What was that about? I bought the Prius because I'm tired of taking $75.00 each friggin week and dumping it into my gas tank. I got 16 mpg in my Chevy Astro van. I'm getting 48 mpg in the Prius. The holier than thou brigade comment was not called for. And what if I did do it solely for environmental reasons? Who are you to trample my efforts? Don't you live on Earth too?? It's not like I'm standing on a corner grandstanding about it. I merely wanted to show my new car.

 

I can also drive in the HOV lanes by myself. I guess the reasoning for that is, the idea behind the HOV lane was to

1) conserve fuel and

2) cut down on the number of cars on the road. Since it really hasn't made a big dent in the number of cars (at least in South Florida where everyone needs a car to get around because our public transportation is a joke), the fuel efficiency factor is enough to warrant the special exception.

 

As for parking spaces, Miami Beach is doing the same thing, with more cities to follow. Again, the efficiency of the fuel consumption is probably what is motivating them. I'm driving a cleaner vehicle.

48 MPG is beasty

My Dad once had a 1993 Ford Festiva it got like 41-43 mpg.

That car was the shiznit.

I think Fritz's "holier than thou brigade" comment was in reference to the type of people who feel that these spaces are warranted and that hybrid drivers are entitled to them not for those people (like you) who simply own a hybrid for the improved fuel efficiency.

 

The most interesting hybrid moment I had was with ZipCar. They have cars all over some cities and members get to pay by the hour to use them. Anyways, I was looking for cars in my area and stumbled upon a Prius near my dorm. Shockingly, the hourly rate was more expensive than many similarly sized non-hybrid cars. You'd think that with the improved fuel efficiency ZipCar would want people using these (since gas costs are covered by ZipCar). Instead, they charge more because, in my mind, they know there's a good number of people who will pay the extra $2/hr to feel like they're doing their part. Nothing wrong with that. To each his own. But, I find it funny that a company would charge people more for a car that's saving them money and consumers seem to be OK with that (the Prius in the area is routinely checked out, while the cheaper Versa and Civic remain in the parking lot unused).

Remember that a Prius costs several thousand dollars more than a Corolla, too.

 

But Prius seems to be cropping up a lot lately. I've seen a ton of them on the road up here. I myself have a Corolla (35 MPG), and I'm holding out for the Corolla Hybrid.

I hope more people drive more fuel efficient cars. That way I get more of the good stuff for my wasteful cars. I cannot wait until I have a V8 or high-powered I6.

What really drove me (pardon the pun) to the Prius was the fuel efficiency. Like I said, I was getting 16 mpg in the van and filling up each week was killing my budget. I have 9 more working years left and needed something that would get me through while gas prices continue to soar.

 

I also liked the fact that since it runs off of battery and the engine, the engine isn't taxed as much and (hopefully) will last longer. We drive a LOT in my household and that doesn't include family trips to Orlando several times a year and up to the Northeast.

 

We average about 15k on my car each year and I'm looking forward to happy times in my new baby.

I wish my F-250 was more of a gas hog.
