? Marlins pitcher Anibal Sanchez ''is upset,'' his agent said, after a meeting with team management did not resolve a dispute over whether he was injured before or after his May 4 demotion to the minors. The issue has financial stakes, and agent Dan Lozano will proceed with a grievance against the team.

''The Marlins are essentially questioning his integrity. That's disappointing,'' Lozano said. The Marlins hope Sanchez will return from shoulder surgery by spring training, or soon after. Lozano indicated he's ``ahead of schedule.''

? The Marlins know they need more veteran leaders, and for reasons beyond performance. One Marlins person said there was too much childish behavior from several players (including on team flights), and no consistent policing of it. One of the first issues a coach from an opposing team brought up about the Marlins was lack of discipline.

Anibal should win the grievance, just another example of the organization being penny wise and pound foolish. Shame.

I think from a relations standpoint the Marlins should give him the money biut not the service time but I dont think is grievance is legit he never told the team as far as we know that he was injured knowledge of this injury only manifested itself after his demotion

Court of public opinion doesn't work. The Marlins violated a league law, they demoted a payer and placed him on the disabled list without his ever having played in a game at that level.

Anibal lied by omission about his injury. The Marlins demoted him to AAA because of a lack of performance. Anibal finally tells the team he is injured and then promptly gets mad when they place him on the AAA Disabled List.

Anibal is at fault for not being open with the team. Next case.

Right-hander Anibal Sanchez sent to Triple-A Albuquerque

By Craig Barnes

May 04, 2007

Marlin right-hander Anibal Sanchez, who threw a no-hitter in his 13th major league start last year, was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday because 'what we saw wasn't him,' according to manager Fredi Gonzalez.

Sanchez, 2-1 with a 4.80 ERA, has made it past the fifth inning only one time in six starts because of high pitch counts, and the Marlins felt that his confidence and aggressiveness needed to improve.

'He was getting too many hitters 0-2 and throwing too many pitches,' pitching coach Rick Kranitz said. 'Confidence plays into it. He isn't challenging the strike zone, and his tempo isn't upbeat like it was last year. The bottom line is he wasn't getting the job done.'

Sanchez, who was 10-3 with a 2.83 ERA last year, threw his no-hitter against Arizona on Sept. 6. It was the fourth no-hitter in team history.

'He didn't take it good,' Gonzalez said of Sanchez's reaction. 'It isn't the end of the world. It is expected that he would be upset, but it isn't where he wants to be. It is tough to make changes working in the bullpen and facing major league hitters.'

***[[[ Obviously he still didn't confess that day that he was in fact injured which he should have ]]]***

There is no timetable for Sanchez's return, and Gonzalez and Kranitz emphasized there is no physical or mechanical concerns. Right-hander Wes Obermueller will replace him in the rotation on Tuesday.

'We will go by our reports, and he'll be back when he is ready,' Gonzalez said. 'We didn't think he was aggressive enough, maybe nibbling too much and throwing to avoid contact at times.'

Sanchez has walked 19 batters in 30 innings, and his lowest pitch count was in Sunday's loss to the New York Mets when he threw 75 pitches in 3 1/3 innings. Otherwise, he hasn't had less than 90 pitches. Only in a 5-3 win over Milwaukee on April 9 did he last longer than five innings, going six.

'It about command of his fastball and getting it back on a downhill plane,' Kranitz said. 'He has become too predictable, and the other teams are waiting him out. They have made adjustments. Now, he has to make some.'

Sanchez set a rookie record with 23 scoreless innings in his 17 starts after being called up from Double-A Carolina.

'There wasn't a lot of adversity,' Kranitz said. 'It is hard to send him down. He is still going to be a great pitcher in this league. He just needs to take charge like he did last year.'

Or this, no mention of an injury from coach or player

...The Marlins say they were surprised when, four days after they demoted Sanchez to Class AAA Albuquerque in early May, he revealed his shoulder had been bothering him.

Sanchez, who won 10 games and pitched a no-hitter as a rookie last season, had allowed 62 base runners in 30 innings while showing a reluctance to go after hitters when he gets ahead in the count, likely as a result of the injury.

Why couldn't he have told them he was injured FIVE days before?

Jan. 30, 2007 - 1:01 p.m. ET

Anibal Sanchez, who was recently diagnosed with inflammation and tendinitis in his shoulder, threw soft toss on Monday.

"Right now I don't feel nothing," he said. "I'm going to be better soon."

Sanchez is scheduled for a second MRI on Feb. 5.

I really does seem he hid his injury from them up to and including when he was sent down. It wasn't until a few days into Albuquerque he says, (paraphrasing) "oh yeah, my shoulder hurts".

I said this before, I'll say it again, I don't think the Marlins misbehaved nor should they be blamed when a player conceals an injury. I believe the Marlins are playing hardball for just that reason, as a message to their other young arms "don't lie to us, for god's sake tell us if you're hurt."

Anibal should win the grievance, just another example of the organization being penny wise and pound foolish. Shame.

They did it for his own good. If he had pitched in AAA he would've gotten even more injured.

I agree with the organization here. This goes back to the foolish behavior and discipline. These players need to learn to speak up when they are hurt. Look what it's done to Sanchez and De Aza this year.

As for the behavior of the players it's very disappointing to hear. These are major league players and this in unacceptable. It's even more unacceptable that the people in charged allowed this to go on.

Anibal should win the grievance, just another example of the organization being penny wise and pound foolish. Shame.

Well said.. Agreed

If the Marlins sent Anibal down to AAA in honesty and without knowing he was injured, then they really need to check their medical staff for incompetency (well, we knew they already have to do that). A lot of people on here knew he was hurt just by watching him pitch, but none of them could figure it out?

Would Miggy, Alfredo, and Uggla's behavior in the dugout count as childish? Are they referring to those guys specifically? Those guys were always playing around with each other. I don't think it's a big deal.

I was thinking the same thing. All that matters to me is their performance on the field. I remember Alfredo saying something once about how Cabrera is playful off the field, but once he steps on it, he's very serious and focused.

What I think they are implying is off the field behavior (on the plane, partying, etc.). I think Alfredo has nothing to do with the behavior problems. I think these problems are more along the lines of Uggla, Olsen, Cabrera and others.

I can't imagine what certain players would be doing on the plane that would be childish enough to be deemed inappropriate.

Did I miss something? Uggla, behavioral problems off the field?

I can't read every piece from every source every day but obviously I missed this one. I had no idea.

I second that, everyone that I know that has met Uggla says he is one of the nicest people you can meet.

(Not that I know something about Uggla's extra curricular activities), but just because someone is nice when you meet them, doesn't mean they are saints

no, but it could be things like playing soccer on the field and not shagging flies or taking grounders (Miggy) - this was an issue in 2005, Jack's last year, and when the vets like Lowell were still on the team and grumbling about it. Remember when Miguel said something to the effects of "F*** the veterans, look at my numbers, look at theirs). Add in coming into the season out of shape, etc, etc. Not reporting injuries would also be part of it, IMO. I also think it's not a lot of these guys faults -- they have no experienced role models, and they are all making a lot of money compared to what they had been making. Combine that with losing and lack of expectations, change in manager from disciplinarian to player's manager, and it's a recipe for immaturity.

I can't imagine what certain players would be doing on the plane that would be childish enough to be deemed inappropriate.

Beer pong?

Only thing is they would have to BYOB because the Marlins do not allow liquor on flights and at hotels on the road.

I agree he didn't let the team know and b/c of that he shouldn't get &*$%!! Anyone who wants to blame the for this is an idiot! The guy didn't say anything and then only whines after he gets demoted. He deserves the pay cut.
