August 26, 200719 yr What's the point? Even if we do get the first pick, odds are the Marlins will pass up the best available player because Loria and Samson don't want to open their wallets.

I don't know if this is necessarily true. I don't think they'd pull a Matt Bush on us and pass up on a Verlander.
August 26, 200719 yr Change the Thread title. 2008 #2 Draft Pick Race Division. We couldn't take away Ray' spot.
August 26, 200719 yr The White Sox should be embarrassed with that payroll. In addition, the D-Rays showed how bad you can be with no bullpen.
August 26, 200719 yr The Rays are a lock for the 1st pick. They are the quintessential sucky team in professional sports.
August 26, 200719 yr Author The Rays are a lock for the 1st pick. They are the quintessential sucky team in professional sports. I don't know, I've seen this team pull miracle before. Maybe this year they will pull the other kind of the miracle.
September 6, 200719 yr If this were the race for the top NBA pick, I'd probably be more interested...but baseball is probably the most random sport when it comes to picking the future studs....especially with all the development players have in the minors.
September 6, 200719 yr If this were the race for the top NBA pick, I'd probably be more interested...but baseball is probably the most random sport when it comes to picking the future studs....especially with all the development players have in the minors. Bullocks. NBA and MLB have the same amount of studs/busts in the top 3 picks I'd wager. Baseball might be a tad higher because of the injuries that occur to pitchers, but we will get a stud in this upcoming draft if we pick top 3. As a sample, just look at the last ten years of #1 overall picks in MLB - David Price - Don't know yet, but I'd bet will be a stud. Luke Hochevar - Don't know yet, was a money pick. Justin Upton - Will be a stud Matt Bush - Awful, money pick. Huge Bust. Should have could have taken Justin Verlander, Stephen Drew, Jered Weaver or Homer Bailey. Delmon Young - Hasn't put up huge numbers yet, but I still think he will be a stud. Bryan Bullington - Bust. Should have taken the top HS guy, BJ Upton who went #2. Joe Mauer - Stud. Adrian Gonzalez - very good player. Josh Hamilton - Would be a stud if it weren't for all that he went though. Looks like he will still wind up a very good player. Pat Burrell - Very good player. So in the last ten years, you only have two busts, one because of a stupid, horrible money pick that every team knew was horrible at the time and one because of injuries. In the NBA draft you have also have two major busts in Kwame Brown and Michael Olowokandi and a mix of studs and very good players. All drafts are a crap shot, but if you are picking in the top 2-3 picks, it is a LOT harder to screw it up, and in baseball's case you almost have to knowingly screw it up by not picking the best player because of money.

September 6, 200719 yr Yeah, Matt Bush was a very surprising pick when he went #1. He has already failed as an infielder, and has started to take up pitching.
September 6, 200719 yr Yeah, Matt Bush was a very surprising pick when he went #1. He has already failed as an infielder, and has started to take up pitching. So what you're saying is when the off-season "trade Dontrelle/Miggy" hysteria begins Matt Bush will be a popular name among Padres fans to centerpiece a trade for either Marlins player.
September 6, 200719 yr I've been tracking this myself and sending a friend updates, glad to see someone else found something to root for as well. The #1 pick this year is a great prize because of Pedro Alvarez. For those who say we won't pick the top player available,,,,we didn't exactly cheap out with Dominguez last year, and we picked REALLY high ceiling talent in 2005 with all those 1st round pitchers. We're NOT a budget drafting team. We pick the best players, and have for years. He's a High avg, High discipline, High POWER 3b from Vanderbuilt who already has been a 1st team ALL American his Freshman and Sophmore seasons. He's currently the top hitter on the USA National team, and will no doubt have an Alex Gordon / Mark Teixeira kinda season. He'll likely be the top talent available, and will be able to help the Marlins QUICKLY. I'm talking like one season of minor league ball. Yes he's a 3b, but you can put him at First, or Left or Right field or whatever. He's an IMPACT bat, and has been described as a ONCE IN A GENERATION TALENT by Baseball Prospectus. We need that first pick. Getting swept by Washington was HUGE. Lets hope Philly mops the floor with us as well
September 6, 200719 yr Mudcats he sounds like the logical choice but for Dominguez. Does this mean these two battle it out in the minors and whoever loses the 3rd base position, will be the future at 1st or gets traded ?
September 6, 200719 yr Mudcats he sounds like the logical choice but for Dominguez. Does this mean these two battle it out in the minors and whoever loses the 3rd base position, will be the future at 1st or gets traded ? From everything I have read so far, Dominguez is the far superior prospect at 3B, defensively. The thought with many scouts is that Alvarez will move to LF in the pros. I've read some say that he is a plus defender, but he will grow out of it. Impact bat though for sure. The consolation prize of picking second will be pretty sweet as well, the way it looks right now it will be Brian Matusz, a tall LHP out San Diego. Throws a Mid 90s FB with a +change +curve and excellent command. Struck out 163 and walk only 37 in 123 innings last year. College stats don't mean much, but they mean more for the pitcher IMO.

Their bullpen is just so bad and they have the strongest strenth of schedule left. They should have won these past two games against the Red Soxs but their bullpen is just blowing it for us. Orioles also have a stronger strength of schedule then us, but we have the third highest. But...when you consider the Mets are going to clinch the east soon, they're not going to be going 100% against us. Pray the Mets start losing so they have a reason to beat us. Orioles, Royals, and Stros have been horrible lately and moving on up

The White Sox and Royals play 4 games against each other, which helps us.
September 13, 200719 yr Why the heck is everyone wanting us to LOSE? I realize we could get a #1 draft pick, but as fans, aren't we supposed to want the team to WIN?
