Olivo punches Reyes, benches clear in Marlins-Mets fight

By MIKE FITZPATRICK

NEW YORK - Florida catcher Miguel Olivo charged across the diamond and threw a punch at Jose Reyes, setting off a bench-clearing brawl between the Marlins and New York Mets on Saturday.

First, the teams spilled onto the field when Florida pitcher Harvey Garcia threw behind Luis Castillo in the fifth inning. Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson was incensed, pointing angrily toward the Marlins as the benches and bullpens emptied.

No punches were thrown, however, with both teams mostly just milling close to each other near home plate. Florida third baseman Miguel Cabrera came down to settle former teammate Castillo, who had walked toward the mound with his arms spread wide and his bat in his hand.

After a brief delay, the game resumed. Castillo walked and Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez came out to make a double switch.

It appeared Reyes, who was on third base, was jawing with Olivo, who was standing on the mound as the pitching change was made. Suddenly, Olivo charged at Reyes and took a swing that failed to connect.

Mets third base coach Sandy Alomar held off Olivo, and Cabrera grabbed hold of Reyes as both teams came pouring out onto the field. There was plenty of pushing and shoving -- New York backup catcher Mike DiFelice was in the middle of a heated scrum -- but it appeared no other punches were thrown.

Marlins coach Bo Porter pulled Reyes away from the tussle as the Shea Stadium crowd chanted ``Jo-se, Jose, Jose, Jose, Jo-se, Jo-se!''

Olivo was ejected from the game. Reyes was not. He scored on David Wright's single, increasing New York's lead to 10-0.

After coughing up a big lead in the NL East, the Mets needed a win Saturday or a Phillies loss to avoid being eliminated from the postseason. They had lost five straight, eight in a row at home and 11 of 15 overall.

The Marlins might have been irritated that star shortstop Hanley Ramirez appeared to be hit by a pitch earlier in the game, though he wasn't awarded first base.

Ramirez writhed in pain after John Maine's pitch seemed to hit him on the left hand in the fourth inning, but plate umpire C.B. Bucknor ruled it a foul ball off the knob of the bat. Ramirez, the NL Rookie of the Year last season, knelt on the ground as he was checked by a trainer.

After a brief delay while he gathered himself, Ramirez struck out swinging on the next pitch and lost his grip on the bat, which sailed past third base into shallow left field.

X-rays on Ramirez's left hand were negative. He was replaced at shortstop in the bottom of the fourth by Robert Andino.

He would've if Alomar hadn't gotten in his way..

Surprised Olivo didn't just run thru alomar to get to reyes..

i was actually a little aggravated by Cabrera freely jawing with Reyes after the incident...I know Cabrera was one of the peacekeepers but I still believe in taking sides and defending your teammates whether you agree with them or not...if im Olivo I get on Cabrera's case for that, but maybe thats just me

I missed that. Was it friendly jawing as in smiling/laughing or that sort of thing?

BK doesn't mess around :D

At one point, tiny Marlins pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim became what Marlins reliever Lee Gardner jokingly termed ''a Korean backpack,'' as he hopped aboard Mike DiFelice piggy-back-style, with his arms around the neck of the Mets' third-string catcher, who tried unsuccessfully to shake free while the 5-9, 175-pounder held on for the ride.

With Olivo on the mound during a pitching change and Reyes on third base, the two kept up the banter until Olivo challenged Reyes to a fight. Reyes playfully went along.

"When he put his glove down and ran after me, I said, 'He's not kidding,'" Reyes said.

Olivo charged Reyes and unsuccessfully tried to deliver a right hook around teammate Miguel Cabrera and Mets third-base coach Sandy Alomar.

The predictable mayhem ensued. Sergio Mitre got tangled up with Oliver Perez. Byung-Hyun Kim had Mike DiFelice in a headlock.

"He said he was joking," Cabrera said. "I think he was joking, but in reality it wasn't a good moment to be playing around and for them to be talking back and forth. ... Things were hot and it was just a reaction. [Reyes] was saying things in jest. I told him to leave it alone. He didn't pay attention. He kept talking and Olivo got mad."

With manager Fredi Gonzalez on the mound making a double switch, Olivo unexpectedly made a beeline for Reyes.

"I never had a problem with him," Olivo said. "He's a good player. He's an exciting player, but he cannot show me up like that. ? I'm a man. I need to be a man and take care of myself. I saw everybody [on the Mets] tried to get me. I'm there. I'm not scared of anybody. I can take anybody, anywhere. I don't care."

Gonzalez chalked it up to boys being boys. Randolph said something got lost in the translation between the two players, adding: "Olivo's always been a little bit of a hot head. I don't know what he was thinking, really."

Olivo said Reyes deserves to be suspended for picking up Olivo's helmet and chucking it at him, an act Olivo said the umpires didn't see.

"I respect everybody," Olivo said. "He needs to respect me."

Olivo is The Man!

I want BK back.

I don't care if he's barely a serviceble 5th starter and would demand a salary more than he is worth.
