one of the worst 5 teams in the majors regardless. Might aswell try and get the best talent in the draft out of it.
September 13, 200719 yr Why the heck is everyone wanting us to LOSE? I realize we could get a #1 draft pick, but as fans, aren't we supposed to want the team to WIN? In 1998 we were the worst team in all of baseball, and we were rewarded with the #2 pick(back then it was alternating). Do you think it would have been better if we finished as the 4th,5th or 6th worse team in baseball? Maybe. We would have won a few more games. Hooray. But lets look what happened. The 1999 draft had two studs, everyone knew it (The 2008 draft as of right now has 2 studs in Alvarez and Matusz) So in 1999 with the 2nd pick we knew we were either getting Josh Hamilton or Josh Beckett. It was all up to the Devil Rays. We get Josh Beckett and 4 years later he is winning the deciding game of the World Series against the New York Yankees with a dominating performance. So yea, sure we "should be" rooting for the Marlins to win games, but I want the Marlins to win World Series and contend. If we finish as the 4th,5th or 6th worse team we end up with either Eric Munson, Corey Myers, B.J. Garbe or Josh Girdley who went 345 and 6, respectively. My question is the same...WHO????? Basically the point is - if aren't the worst team in baseball in 1999, we don't win the World Series in 2003. Simple as that. So Please, I am sick and tired of people hoping for a few more meaningless wins when it could be the difference between a World Series and mediocrity in the future.
September 13, 200719 yr Race For The Bottom Posted Sep. 11, 2007 11:30 am by John Manuel Filed under: Draft Dope While watching pennant races is fun, try watching the race to the bottom of the standings?and thus the race to the top of the 2008 draft. That race is getting almost as interesting as the one at the top of the National League Central. The Devil Rays have had the worst record in the majors for most of the year, especially since they lost 25 of 30 games sandwiched around the all-star break. However, the Rays have won 13 of their last 17 games to improve to 61-83. Not only are they within nine victories of their best wins total in franchise history, but they have found company at the bottom of the standings. The White Sox and Marlins have joined the Rays in the race for the top pick and also sport 61-83 marks. The Astros, Orioles and Royals are in hot pursuit, as Roscoe P. Coltrane might say, with 81 losses apiece. Any of those six clubs could finish with the majors? worst record. None of those clubs is playing as well as the Rays?the Royals have a six-game losing streak, the White Sox are coming off a 9-20 August, the Astros and Orioles have lost seven games already this month . . . it?s a motley group, and it?s more and more likely that the schedule-maker will determine which bottom-feeder finishes first in what we?ll call the Pedro Alvarez sweepstakes. Here, the schedule does not favor the Rays. As hot as they are, they have series remaining with the Red Sox (five games) and Yankees, plus road trips to Seattle and the Angels. The aggregate winning percentage of remaining Rays foes is a whopping .571. The Orioles are the only team anywhere close to the Rays in the degree-of-difficulty category, though the Marlins could make a run. Here?s the breakdown of the rest of the teams? remaining strength of schedule (SOS), expressed as winning percentage of remaining opponents: RACE FOR THE BOTTOM Team ----- Losses ----- SOS Marlins ----- 83 ------- .522 White Sox --- 83 -------- .512 Orioles ----- 81 -------- .534 Royals ------ 81---------- .508 Astros ------ 81 --------- .486 Pirates ------ 80 -------- .509 http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=235

September 14, 200719 yr Why the heck is everyone wanting us to LOSE? I realize we could get a #1 draft pick, but as fans, aren't we supposed to want the team to WIN? Some of us feel by losing NOW we WIN in the future :thumbup
September 14, 200719 yr Orioles with a big win today, and D-Rays up 5-0 in the fourth. Please-oh-please don't blow this, Rays bullpen.
September 14, 200719 yr Orioles with a big win today, and D-Rays up 5-0 in the fourth. Please-oh-please don't blow this, Rays bullpen. They need at least a dozen run cushion to not blow it. The Rays being up 5-0 is like an average team losing 3-1.
September 14, 200719 yr You're not kidding Combined bullpen line so far 1IP 2H 4BB 2ER Man on First and Second, no outs in the bottom of the 8th with a 4 run lead. Dan wheeler now brought in Just 6 more outs guys. You can do this.

September 14, 200719 yr f*** YOU DAN WHEELER 7-7 now, bottom 8th with two outs and the go ahead run on second base for SEA Though I thin the 7th run was bulls***, he looked out at the plate with the naked eye (they haven't shown a replay of it), should be out of the inning :| :| :| D-Rays bullpen line: 1.2 IP, 6H, 5BB, 6 ER

September 15, 200719 yr Im really starting to like Justin Smoak from South Carolina. Im actually starting to like him as much as Alvarez.
September 15, 200719 yr Im really starting to like Justin Smoak from South Carolina. Im actually starting to like him as much as Alvarez. meh. I don't get that excited over college 1B when it comes to the draft. Especially drafting that early. He does have a nice bat though.
September 19, 200719 yr Reported during the Devil Rays game that James Shields is going to be shut down the rest of the year......ugh. Anyone know how tie-breakers are calculated?
September 19, 200719 yr Reported during the Devil Rays game that James Shields is going to be shut down the rest of the year......ugh. Anyone know how tie-breakers are calculated? Don't quote me on this, but I think they calculate it by your record the previous year. So if we tie with the Drays they would get the #1 pick since they had a worse record than us last year.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but that'd make no sense. It'd be the rich getting richer, which is what the draft is meant to guard against. Oh well, MLB is so ass-backwards with most of this stuff that it wouldn't surprise me. Still, I thought that the league play was the breaker. But, with it no longer being NL/AL/NL/AL alternating, it makes little sense.

September 19, 200719 yr I've been trying to find the answer on google and MLB's site and haven't found anything. You would think atleast something would be out there. I'm guessing coinflip, since home field advantage for tiebreaker playoff games is done by coinflip.
September 23, 200719 yr I think the game the other day, when the Rays had an off day and we won, basically killed our chances. That cost us a game. We lose, we're only two back. And with 7 games left, there's a slight chance of the Rays being able to win two more than us. But three? Tonight's just proof that the devil rays can't win three games with their bullpen. Thank you Al Reyes, assf*cker. Goodbye Pedro Alvarez. :'( Maybe they'll get a pitcher? :|
September 23, 200719 yr Who cares if we get the number 1 overall draft pick or the 3rd overall, it's all about the scouting and development of the players selected. I highly doubt anyone selected would be ready by next ST. Lets get the players we have ready for the upcoming season . A rotation needs to be pulled together, a CF needs to be groomed. A catcher needs to be developed...I don't see the Marlins doing any of this, I am so frustrated with Fredi and Kranitz right now
September 23, 200719 yr There's more than just one year of baseball. And Alvarez is expect to take the Teixeira route...one year of minors than be ready. In other words, he'd be ready for 2009. You know what else is in 2009? Cabrera's last year of arbitration. It's unlikely he'll be with us, probably will be traded in the offseason prior to the season. Losing Cabrera would be a lot easier to take if we had a stud like Alvarez taking over for him at third.
