I don't see how a yes vote immediately means a stadium deal is done. Have we heard from Loria yet, saying, "I'm agreeable to all the terms, and I'll sign off on the deal if the vote is yes?" I don't think so, and this is the same Loria that nixed a deal years ago over 30 million. There would still be a contract that needed to be signed, and any number of reasons that Loria can potentially find to tweak the deal. As an example, what if he insists on a split of cost overruns, instead of the Marlins bearing 100% responsibility. Have we heard anything from MLB? So far, the only one we've heard from is Samson, which means the deal would be about as 100% definite as a condom with pinholes. I've been busy with work so maybe I missed something(if so, I'm sure someone will correct me).

Pretty much MLB, the Marlins, and the city/county met to discuss the deal...MLB is much more aware of the situation and I have a good feeling that after the Willis and Cabrera trade, they would assume command if Loria does anything stupid.

 

This to me seems to be the last major hurdle and if/when this passes, it'll just be the details that need to be worked out...

Loria didn't nix a deal a few years ago over $30 million. That deal fell apart because of the state and a potentially sub-standard lease that saw the city getting certain %s of revenues. Samson directly negotiating with Joe Arriola did not help much either. Especially when Arriola was undermining the entire process all along in hopes of getting Loria to sell to Cisneros. Come on, it was not that simple.

 

Times have changed. The Marlins will control 100% of revenues. Arriola is gone. And Major League Baseball is directly involved.

I understand. It's much more hopeful with Arriola gone and with Samson reportedly taking a seat in the corner instead of being the front man. Still, has this potential lease been 100% worked out as far as all the different revenue streams? And even if it has...still not a done deal until the papers are signed. Even then, unexpected things can happen, like the unexpected twist that happened at one point with the Twins deal. As others have said, I'll believe it 100% when the shovel hits the dirt, though I would be 99.9% confident after all the minor details have been worked out. And I didn't mean to make it sound "so simple", but this has dragged on for about 10 complex years now.

Promises to be an exciting day for sure. Too bad I have to work all through the morning, so I may not be able to use the web to follow the live feed (unless on the down lo, if you know what I mean :shifty ).

Even as growing citizen protest bubbled to talk of a potential legal challenge, Miami-Dade County commissioners stand poised to greenlight a massive public-works plan that could transform downtown Miami and bankroll a new home for the Florida Marlins.

 

The proposal -- which also sets aside money for a tunnel to the Port of Miami, a Miami Streetcar, a downtown Museum Park and the Performing Arts Center -- has moved with rapid speed since the fine points became public less than one week ago.

 

County commissioners will consider the package Tuesday morning in a special meeting. Their vote, scheduled five days after Miami commissioners adopted the intricate city-county pact 4-1, is crucial to moving the downtown revival forward.

 

On Monday, a notable critic surfaced -- car dealer Norman Braman, who eight years ago launched an ad campaign that helped doom a one cent sales tax hike that would have funded mass transit improvements.

 

''It's a double-cross of the voters,'' Braman said.

 

LAWSUIT THREAT

 

The auto magnate said he intends to finance a media campaign and is preparing a lawsuit to challenge a spending agreement that calls for the city to expand two Community Redevelopment Agency districts as a way to accumulate more than $2 billion in CRA money.

 

Directly or indirectly, that money would help fund a $525 million baseball stadium at the former Orange Bowl site in Little Havana, a $914 million port tunnel, affordable housing and other projects.

 

At least nine of the 13 county commissioners said last week they generally favor the multibillion-dollar, multipronged plan, though some question pieces of it.

 

The 13 commissioners will hear from Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez, who has embraced the plan -- another sign that the historic pact is heading to approval.

 

Braman argues that Miami and Miami-Dade commissioners gave the public no say and that the key financial vehicle -- using money from expanded CRA districts -- subverts the real intent of those community dollars.

 

The vision pitched by Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, Braman said, would benefit him as a downtown property owner. Yet he complains that the plan is being ''rammed through'' using money normally eyed for eradicating slum and blight.

 

''None of it is going to help the homeless,'' he said. ``All of it is going to help people who don't need the help.''

 

Despite Braman's misgivings -- and those being aired by some neighborhood activists -- the spending plan's chances of approval at County Hall Tuesday appear bright.

 

Supporters are launching their own public campaigns.

 

A group of businesses and developers led by Bayside Marketplace and Park West Parking created a five-minute video to try to sell the single biggest piece of the puzzle: the new port tunnel that could be finished by 2012.

Alvarez has refused to discuss the deal since it became public last week and refused to comment during a public appearance Monday afternoon. ''We'll talk tomorrow,'' he said.

 

His spokeswoman said he supported the entire package and will not ask for it to be delayed or split into smaller pieces. ''Otherwise he would not have placed it on the agenda,'' Suzy Trutie wrote in an e-mail.

While the county vote is vital, it would not be the final hurdle for some pieces of the project. Miami's proposed $200 million Streetcar, for one, still requires multiple approvals from state and regional agencies.

No fractures or anything, the only thing they can do for me is give me some drugs and send me on my way. The breathing problems are from bruising on the muscles outside of my lungs. X-Rays were negative.
